"digging through my crates... came accross a Phat Kat EP"
Tue Jan-30-18 05:51 PM by PG

with a track with Dilla and Black Milk and another with Slum Village on it.. decided to rip the whole thing to mp3 and was listening to tracks I never really paid attention to and he goes off at the end of one song all talking about doing it okayplayer style etc...

lol.. I got all nostalgic for the days of yore... not everyday I put a record on and hear my in-a-net home and family shoutout like that.

man that Dilla beat on that one track is frickin killer too.

reminds me of back in the day when we’d beef over conscious rapper vs every other rapper.

Like. I was really pissed off at my child. as I walked to my apartment all I could think about my mother saying , “ keep living, you’ll see”.

i mean, given the current state of the culture

you do have lots of rappers who do have bars but at this point....are bars even a metric kids are checking for?

the VHS vs Betamax argument or the Blu Ray vs HDDVD argument.

but hey, wtf do I know? I'm on on month 5 of parenthood. I have no idea what sort of heartache it's going to be when my kid will someday say "I'm into that real hip hop, that old school hip hop like Migos, Drake, etc"
and I'm going to have to swallow it and say "Oh....cool" while thinking "don't even...."

like I said, I’m a hater. I’m also venting.

I was hoping to get at in the post I made about “what is culture”. {PG always come through for me tho, lol} When I think about it...it’s not suppose to change. Yet, I hear people saying that it does...I believe it evolves but I’m not sure I understand if the current state of hip hop is an evolution.

It that makes sense....

and her reaction was "yeah, I can see why you like them, and why you dont like the new stuff, but..."

I realized I was trying too hard and chilled on that "you gonna know this culture or else!!" thing.

2 months later she showed a video of some group that went backwards..

"Oh! Check this out! It's from a group called the Pharcyde"

We watched "Drop", then "Passin Me By"

"So there thing was creative videos? What else do they have?"

well...theres this song called "Runnin"

"Is that the song that makes you cry? Let me see that one"

...got her...

Part of the key was that we both like J Cole, so I can relate to at least one MC she likes.I dont look TOTALLY like the old man on the porch. She gets why I dont like Lil Yung and 'nem, and It aint just cause they dont sound like Mos Def. Alot of those dudes dont respect the architects, and thats where most of my problem lies. We jive on alot of rock, so I aint worried about that at all, lol

In response to Reply # 13

to me there was older music when i was growing up that i wanted nothing to do with but for some reason 70's rock (late 60's too) always interested me.

that was what my dad would listen to so i don't know how much is just that or if there is something about music that grabs a lot of people.

it could just be, well this is what i listened to so check it out, but i think the kind of creativity there was during both periods in each music and the impact they had on future music is similar.

i dont know if the 70's applies to most music and not just rock. were there a lot of timeless songs made in other genres in the 90's and i just have a rap bias? maybe for some people it was more funk/soul that their parents put them on than rock.

i just can't imagine the same thing with new wave and such from the 80's but who knows.

I actually didnt listen to hip hop for about 2 years in the 90s, and listened to nothing but rock (and old jazz).

90s R&B is debatable, but theres a ton of people who swear by that era.

Thats an interesting comparison, 90's hip hop to 70's rock. There was a ton of good R&B and Funk in the 70's too.

I get what you're saying, my real intro to rock was in 1990 and a cat handed me a tape of Physical Grafitti
