The quality is still better than a cell phone but it’s so much easier to whip out a phone and snap pics these days.

I have an older IPhone so the quality isn’t that hot but my sisters android? Damn, stunning quality.

But I dug out my T3i this morning because my twins were looking especially cool in their school clothes.

Phone can't beat that DSLR.

I'll admit that I dropped using the DSLR partially because I just never found the controls intuitive. Frustrating searching for the settings I wanted. I figured touchscreen might make that alot easier. Shrugs.

I still shoot w/my t2i from time to time. I wouldn't put a $5000 lens on it or anything, but for a couple of bucks ($200-$400) you can get a number of fun lenses new or used, that might make a much bigger difference in your photography than upgrading your camera for a couple more megapixels.

Nothing, lol.

The Camera's nice but the only impact it's made is the more autofocus points (but I ain't a sports photographer so for me it's as much a negative as a positive) and less of that arbitrary buffer restriction Canon places on their cheaper models ie.. after a quick succession of shots the T3I decides to go smoke a cigarette while the buffer loads.

Outside of that? EXACTLY THE SAME THING.

I had a fashion shoot on saturday morning and I brought out the 80D just to get used to changing settings on the fly but when I really wanted to shoot later in the afternoon it was the T3i I brought.

But like GOMEZ said above I brought myself a bigger boy lens around that same time and used it on the fashion shoot and nigga, I felt like Helmut Newton.

Not gonna say that there aren't better things under the hood and that I am unhappy with the purchase but I would wait a biiit longer and see how Canon refreshes the line towards the end of the year. Their cheap new full frame was pushing not much over 1k during the holidays and in hindsight I mighta waited for that...if you're gonna upgrade upgrade to one of the prosumer joints

You gonna process it yourself? Get it processed? Scan negatives or slides yourself to get digital files? Skip digital all together? I’m curious because I’ve wanted play around with film cameras a bit but there’s def a few more layers to consider.

Eventually I want to try processing B&W myself. I did it in highschool...but that was well over 25 years ago...

Get it processed? Scan
>negatives or slides yourself to get digital files?

Ultimately I want them in digital format and i'll use lightroom for final processing.

Skip

I been researching methods on the best work flow for getting negatives into digital format to work it. Looks like a wealth of info out there.

pretty much been my workflow. Dev at home is pretty easy and gives you that extra level of control. Keep your chemicals air and light tight and they'll last way longer than you'd think they would. Color kits start to add up after a while but they last for months.

In response to Reply # 23

The place I use to process charges $7/roll to digitize.
I just dropped off 9 rolls of old film I found in my basement, had them developed only...so i'm looking for a scanner so that I can digitize them once I get the negatives back.

works fine. the files print well. i scan at 3200dpi.

you can get a Pulstek which is designed for 35mm film and will give you cleaner scans and better color, but its not really worth the investment unless you're mainly shooting film and you NEED giant super high quality print files. If you're just printing books or regular prints, a flatbed is fine if you have LR. I've printed 20x30 cleanly from my Bronica.

i can only imagine the newer scanner models are better.

any money.
I feel like a chump for even paying the shop to digitize my last roll of B&W...I rescanned the negatives myself and they look WAAAY better than the hack job that the camera shop did.

Still haven't gotten my materials together to start processing my own B&W....hopefully by summer.

In response to Reply # 0

I mostly shot with an old T2i, which let me learn a lot about the basics of photography.

X100f let me get out and shoot lighter, and pay more attention to what's going on in a shot, rather than constantly fucking w/lenses and settings and stuff. I probably could have gotten the same amount of fun out of a Ricoh GR or something for a little less money, but the Fuji is fun as hell. Just shooting .jpgs w/minimal edits, and not giving a fuck.

A couple fun ones that made their way to Insta:

In response to Reply # 10

Sounds like everything about the Fuji X series is RIGHT up my alley. I feel like i've hit a wall with my Nikon D5100. Just not getting the results I want, missing shots of the kids, landscape shots just being uninspirational... Not sold on full frame being the answer; not sold on upgrading to the D7200 being the answer...just kinda wanting something with more "control". It looks like Fuji is doing exactly that!
I've zero'd in on the X-T20 or the X100T or X100F. I like the idea of having the option to expand my lenses....and the X-T20 seems like a good path to walk.... if I were keeping a DSLR in my collection, then i'd probably be more on board with the X100 series....

I posted about it in one of the old photography posts. The best feature is how easy it is to adjust your settings on the fly. I also love the size. I used to use a T5i and the size of the camera resulted in not taking it with me a lot of times. The x100f fits easily in a coat pocket and I use it way more.

I take it with me way more often than I would drag out the clunky DSLR. It’s also way less imposing in public settings so I’m less apprehensive about breaking it out.

in a dream situation, i'd live to have a mamiya 6 or 7, but one of the older fujis is probably more realistic, something like a gw680 or 690.

i cant wait to see what you do with the pentax. make sure you get your hands on a 105mm 2.4. in the running for greatest lens ever.

She's super-professional, willing to talk through ideas, she's personable, and she has just about the best pose instincts I've seen in my albeit limited hobbyist life.

She's stepping away from the game, at least for now, from what I've heard.

In response to Reply # 0

so, a friend of mine took up photography as a hobby 2 or 3 years ago.

had no professional training, just bought a camera and really fell in love with it and was inspired. started learning his history, learning cameras, learning film, etc.

started doing some modeling shoots and got published in some small, very specific to photography magazines.

kept grinding and working his connections, and on Tuesday he started working for one of the biggest ad firms in NYC. so, in a few years he took his hobby and is now, technically, a professional photographer making more money than he's ever made in his life and getting to do things most people would pay to do.

the firm just flew him down to Florida today to shoot the 24 Hours of Daytona (one of their clients is Cadillac and i assume one or more Caddys are in the race).

point is, don't stop chasing your dreams. you never know...you just might achieve them.

when you work with images or whatnot a lot, you just automatically see it at its greatest potential. so like, the image may be on instagram, but you know it would look dope big on a wall, so you just see that instead.

most people just see it how its presented. which is the expectation.

idk if that make sense.

couldnt have imagined it 6 years ago.

This gonna take some getting used to from a DSLR.
1st impressions are that it's getting WAAAAAAAy better shots of the kids off jump. The jpegs i'm getting need ZERO retouching in Lightroom.
Normally I have to trash shots that used flash...not here...even shooting in full Auto mode i'm getting great shots....flash and everything..

Ergonomics are trash...but the photo quality is making up for that hands down...

In response to Reply # 63

Aperture in auto = shutter priority

Both in auto = full auto

Simple

I shoot mainly in aperture priority but its more or less locked at f/8 since i mostly shoot studio and street

Fuji cameras are pretty much about the fundamentals. You can just rely on the exposure triangle since changing all three is so quick.

What can I use for my RAW files? Or do you even bother with RAW?
My Lightroom 5 doesn't seem to be able to read them....

I actually like the way the jpegs are coming out, and I never was big on RAW with my Nikon... just curious

Mirrorless just isn't for me I guess.
I like some heft to my camera.
I like that tactile feedback of the mirror flipping back into place upon shutter release...I need more than just an audible indication...however so faint...
I already had good glass, ditching all of that to get on the Fuji train was just hustling backwards...
Battery life wasn't optimal at all. I can leave my Nikon DSLR on the shelf for weeks and go to pick it up and STILL have well over 75% battery available. I can travel with a single battery and not worry about it dying.

There's a $500 canon photo printer on b&h that after rebates comes out to $150 also has 2 separate 50 packs of glossy photo paper.
