honestly anything from that era from Deathrow is rough with all the cursing. So much needless cursing. It really goes overboard. I actually prefer the radio edits on most of the songs.

Musically, it's one of the best Rap songs ever. Vocally, Nate's verse was transcendent. The build up and pass off to Kurupt is remarkable. Every verse is perfect, flow wise, catchiness wise, etc.

It's like the one song that L.A. people will never ever feel too mature to sing along to. I played it at Issa's birthday, and told the crowd, "shoutout to all my feminists who still sing this shit word for word!"

So...for all of you who feel it's too much now...you may enjoy these versions instead, along with the Mariah "Heartbreaker" remix:

Dove Shack - Ain't no fun pt. 2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWSPBU1VJAU

Tuxedo - Number one - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54S1v-r9GlI

music represents eras. not just eras in music, but eras in society, culture, etc.

i can still enjoy stuff like "it ain't no fun" while acknowledging that in today's climate that song wouldn't fly, and that in hindsight it is wild problematic in it's concept.

swearing though? FOH.

when, to be real, NOTHING out now is close to as wild, negative, harsh, etc etc as what the early 90's had. From Luke, to NWA/Death Row, even to the homophobia of unreleased Tribe and Brand Nubian...like, nothing out now is this bad at allllll.

The fact that folks are on Offset/Migos head for saying "I cannot vibe with Queers" when that's TAAAME even compared to what was out 15 years ago shows that folks are way more sensitive, and that rappers aren't saying things nearly as vile as they used to.

because...MOST gangsta rappers weren't actually doing that, but these idiots today are really swallowing whole pharmacies for their "art."

was there homophobia and questionable lyrics in the 90's? Sure... but words like fa**ot, retarded, midget were considered acceptable back.

IMO that's just progress as far as sensitivity is concerned.

But today we have R&B artist singing fuck, pu$$y, eating butt like groceries, etc...

Even when I turn on emo, white electronic songs I'm hearing these girls sing shit, fuck, etc...

In response to Reply # 90

singers are saying now is tame compared to what Hip Hop was saying in the 90's.

If you wanna isolate it and only talk about R&B, then yea, it's much more derogatory. Of course, some folks point out the Millie Jackson types, and even Prince, but most of their dirty tracks were never mainstream. So yeah, R&B is much worse.

But for Hip Hop? Yea, you're right that a LOT of progress has been made when it comes to sensitivity, even outside of Rap. And with that, Rap itself is nowhere near as bad as it was back then, when it comes to this.

I wont be blasting it in the car with my daughter, but buy myself I'm singing every damn word in the song because it takes me back to a time. It's a good song, and call it nostalgia if you want to. Just takes me back to an era when that song came out and I start remembering all the good little things in life that may have happened around there.

It's one of those "awwww shit" songs that come on. I know it wouldn't fly today, but back then it did and that's how I listen to it.

a little too much "emotional stirring" to me.

I can't deny it is brilliant, but....the music and the singing and the lyrics 'pour it on' too much.

It's like, "I rocked with this song too much for too long" and I don't know when I'll want to go on the "ride" with this song ever again.

Elton John "goodbye yellow brick road" - sort of like the O'jays song previously mentioned, this song just 'pours it on' way too much. I've heard it "enough" like the O'jays song as well.

Elton John "Daniel" - again too much, just too much

The Eagles "New kid in town" - similar to the others - too much "sentimental", heard it too much as well.

Fishbone "bonin' in the boneyard" - too cutesy, like a lot of the vibe of songs on the "truth and soul" album.

Fishbone "ghetto soundwave" - another "truth and soul" song that just wore out it's welcome due to having a somewhat "cute" tone to it. Just kind of "off" but it "is" good.

Gospel song. My aunt used to sing it in our church and man, I cried everytime. Whole church cried but it was one of those songs everyone requested when she would come home to visit from Hampton.

James Cleveland did the original and it’s just too powerful.

When that choir comes in.

makes me way too misty. Reminds me of a simpler time too.

3 Feet didnt age well (to me). It really sounds like a novelty act. Damn shame Beasties Boys did this type of thing better with "Pauls Boutique"

Ready To Die is STILL one the greatest hip hop albums ever, but I guess being an older cat now, my ears are too sensitive to "all that cussin".

ive seen this critique about 3 feet high before, might have been you. i dont agree with it but im honestly a de la and 3 feet high stan so i might just not want to see it.

i mostly keep wanting to get a higher quality version of this album. i missed out when de la made their old albums available for download. i actually downloaded the zips and when i got around to it to unzip them they were corrupted.

wouldnt mind buying it but want to make sure it supports them.

i think i can understand how it could be dated but i just love that album so much. one of my staples and definitely love playing many songs on it still.

In response to Reply # 50

in one word it is creativity

the samples used, the sound, the lyrics, the humor, the skits were all so original.

the quality of the beats were great, the lyrics were great. i appreciate the songs and album for the quality of them but i also appreciate the impact it had on the music. this is one of those albums that moved the music to another level.

i think they refined their sound with future albums and kept getting better but this album was great and probably my favorite.

so many songs have a specific sound that i love more than any other style. theres also so much variety in the type of songs in the album. i could see some people looking at it as a mess, maybe too much going on. the amount of skits also could be a negative.

probably in my top 10 albums ever personally.

In response to Reply # 59

Nothing sounded like it before it came out..and it ushered it in a new way to construct albums, songs, concepts. In that right, hell yes it's a classic...but I think the importance of it gives it a little more weight than it really deserves. Kinda like "Straight Outta Compton". One of the most important albums ever, but didnt particularly age that well.

Without 3 feet, we dont get Pauls Boutique, or any of the other sample heavy albums that we got. Save from a few songs though, it's a hard, hard listen for me.

theres been many cases where i didnt like the albums/songs that influenced some of the newer stuff that i loved. maybe by comparison the original sounded boring or unrefined.

in most of those cases there was a specific song that i listened to that made it click then all of a sudden i loved the originals.

prince is one that just doesnt click for me the way it seems to for everyone else. hearing some of his songs in different contexts im starting to appreciate it more but definitely not there. may never be.

Growing up in VA and being a kid it was hard to relate to. My cousin gave me KRS-1's criminally minded and I was like, "yeah um, that's cool".

Then she gave me 3 Ft High & Rising and my head exploded. Didn't know you could do with hip-hop all the things they were doing.

Remember there were no skits before these dudes. There wasn't really any music from cats who didn't come from the hood.

was mostly listening to radio and west coast until '00. aquemini and things fall apart made me realize there are more possibilities in hiphop.

i was on a santana kick at the time that i first heard aquemini...i was like whoa hiphop can do this????

when i heard 3 feet high i was like whoa this was done since when???? why is everything just bling?

i understand loving pure boom-bap hiphop and really enjoy it myself but i really love when boundaries get pushed and it works.

In response to Reply # 51

im sure theres still some, but no one really batted an eye until the early 2000s

even backpack rappers had tons of homophobia. the amount of cringe will vary and who knows as more time passes how they will settle. good to see culture as a whole moving towards more acceptability (alt-right withstanding).

for me i mostly will enjoy a song that has a line or two in there but sometimes that line will get me. part of music and rap is pushing what makes you comfortable.

i ride hard for de la and love oooh even with the "work hard like wetbacks" line. you can tell when lyrics are in there for humor or impact and not really from a bad place.

thats why i find it so odd that jews are so off limits. any line that mentions a stereotype or could be looked at as negative gets so much blowback. not sure what makes them untouchable.

im sure 10 years from now more songs will be on this list for me. i wonder if there will be some songs that i just cant listen to in 10 years.

I was mad hype for him when I heard Rev. 2. Not sure why, but it's hard to listen to most his stuff now. Some of it is the over top lyrics but as soon as a track of his comes on I tend to skip it.

There's just certain shit you can't watch as a grown man
that movie is very time and period specific
I was about the same age and doing the same shit (no raping) more or less when it came out so it was dope to me at the time
but nowadays? Pass

In response to Reply # 64

That movie came out during my late teens so when it came out it seemed edgy and cool. But after watching it again in my late 20's it was over the top and inauthentic.

The movie Happiness gives me the same feeling as Kids too. A piece of art that was so edgy but looking back was completely false and problematic.
