"All in the name of Hip-Hop....(stupid stuff we've done..)"

Me and my wife had just gotten together, and I took her sons to a Haunted House/Halloween festival. They had a fake electric chair set up, so I told them I was gonna go get in it. The dude working the chair told me when I got up there that it was all fake, but to act like I was being shocked..thats cool...I can do that.

Before he pulled the switch he said "you got any last words?"

Me: "Yeah, I got some last words.....FUCK ALL YALL!!!!"

..every parent, mother, child gasped in horror, but the boys were cheering like Holyfield had just wont the fight...smh.

Of course they dimed on me to their momma...and yeah, I got in trouble..

yall ever do anything like that....for Hip Hop??

Bottoms up....and the devil laughs..

I remember being irritated with them....so I walked up to them in the sandbox, and rapped the entire first verse of Ice Cube "Check yo self" to him and his two friends. I can tell they had never heard it before, and they looked confused, mad, and impressed all at the same time. I rememeber ending it..."so you better run a check!" and walking off like I owned the world.

Ten min later, the kid I dissed was crying, walking with the teacher, and pointing at me..."him!! He said he's gonna drop bombs on my mom!!!!"

... we were walking side by side in the hall on the way to one of our classes, and he had overheard someone in the hallway say to someone else "you know what I heard ?" and immediately responded "I HEARD PAYBACK'S A MOTHAFUCKIN N****" (yes, he's black) very, very, very loudly.

We laughed our asses off. Teachers nearby were not thrilled. Pretty sure he had to speak to our vice principal later. We still laugh about it to this day whenever I see him.

That shit hurt.

Mostly tho it was following the fashion in rap videos.

When my boy walked into high school with his pants on backwards. Real tears. He changed by 3rd period cause we were ruthless with the jokes.

I think either 8th or 9th grade and the class went on a trip to either Fermilab or Argonne laboratory......can't remember. We were seated in a theater about to watch a presentation and my boy, who was seated next to me, was jammin' with his Sony walkman.

One of the people who worked at the lab walked to the front of the theater, was about to introduce the presentation when my boy, real loud, goes, "IT AIN'T NUTHIN' LIKE BLACK PUSSY ON MY DICK, WORD TO THE MUTHAFUCKIN'....!" All you heard was a big gasp, and everyone turned to look at us and we just busted up laughin'. Can't remember if he got in trouble or not.

Man, good times........thanks to hip hop.

A high school track meet I had... We had a team mom. Mom of one of my teammate's girlfriend. She basically chaperoned and helped with transportation. Really cool white middle aged lady. Always talked about hip-hop and listened to what we played at practice. But we would never play the overboard profane shit out loud. Had a race to do and she picked up my walkman and pressed play. I had it cued to Bitch Better Have My Money. When I was done with the race she pulled me to the side and told me that she couldn't believe how a nice boy like myself listened to such 'raunchy' music. I must have LOL'ed for 8 hours after that.

had that year thanks to AMG. He ran it. You couldn't go anywhere in the community and not have it blastin' out of speakers.

D.J. Quik dropped first and killed it. Then AMG dropped and ruled the following summer as well as throughout the year. Then Hi-C came and couldn't really match the momentum of his predecessors but had some dope stuff as well.

HAD to have some Hi-Tec boots, like Jodeci had on the "Forever My Lady" album cover.

Every year, I take off work to go to the A3C festival here in Atlanta. I love it. I go to the panels and the concerts, all week long.

Me, him and one of my guys were going to get something to eat and decided on white castles (yeah, I know but at 1am, what else?). My cousin is driving and we pull up to the drive through.

Castle Worker Over Drive Through PA: "Welcome to White Castles, how can I help you?"
Cuz: "WHUT?!"
CW: Repeats greeting.
Cuz: "WHUT?!"
CW: Repeats greeting.
Cuz: "HUH?!"
CW: Repeats greeting. Asks can we hear him.
Cuz: "OKAAAAAAY?!"
CW: What can I get for you?
Cuz: Places all of our orders.
CW: So that's (repeats our orders)?
Cuz: "WHUT?!"
CW: Repeats orders.
Cuz: "WHUT?!"
CW: Repeats orders.
Cuz: "YEAAAAAH!!!"

We DIED laughing in the car. What made it even funnier is that the Castle worker was giggling like he 'kinda' got it but it was evident by the end of our order, he had no clue what was going on. This was right around the time Lil Jon was all over the place and Chappelle was already parodying him.

I'm from Harlem, and went to school in Manhattan. Sometimes I'd get a bit curious about the all the "hood" areas in the other boroughs.

I remember going to Queensbridge dolo the summer after "The Infamous" blew up. As I exited to the train, I noticed there were also several policemen exiting the train. They seemed to be headed out of the station, but I noticed they never actually left. I got a block or two down the street, then turned back. Something made me really uncomfortable about the cops not coming out of the station. I mean what I was doing was pretty dumb anyway, but THAT'S when it really clicked. I'm thinking either something was about to happen, or they were SHOOK.

But then I started meeting some Southern women, and EVERYTHING started falling into focus.

when (B/black) folx from out of town come into LA there are two different tours I take 'em on

the "fresh prince" version (beaches,Hollywood, the movie studios, all the PG stuff)

then "efil3zaggin" version is for the people who "wanna see crenshaw"

they get
- watts towers
- EVERY street named in a cube song (slauson, gage, van ness, etc)
- the slauson swap meet (which is always a letdown) and the rhodium
- the petersen car musueum (where biggie got shot)
- all up and through compton
- all around inglewood (particularly the non bougie parts as it gets gentrified)
- the hoody part of crenshaw (roughly century to rodeo)
- long beach (seeing the VIP sign is always a big moment 4 them)
- at some point we do roscoes <-- their choice (depending on how roguish i'm feeling we either do the obama one on manchester, the REAL one on main, or the hollywood one on gower)

the capper for both groups is "Black folx Sundays" at venice beach....especially in the summer

In addition to all of us just being stupid kids, we were in tune with this energy that compelled us to make these pilgrimages.

45. "Custom answering machine messages"
In response to Reply # 0

Since I had a sampler I could cut up and mix a custom answering machine message and have that recorded to your phone. A buddy of mine had me chop up Masta Ace's 'You Can't Find Me' as his message, which he kept until smartphones became a thing. My brother had me chop up a KRS One intro off some NYC mixtape (can't even remember which one at this point) where he says 'Yo this is KRS One, chilling with my man..he's not in right now, so why don't you leave your name, why don't you leave you number, and (my man) will call you back....'. I mixed that with a few different instrumentals depending on his mood that month (my favorite was probably the Perverted Monks In The House skit off Jeru's 1st album)

calling folx was an adventure

the first time hearing whatever the new version (and there were always many new versions) was fine

after that it was torture if they didn't have the "press * to skip the message" feature

I know/knew a cat that was still doing that mess in like 2013

singing ENTIRE gospel songs (he was doing it for girls)

i finally took to clowning him every time i left a message

first day at a very black centric private prep school named after a certain black history character

teacher said "ok, class, I am going to pass out paper and crayons and we are going to have a free drawing session, please feel free to draw whatever you want mkay?"

I said "Imma draw a car anitsgonnabe FRESH!"

after that it was like tv, the record skip/scratch sound, every one went dead silent and the teacher stared me down

"Young man! We DO NOT use that street language in here! What do you mean to say?"

There was a time when "fresh" was street slang which is weird to think about

I backpedalled so hard after being put on the spot. I learned that day.

I just wore Timbs everywhere especially to the gym and didn't see no reason to change into actual running shoes

But yeah the sound of the treadmill dying as I stomped my heavy ass to a ten minute mile was probably 100% terrifying, no doubt

90. "Boogie Boys 'Fly Girl'"
In response to Reply # 0

Just thought of another one. I was real young and gullible when this happened. The song 'Fly Girl' just came out and it was a hit on the radio so my parents went out and bought the 45.

On the b-side there is an instrumental where, in the middle, there's a d.j. solo. The scratching lasted for a few minutes. It was dope and sometimes preferred the b-side so I could work on my b-boy skills (....I was horrible).

One day my older brother tells me that the scratches on the b-side were done by him. I asked how and he told me that you can make rhythmic scratches by scratching the record yourself. I was amazed so never mind a d.j., the scratches you hear on record can be yours if you just do it. Lacking logic and common sense I would go to the basement, after many schooldays, and do d.j. scratches expecting a different outcome on record. Ummmm yeahhhhhh so I pretty much jacked up the record. It's amazing after all that I did, the record played fine. Got busted by mom one weekend and was banned for a few weeks.

Because of hip hop d.j.'s, kids jacked up their parents' records all over the world.

Frat brothers worried before the party. What's up with our boy? That return to the 36 chambers is what's up. In the hallway, about five brothers flanking me in case I was going to stop shit before it got started. But they didn't know the zone I was in: high and drunk and high off old dirty. All I kept saying was: "What. What. What." Nothing else. They kept looking at each other, like I knew he was crazy but shit. I was going to leave anyway cause I had some ass waiting and was nowhere faded as I really was, but college is for making legends sometimes. Rest in peace you crazy nigga.

I was in the Air Force going through basic training. Well for thanksgiving the base paired up every trainee with a family to go have thanksgiving dinner with. Well during the downtime i asked my fellow squadron member to hit the beatbox for me while i rapped LLs Around The Way Girl. I got to the 2nd verse and forgot the words, forever embarrassing me with my squadron. I did it to entertain the group and failed miserably. All in the name of hiphop.
