"The term Latinx is bullshit. Please stop using it"

nothing worse than entitled ivory tower academics and liberal hipster closeted racists trying to change a language structure that has worked just fine for thousands of years (newsflash: LGBT folk didn't just magically appear out of thin air) to fit their cultural imperialist agenda so they can feel better about their condescending holier than thou aren't I so progressive colonial mindset

"Latinx" didn't come from the common vernacular, from the people, from the culture, which is how all languages evolve. It comes from a ultra far left PC "we know what's good for you" *pats head* mindframe. It's not even Spanglish, which does come from the Americanized Latino/Latina culture. Meanwhile, NOWHERE IN LATIN AMERICA is anyone saying "Latinx" (question: how does one say "Latinx" in Spanish?)

Furthermore, Spanish is not the only gendered language in use today. Are PC hipsters and closeted racists prepared to add the "x" suffix to Arabic, Hebrew, Portuguese, French, and other gendered languages spoken by millions and millions?

It's wild disrespectful to impose a colonialist worldview on people who neither asked nor were consulted about it. "Latinx" is some feel good gloss over of the real issues Latinos, Latinas, and the community at large (by that I mean the human race) should be discussing and evolving on: sexism, machismo, homophobia, racism, and colorism.

I 100% emphatically reject cultural PC overseers attempting to impose their faux-enlightened language appropriation. FOH

I'm neither part of the Latin nor trans/genderfluid/etc community so I don't have strong feelings or insight on the subject.

I know a number of people who use Mx as their title, that doesn't really come up in general conversation with them.

Not sure how you would pronounce that out loud

I don't know the history of "Latinx", but people of Latin descent who don't identity as one specific gender DO exist. I don't know if this was a term/concept coined by that specific community.

As with most matters of language, time will tell.

It's not born from white elitism but the people who have been proponents of its usage have probably had more direct contact with white elitism in academia than the average person. Don't mistake what informs it for what creates it.

Nigga proud too.

I see it with people that self identify with it

Whether it's the lead singer of the Downtown Boys or the lead singer of Hurray for the Riff Raff

And it's their preferred nomenclature I'd be a loud idiot to try to tell them otherwise

Any time I talk about them as a whole I use Latino...

My wife teaches ballet outreach to mostly latino kids. So anytime I'm in the presence of her coworkers we always refer to them as latino's.

Can I ask "why?"
Like why don't you know or reference where they're from as opposed to being generic "latinos"?

I'm not that involved in their day to day lives. So when discussing a kid I may ask if they are black or latino depending on the circumstances to get a better understanding of the story since it usually involves parents complaining or not following through on something.

i am not saying that it naturally made sense to me but i guess by the time i was old enough to realize it was ingrained in me so much that it felt natural.

there are definitely some examples that you would think would be flipped.

Cars are masculine, caro/coche

Pick-up Trucks are feminine, troca/camioneta

trucks in the us are typically seen as a manly thing, pretty much same everywhere i imagine. yet it gets a feminine word. lol

I get moving on from what THEY were calling us. However, once we got to African American did we keep running past the goal line and out of the stadium?

folks are only gonna follow you for so long before they shrug and ignore your request.

It's like my boy back in college who couldn't settle on a rap name. Every few months he would change it. Shit got old.

and please, don't think I'm saying what the white man calls someone should be law. I just think the more letters you add to your description the more folks tune you out.

It's no different than one changing their hair or first name or where they're from.
It's not that we went too far it's that it's a natural part of human nature; to define yourself based on your lived experience is to be human.

That he's stuck in his ways
All of which is fine

But to declare self identification BS and a result of rampant PC culture is projective bullshit.

if the person that the term applies to deems it important then get with it

if someone outside the term is trying to force the term on others then wtf?

i'm latino but admittedly disconnected from super progressive trends. hispanic bothers me as do slurs. other than that *shrug*

but as i said, if it is important to you (general, not you specifically) then doesn't hurt me to respect it

the irony is the term comes from young "latinas" that are typically queer and trans, and organizers or artist, and not necessarily academics

i have never heard or seen a fucn white person or a "PC hipster," even be up on game enough to use Latinx...

which was an evolution from Latin@, with the "@" being a caracol that embraces male/female and the opening for the sex and genders in between.

Latin@ was used in FUCN Zapatista communiques and by public intellectuals like Gustavo Castro, Suri Prakash, Gustavo Esteva.

Latinx is part of that evolution, which I hope ends with the ultimate erasure of the term and Latinx folk begin to say I am Panamanian, Honduran, Mexican, Guatemalan, Salvadoran, etc. The term itself is not only gendered it creates erasures like a muthafucka

i can even see a case for a spanish language program to refer to the community as latinx in an effort to be inclusive.

i have no need to be referred to as latinx, latino is fine but i doubt i would be offended to be referred to as latinx.

im not sure that the latinx community is very cohesive, i dont think mexicans identify that much with other countries from central america or south america. yeah we speak the same language and immigrated here but not sure theres any unspoken bond between us. at least not as much as might seem logical.

definitely some common goals and interests.

“If people don’t identify on the gender binary, why not include them?” Moreno asked. “This is another term which moves the identity conversation forward. It promotes fairness and inclusivity, which I think is a good thing. It is not about taking away identity; it is about giving more identity to more people.”

Those resistant to using Latinx point out that Spanish, like other romance languages, is inherently gendered. “We are not arguing against gender-inclusive language…” wrote Gilbert Guerra and Gilbert Orbea in a much-shared 2015 column in The Phoenix, the independent campus newspaper of Swarthmore College. “We see, however, a misguided desire to forcibly change the language we and millions of people around the world speak, to the detriment of all.” Guerra and Orbea asserted that, if all of the Spanish language were de-gendered, the result could be words like “hermanx” (for siblings) and “ninx” (children).

Although it is difficult to pinpoint the origins of Latinx, several people told NBC News that they became aware of it in 2014, and that the word began among Latino LGBTQ communities. While there is anecdotal evidence that the term is used in Latin America, it is without question on the rise at U.S. colleges. Latinx is in usage everywhere from University of Nevada, Las Vegas to the University of Iowa to Princeton University.

---

Basically, people who dont identify as male or female and latino or latina would apply would prefer latinx.

if you do identify as male or female and prefer latino or latina then thats cool too

seems pretty simple from that point of view. why not?

followed by mexican-american before latin or latino chicano would be before latino for sure and i would feel weird using chicano. i feel like chicano has to be earned.

other people i have asked about latinx here have all asked me what is that

i think i am understanding the OPs point as this is a term that is not normally used within the communities themselves or pushed by them. i get why that doesn't seem right.

it may be the latinx (damn it) that will first identify as white before mexican, cuban, salvadorian, or whatever that might be pushing this in predominately white communities.

It's usually the activist / academic latinxs that are pushing the term in white-dominated cultural spaces. If you're latino at UC Berkeley taking Latin Politics it's more likely you will use this term than a latino who is serving in the military, a latino over the age of 35, or a latino who is from a red state, for example.

Like the op points out, it's not within the communities that the term has taken hold, but I also don't think it's white people pushing their own gender progressivism on latinos, necessarily

I'm cool w/people trying to move the movement and having a discussion about how language factors into that. I'm happy to hear arguments for Latinx vs. latino/latina.

If someone doesn't want to use Latinx in their day to day I don't see it as being hugely disrespectful in the way that you framed it, though. Never in my life have i heard someone say 'yo soy latinx'. They only use latinx when speaking english. so i don't know.

so in many ways these terms that in ways ID ethnic and racial groups are rooted in language...

so thanks to colonialism and the borders it created, everything from Mexico to the bottom tip of Chile and Argentina is identified as Latin America, therefore people who exist within those countries are Latinxs.

Yes, that includes places that can also be identified as Central America, the Caribbean, and South America (digression)...

Yet, within those countries not only do Black, White, Indigenous, "Mestizo" and (yes) Asian people exist, they can speak Spanish, French, Portuguese, local dialects, or "hybrid" languages. All these folks are grouped into and many (not all) do ID as Latino/a...

which is why the term is so problematic to begin with, but that's another conversation.

Anyway, Hispanics are people within those regions that speak Spanish only, no matter if they Black Panamanians or White ass Argentinians.

Yes Spaniards, people from Spain, are Hispanic, but not Latinos, while Haitians are Latinos, but not Hispanics

and let's not get into all the anti-black fuck shit of Latin America, cause we know without pause folk will call Dominicans Latinos (or as NYers call 'em Spanish, lolzers), but on the SAME GAH DAMN ISLAND, separated by that colonial border, Haitians supposedly aint? and lets not forget many Haitains are tri-lingual...

so yeah

It matters to me in as much as it affects social attitudes, norms, and policy. I don't think this very narrow distinction between Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking peoples from the same general region(s) really does that.

I'm open to have my mind changed, though.

As we learn new concepts often new terms come about to define those ideas

Some people are upset over the term "Cisgender" but that describes a specific set of people/characteristics (in this case it describes roughly 70% or more of the world wide population so it gets normalized as the dominant culture, but there does need to be a term to describe us)

It evolves based on many factors (migration, contact with others, environment, etc)

I'm sure you've heard that Eskimos have at least 10 different words for snow

To us, it's all snow

However, Latinx did not evolve from Spanish speakers
Because if it did, then we would also be referring to Blancx, Negrx, Asiaticx, etc
cultural appropriators always want to assuage their guilt by making everything about them and comfortable for them

Gendered language is not homophobic or discriminatory. It just is

she told me about the Athabaskan thing

I googled

Sounds like the Canadian groups like Inuit, but the Alaskan groups prefer Eskimo to Inuit, but still don't love Eskimo.

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2016/04/24/475129558/why-you-probably-shouldnt-say-eskimo

People in many parts of the Arctic consider Eskimo a derogatory term because it was widely used by racist, non-native colonizers. Many people also thought it meant eater of raw meat, which connoted barbarism and violence. Although the word's exact etymology is unclear, mid-century anthropologists suggested that the word came from the Latin word excommunicati, meaning the excommunicated ones, because the native people of the Canadian Arctic were not Christian.

But now there's a new theory. According to the Alaska Native Language Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, linguists believe the word Eskimo actually came from the French word esquimaux, meaning one who nets snowshoes. Netting snowshoes is the highly-precise way that Arctic peoples built winter footwear by tightly weaving, or netting, sinew from caribou or other animals across a wooden frame.

But the correction to the etymological record came too late to rehabilitate the word Eskimo. The word's racist history means most people in Canada and Greenland still prefer other terms. The most widespread is Inuit, which means simply, "people." The singular, which means "person," is Inuk.

Of course, as with so many words sullied by the crimes of colonialism, not everyone agrees on what to do with Eskimo. Many Native Alaskans still refer to themselves as Eskimos, in part because the word Inuit isn't part of the Yupik languages of Alaska and Siberia.

But unless you're native to the circumpolar region, the short answer is: You probably shouldn't use the word Eskimo.

so it makes sense that interior/coastal peoples have different traditions and lineages, and then even more sub groupings between that.

i think most people think of yupik or inuit people when they think of "eskimo"

that's the best i remember from when i've been to alaska.

i seem to remember watching kamau bell's show on cnn when he visited alaska. he was with some people who were making boats the traditional way to go out and hunt along the coast. his guide/interviewee was very explicit in saying he was indigenous but his ancestors didn't hunt whales or seals. it was a solidarity thing trying to preserve native culture/identity, even if it wasn't all shared.

This classification now captures the intersectionality and shared experiences of the negrX community outside of cis-gender, hetronormative, patriarchal biases.

On a serious note: they should use latinx in the circles is was developed for (student affairs, academia, activism).
But don't expect outsiders to bastardize the spanish language too.

This is different than negro/black/african american or Indian/native american. This is taking the rules of the language and throwing them out the window. Is that not offensive to the culture?

of people in my area who think latino and chicano are bullshit and hispanic is good enough (and these aren't white people). i had to learn to talk and listen differently when i first spent time in austin and on the east coast, and there was even more consciousness when i was in california.

i also don't think there's a good overarching term anyway. my class, for example, is 40-80% "latino" depending on who you ask (the self-identifying would be lower among "brown" kids and higher among "white" kids than you'd expect), and their family stories and identities are all over the place.

i'm not mad at this millenials and media people trying to move the language forward. i'm glad people want to talk about it.

we also need to remember that there are millions of these young people who identify as latinx but have a tenuous grip on the language, and i'm sure that plays into why they're more comfortable with the gendering changes. though that's a separate discussion.

struggle against white supremacy

I think you're very wrong

It was born of brown folks, and specifically of a mode of political organizing and self identification coming straight out of Latin America

the Latinx thing bothers her because it challenges the roots of language. in nahuatl, the language of the uno aztec age, when you use an X, it's actually pronounced as a CH. She uses it interchangably ex: Xicana vs Chicana because the Chi is a Latin derivative and using Xi is a way to reclaim our narrative from the Spanish conquistadores

Because of the Mexica movement etc. And trend towards adoption of the indigenous 'x' spelling for reworking political words like 'xicano'

I was like wouldn't it be pronounced 'lateensh' or something

But then I was like this is getting too crazy. But lo and behold that viewpoint will be held by somebody, and it's not invalid

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

by the marginalized, not by intellectual whiteness and privilege

half the old okp guard have podcasts now that explain this

maybe people within this post have already explained this, but I skimmed...

and those working for arts organizations see this practiced in daily professional life,
including gender neutral bathrooms at work

so you do not have to greet or reply to an email from James with "Hey man..."

or greet/reply to an email from Jen and Jan with "Hey ladies..."

and you can pronounce Jaime as Hi-May not Jay-Me and refer to them as they
