"What do y'all think about Sway? From when he started to what he's doing ..." Wed Jan-31-18 12:44 AM by 81 DUN
It's depressing. I remember Sway from the Wake Up show, that was where I got my hip hop from. I had so many tapes recorded of that show. Being from the Bay Area we didn't get hip hop on the radio during the mid 90's We got local stuff E-40, Richie Rich (That's What I Ain't gone do) the south shit. I'd have to wait till 11:00pm to hear some Pharcyde, Common ect... Sway seemed like a cat that was about the culture. Fast Forward to now he has a bullshit show praising people like Walka Flocka. He's gotta be one of the ultimate sell out stories. I know we all gotta work but damn I'm a hater

wake up show listener / recorder (and We Came from Beyond on Sunday nights on KXLU)
Sway evolved but he did what he had to do. He never really super loved those ultra lyrical cats like Mr. Voodoo, Arrogant, that would come through and drop verses / freestyle, but would gas them up because that's what folks wanted to hear. He was into rap before the era that he was a facilitator for, I'm sure. He never even was plugged into the local LA scene like Blowed or Good Life, or even really gave them a lot of consistent shine, because that was out of his realm. Instead he plugged the likes of Defari and Dilated that were more marketable to a crowd that embraced the East Coast sound. So yeah, he evolved and grew his brand as an individual and remained relevant. Shit, can't knock the guy for evolving, he most certainly paid his dues.
You walk him to be in his moms basement with a Twitch show? Nah right.

It’s not like he has a record label
**************** TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

What's funny here is you don't cite a contradiction, but you're speaking as if you are. You got your Hip Hop from him in the 90s, so he was for the culture. Now you saw him giving Wacka Flocka props and that's not for the culture? How Sway? Like him or not, Flocka is part of the culture, and he's shown a tremendous amount of growth as a person. If anything, Sway deserves props for not hating on him just because he's from a different era. Sway is just cool like that and able to appreciate everyone. Do his interviews with Maria Sharapova and Ryan Reynolds also mean he isn't for the culture? lol. What makes him "for the culture" is that he's asks people the questions that The Culture want to know the answers to. God forbid a Black man know how to talk to and appreciate many different personalities. Meanwhile folks post the hell outta Vlad videos and other white news outlets.
Sway's the same dude. I give him credit. He stayed true to himself and made it. I don't catch his show as often anymore but when I do I'm always happy with what I see.
He still brings Common on the show, by the way.
He never sold out. He's the same dude and has always been likable and for the culture.

At some point we have to take on other responsibilities in life besides "keeping it real". He's 47, and probably not trying to hear all that "how many crates of vinyl do you have" shit at all. He has a relatively dignified platform, and he does what he can to still honor the legacy acts that came up when he came up. That's good enough for me.

Waka is not the mass marketed mainstream hip-hop artist you make him out to be. He's not a lyrical miracle spiritual hero but that's okay because he cares about emceeing. It took him a while to let the larger world know that but he cares nonetheless.
If this post lil yahtzee or lil yatchy then I'd agree with you all the way.
been listening to sway and tech since before the wake up show on 106.. when they were artists.. so very early 90's..
i'm proud of where he has taken it and what he's accomplished, and I like how as he has gotten more reach, he has made a commitment to rep where he comes from even more..
