"Bands/artists you cant into no matter how hard you try"

Bands or artist people love to death and whenever you try to get into it you don't see the big deal. This even includes folks you respect or at the very least understand why there is a lot of respect around them.

Prince
Yo La Tengo
Neutral Milk Hotel
Radiohead
Rilo Kiley
J. Cole (aight, kind of a lie, dope albums but no replay at all)
Bob Dylan
Van Morrison
Grateful Dead
Nas (all albums past the first two or three)

became legendary, and even everything that was trendy. We weren't huge Dipset fans like NY was, especially bc of their improper use of gang culture, but it's no way that we would dislike a KRS, BDK, Kool G, Rakim, Run DMC, Slick Rick, etc etc. I'm not sure how many heads knew the Philly rappers like Schoolly D, but yeah.

But Edutainment hit 32 on the wypipo charts which I think is kinda dope. I feel like he was peaking with those 2 albums.

I respect his place in the game and actually dig on a good amount of his and BDP's songs ... I think it's his voice that's always bothered me. So I guess he doesn't really fit "no matter how hard I try" cause I've come around a bit on a lot of his music. I just don't love him like a hip-hop head like myself should and typically does, I guess is what I mean.

I want to be more into his music because he produces, but I don’t get anything from it. I think I’ve seen both of his HBO docs, and some in-studio stuff on YouTube, and it just does not move me in any way.

I liked Tetsuo and Youth but I couldn't listen to it more than once

Basically all new rap other than a select few like Rapsody, Kendrick, Vince Staples I don't like. Been playing my shit from the 90's and early 2000's. After Sean Price passed away and other dudes got old there just is nothing for me.

I liked that new Evidence album mainly because it sounds the same as it did 15 years go

The Black Panther soundtrack so far is good

by music I mean his beat selection. They're not BAD tracks...just feels like something's missing.

He oughta let Earl Sweat do a whole album.

with Vince or Danny or both.

Vince has gone in a different direction with his last two albums but I'm still digging it. That stuff he did with No I.D. and earlier is hard to knock or top imo... and my only real complaint with Danny is that sometimes I feel yelled at too much by his frantic ass wasted self... mind you I wouldn't have it any other way.

a full album by Earl w either would be fire.

"Headphone Masterpiece" was like some off the wall demo album from some wanna-be Lenny Kravitz who thinks like Kool Keith, when I first heard some tunes I knew people from here were high when listening to him or got some "hey I like amateurish rock" vibe in them.

You right on not paying much attention to suggested artists on OKP these days, when trap artists started getting hyped around here I knew the old heads were gone and the new era of ThatSite-ers were posting now.

I'm a Kool Keith fan but I know 80% of what he puts out is garbage, I just like the diamonds in the ruff songs here & there.

Also who is the Asian sounding D'Angelo kat you were referring to?

what does "big Disco-y songs" mean?

i see how: Boogie Wonderland fits there, but do yo include "september" or "fantasy" or "serpentine fire" too (those are big, but i dunno if I'd call them disco-y)?

past that, you don't do their ballads either?

like "reasons" or "cant hide love"?

Keep your head to the sky).

I dig Fantasy and Got to get you into my life but the rest I am probably skipping almost every time.

A couple of things:

1. I've told folks before I've have a blind spot for certain late 70s stuff because my parents never got into it (though everyone else's parents I know where into it). I think it's because my parents were slightly older than my friends parents (My dad was into Jazz and his idol is Marvin Gaye and my mom only loves Motown stuff). Though I dig Isley Brothers, Rick James, Maze, Cameo & Roger, because my dad liked certain funk groups from that era, truth be told, I wsa kind of late appreciating acts like Chaka Kahn and Stevie Wonder because they weren't that big with my dad. And my dad seemed to hate Disco.

2. I can remember being young and liking September or Let's Groove but true to OKP form is I end up hating anything that becomes too popular. I get bored with a lot of Wedding Party songs. I rather hear the deeper cuts from Michael Jackson, Prince or Stevie. I can't listen to Beat It, Billie Jean, Signed, Sealed, Delivered or Purple Rain.

3. There are probably deeper cuts of EWF I would appreciate, but never took the time to check them out. Anyway, happy for OKP to school me on EWF.

Anyway, this is my dark shame, my cross to bear.

In response to Reply # 13

SLick Rick was more nuanced, and Rakim was more 5% butthe both pre-date Nas in reppin' street shxt.

I didn't know how grimy NYC was til I heard THAT shit. By the time he dropped Live and Let Die the 'hard-rock' era was coming on and EVERYBODY was basically on some 'it's hard out here' shit. And he was early with the Mafia references..before SHallah and Starks

There was no more Chubb Rock, Dana Danes or any of that $hit. No happy rap. It was the era of 'shit is mad real'.

Also Big Pun's flow owes a lot to Kool G. That rapid-fire multi-syllabic rhyme scheme shxt was HIS.

if you not into that type of rap, it's not for you.

Road to the Riches was the penultimate'I-don't-wanna-be-a-bad-guy-but-look-at-my-surroundings' song of it's time.

now everybody selling dope/on dope.

Listen to what he was doing with different rhyme patterns and schemes back in 1988. And it wasn't punchline rap. He was telling stories all throughout. He was just as if not more advanced than Kane & Rakim, he just never had the radio hit. I think the lisp kinda masks his gift. Similar to how Mase's lazy flow takes the focus off of how well crafted his rhymes were.

Like to see an artist drop an album that you think is the ultimate best thing going and then there next album is BETTER than what you thought was the best thing ever?1!? That's a hell of a run...but that was his run for a minute.

They're not my favorite band of all time, but they're incredibly good. I'd start you off with summerteeth (https://open.spotify.com/album/1JpaFJzzcsiulO6MdIcQdK?si=F2UMVeekQv677FCPhijPbg). It's the album that should have blown them up; not that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot isn't great, but that got famous just as much for the story as the songs, whereas the songs on summerteeth are universally great.

When they came to Austin City Limits Festival in '04? I heard some of their stuff because they were being talked about as the US version of Radiohead. I was a huge Radiohead so the comparison was all I needed to give the band some play.

The music was good, but it just didn't connect with me. Maybe I'll give the album you recommended some burn because they're a band that I wanted to like but just didn't for whatever reason.

There's an annual music festival here and this year the Roots & Spoon are headliners. Me & the woman always try to check out the acts that we don't know before the show.

We went into Spoon not knowing a thing about them and we started with the latest album, "Hot Thoughts." I gotta admit that I kinda like it. They're not bad at all.

Obviously they had a number of fans in town. I played their stuff a couple of times but I just couldn't get into them.

At the time, I wasn't into 'indie' music so it could have just been that my ears weren't open to their music. But usually 10 years after a movement happens, my ears start to open up and actually catch up.

I might give them another chance as I go along this year.

IS the fact that he's just not entertaining. Doesn't excite me (and obviously a ton of others, too).

Like you or someone else already said, he checks all the boxes for a good MC and a good artist, and more specifically he checks all my personal boxes in terms of what I look for in an MC. Someone with a positive vibe, someone uber talented who can also produce (that's kind of an added thing, I don't typically need that factor when ranking an MC), he writes really well, he flows really well, he's topical, he can battle ...... but none of it inspires me for some reason. I can't put my finger on it. But it's just a lack of that "OH SHIT" factor, in that I've never heard a verse or a song of his and been absolutely blown away. I'm always just like "oh that was good" then never have the desire to listen to it again.

The only exception to that thus far was his verse on Bas' "My N**** Just Made Bail". He absolutely MURDERED that song and for the only time ever I actually had that OH SHIT reaction, and still listen to that song to this day.

dude writes and produces his shit.

I’m a big fan and don’t really understand what folks want from him.

It’s cool but I think the knock on JCole is odd as hell.

I think this response is odd as hell. If you enjoy his music, that's awesome. I'm not knocking you.

But I find him boring. He writes and produces his own shit, which is impressive. But a lot of people do that, doesn't mean all of it is good. I find Cole's music, whether he writes/produces or someone else does, to be boring. He doesn't get any reaction out of me. It's meh. I listen, I say "that wasn't bad" and I forget about it.

It doesn't entertain me. It doesn't really blow my mind from a thought-provocation standpoint. It doesn't make me happy, sad, excited, angry ... it's just there.

He's boring. It's not that hard to understand.

If you're into it, great. Obviously a lot of people are. I'm just not. And a lot of people also aren't. Both are fine. Both are really, really easy to understand.

That's not even remotely close to what I mean, to be clear. All I'm trying to say when I say that is that his music doesn't do anything for me, doesn't move the needle. When I listen to his music I don't feel anything. To the point where I don't even feel "oh god this is awful" ... because it's not awful. It's fine. I just feel nothing. Uninspired.

That's all it is. But I'll def make sure to explain myself better going forward.

I see so many people saying he is boring online that I used to wonder if there was some type of bandwagon going on with him.

I even saw it used in an ESPN article one time which made me think some folks are being lazy when describing him.

but hell, maybe he is boring since his topics are self depreciating and he isn't bragadocious on the mic.

>but hell, maybe he is boring since his topics are self
>depreciating and he isn't bragadocious on the mic.

... and he's one of my favorite MCs ever. I think it's that his production doesn't really hit like the types of beats I typically enjoy. There's a lifelessness to them. Even though it seems like all the elements are there, for whatever reason it just doesn't click.

Re: self-deprecation, I also enjoy the hell out of that type of MCing. Blu's early work had a lot of self-deprecation. Eminem. Redman. All 3 of them have been and/or remain as top MCs to me so for me personally, it's not that either. Or at least it *can't* be. Haha.

Honestly I'm trying so hard to describe why I don't like his music because I can't fucking figure it out myself. It's all there, all the things I historically like about MCs. I just don't get anything out of his art, and I can't figure it out outside of just not being moved by it. And it kinda makes me sad specifically *because* of how talented he clearly is. But oh well.

Like, he's some of Pac, some of Jay, a little bit of Drake.

I think if I hadn't grown up on those acts, I would appreciate J. Cole more because he would sound fresher. It's not even that he's a poor imitation of those acts, because he's woven those styles into something distinct, to me. But I've just heard those lyrical themes and flows before and his stuff doesn't, 'Wow,' me.

I think if I were in my 20's, I would love J. Cole. But between the similarities to those other artists and his sometimes disrespectful perspectives on women, when he was younger, I just don't get hyped for his stuff like I do Kendrick or Oddisee.

His songs on their own just never grab me, and don't have much replay value.

I can actually point out what I DON'T like about him, even though it's way more things I do like about him.

I HATE when he sings choruses. It always sounds like it needs to be sung by someone else. It just feels dry, and he lacks personality to me in that way.

Yes, he produces his own music, and with that, his production is always like 7/10, 8/10 at best. I loved the fact that "Wet dreamz" was a Boom Bap song on radio in 2015, but after hearing it trillions of times over and over, it just got bland as hell to me. I only truly enjoyed it the first time I heard it.

Now, here's another test. I'm a club DJ, not radio, not online radio...so I can't play every artist in the club, regardless of how dope they are. Yet, basically EVERY rapper at his level, even if they aren't a club rapper, have a few songs that you can play in the club or at parties in general. Yes, even Kendrick, and especially in L.A....it's 5-6 songs of his that have worked great for me. Alright, King Kunta, Humble, Good Kid MAAD City for sure, Element, and even some lesser known songs. With J. Cole....NOTHING works at all, even without that being his intention, if that makes sense.

Like, even though Nas came up in the Boom Bap era where Boom Bap actually got club play...he has always had a few songs that work somewhere, even if it's a straight up Hip Hop head type of spot. "You owe me" was the only true club hit, and most of his fans hated that. But with Cole, like..........NOTHING would work beyond maybe a concert where it's a similar artist performing, and the crowd is filled with his fans. His songs just never have that much of an appeal, even when it's a Trap type beat.

I can keep going, but yeah. As Brew said, he checks ALLLLL the boxes, plus some, that should lead to him being an amazing rapper that I love to listen to...but nah. I tried to force myself, and just never loved it.

I remember my wife heard it on radio before I did, and when she had me listen to it I was like "damn ! This is J Cole ?!" and loved it.

Then I went to listen to it again later on iTunes and was bored by it by like the 3rd listen.

Which leads me to this point you made, too ...

YES. He's flat as HELL on hooks and could use someone else pretty much everytime out.

At least try to emcee.

Give me an effort or something that tells me you didn't rip mid 2010's instrumentals, transfer them into garage band, spend 1 hour studying Post Carter 3 Wayne, watch a couple Future videos, listen to March Madness, play Drake's greatest hits one time, and start rapping over those instrumentals 10 minutes later.

At least Russ tries somewhat. It's not an age thing because Kendrick, Cole, and Drake were young too.

Decade can make a huge difference.

That's how it feels...imagine that semi-slow kid being a rapper, and even though it's trash-trash, you would rather hear him than the lyrical miracle kid who had no personality, solely because the semi-slow kid was funny as hell and random. Like...."I like hot sauce on my chicken" is the worst and best line of that "Bartier Cardi" song.

As much as I wanted to like "Wet Dreamz" or any of other of his well constructed snoozefests, I heard it on the road and couldn't even get through the whole song before I started tweaking.

I didn't want to dogpile, but dude is special. No other artists has made so many people feel this way. He's probably one of the few rappers that I would allow my child to listen to sometimes. I just want to be able to stomach this shit. I'm not there yet. I think it's a generational thing too, I know some really bright teens that just RADIATE lethargy. It's so hip to look lethargic now.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*
