"Should I tell coworkers my salary?"

This week at work, an anonymous spreadsheet was being shared widely that includes the salaries of entertainment employees such as directors, writers, assistants, actors, and producers. The document lets employees see how much their peers earn, with potential bonus payout if applicable - sorted by gender, race, years of experience and title. Social media has made sharing the new normal with us millennials; should salaries be any different from your perspective?

Because there's ALWAYS, I mean ALWAYS one person who will FLIP OUT if you make 1 dollar more and it will be a problem.

This could lead to big problems.

There could be a company policy that forbids sharing salary information

Every employee that makes over 50K gets their salary published yearly, so everyone I work with knows how much I make. Its not a problem because I'm the boss, so nobody should be salty at it. Unless it some old white dude mad at this uppity negro making more.

Due to changing market conditions, it's best the current employees don't know.

Lisa - 10yrs tenure = $75K
Bob - 15yrs tenure = $80k
Richard - new hire = $90k

^^^You don't want Lisa and Bob trying to add $15k to the payroll overnight or quitting and you have to hire two more Richards. lol

A great company works to keep their employees competitive to market though so things like this don't happen. Most companies prefer to keep the expense down.

When employees compare salaries, they rarely really get into the details of why one person is making more than the other.

They usually stop at title and years of experience but there are many other factors.

I recently had to deal with 2 employees that were childhood friends. WE hired one and then he referred his friend so I hired him too. They had similar profiles (both new to the industry) but the first guy always did a little bit more so he started out slightly higher and was getting slightly bigger increases due to his better performance.

The 2nd guy was happy with his salary at first but then he started to act like he wasn't satisfied. He tried to argue for bigger increases but his performance didn't justify it. But he knew his boy was making more so he started to resent me as his manager and the company because he felt he was getting shortchanged.

They both eventually left for bigger companies. The first guy got a much better job and is probably going to be making significantly more very soon. Hopefully his buddy learns to appreciate his own path.
