Trump is using them to push his immigration stance because they are based in El Salvador and he has easy access to Black people whose children were victims of their brutality.
They also like to set up in suburbs so suburban white people have heard of them.
Most of the attacks and violence they perpetrate is against each other and those who rat on them. They are generally about their business (drug running, prostitution). They are generally not looking for attention.

The gang was founded in California by Salvadoran immigrants in the 1980's.... right around the time the US first started accepting a large number of Salvadoran refugees from their civil war.
I don't know if the causal link has every been truly proven but it's sure easy to assume a link and then use that to justify tighter immigration policy now.

I can't speak to any hysteria or resurgence. I just know they've been a consistent if not slowly growing presence in the DC area. They're easily overlooked because they mostly deal with their own but they do make enough headlines to be noticed. Not crack-era DC headlines, but enough to know they're still out there.
And my concern wouldn't even be for my own safety but for my future teenager since most of their victims seem to be in that age group.

Man, alot of *us* call all latinos "Mexicans". I think that was more a colloquialism than proof that MS-13 is being used as a catch-all for all violence among latinos and hispanics.

a lot of this is the result of the reagan and bush1 policies in el salvador and honduras. it isnt really a failure of our immigration system as much as it is another failure of our foreign policy that pushes some of the worst elements from chaotic violent failed states (which we helped to create) into other countries.

they've always taken it up a level compared to most gangs. when they got to LA they were mostly dudes who just wanted to get stoned and listen to heavy metal. When local gangs started picking on them they looked at these guys who would have an occasional shooting/stabbing, and then back to where they came from where there were literally bodies decomposing in the street, and thought why are we letting these guys punk us?

a well done pretty frustrating watch. doesn't downplay the brutality of MS, but shows the draconian approach of Trump's justice dept and local law enforcement.
since most of this new generation of ms13 aren't all tatted up, just about every kid of a certain age is a suspect. talk to the wrong person, wear the wrong hat, have anyone just accuse you of being a gang member, and they're suspended from school, detained, jailed, deported with very little evidence or due process.
the worst part, (and i wish the doc hammered this point even harder) is how the primary victims of ms are almost always other undocumented immigrants. the same people who are afraid to go to law enforcement either out of fear, or simply being treated like shit. Cheeto and his friends exploit the horrible things that happen to these people, only to use it against them. But its not the people actually getting killed who you hear screaming about MS13, it's Connie in payroll because she had to press 1 for english.
