when I accelerate. Think like a kid blowing bubbles in their drink.

not every time, maybe 50% of the time - more when the car is cold

doesn't seem to affect performance in any way, it's nothing i can feel while driving, just a sound

ideas?

Sounds like air in the cooling system. Depending on the car, they may have had to break loose a hose or something and didn't bleed the air out the system.

I'm surprised they haven't already hit her up for the "carbon blasting". That's one of their go-to's. My guy has a Tiguan. It needed a new turbo. The turbo was under warranty, he was happy as shit. I said get ready for them to call you and recommend a carbon blasting. He text me back later that day like, "had to pay $250 for carbon blasting". I was like "I know", lol.

where they go in and use a chemical treatment to remove carbon that has deposited on internal engine components. VW, Mini, BMW are the ones I see do it most.

Snatch the wheel is one thing. Take time to put the bolts back in the hub (especially if they left the jack)? Nah. They definitely did you dirty, that for sure

Could be worse. One of my wife's friends came out to her Dodge Neon on 4 cinder blocks. Stealing wheels is wrong, full stop, but who wants to steel wheels of a Neon?

second off: Golf = GOAT

thirdly, read the owner's manual. most naturally aspirated joints can get away with 87 octane but I'd go with whatever the manual says, because you can get some knocking if you go low-grade and the engine was built for mid-grade or higher

12. "as far as octane goes..."
In response to Reply # 3

I always tell folk to use what the manual says. You're not getting anything more special by buying higher octane. In your case, as cars get older, they can develop carbon on the pistons which can cause "hot spots" and cause the fuel to ignite sooner than the engine is ready for. That would cause knocking or "pinging". A higher octane (which just means it's less susceptible to igniting) would serve to alleviate that, but it would just be masking the underlying issue. I'd take it to a shop and makes sure there's nothing else going on.

What kind of car? I had the chain go twice on my old ride ('01 Saturn L200). Since it was an interference engine, when the chain went it grenaded the engine. When the second one went, the car was over 225k miles, so it wasn't worth putting a new Ecotec in it.

Still remember it's last days. There was usually a slight rattle when it started, but nothing after that once running. The last time I drove it it had the slight metallic rattle then moved on. A few minutes later the car just felt like kit had no power, as if it was running on 3 cylinders. It got me where I was going, albeit slowly, and refused to start when I went back later that evening. Had to tow it home the next day, and just donated it 2 weeks later.

no longer in need for 3 rows

would be nice to save on car note and possibly improve MPG

currently have a 2013 traverse which should have decent value in this market (need to double check how the value compares to what i owe)

what are some undervalued cars i should be checking for? i love knowing i got something at a good price that should sell for more lol

wouldn't mind a sedan and a coupe is always tempting. not trying to be too flashy but trying to find a good balance. i usually go for the practical and this may be the first time i could go for something "cool." under $10k that could be negotiated to around $8.5k. i do want to avoid something that will require high maintenance.

did have something major with the engine but the warranty covered it. i think i had another problem the last year that had to be out of pocket.

i really like the technology/entertainment features that kia includes and i was pushing for the minivan before we opted for the traverse lol

i would need to do a lot of research and check them out in person to consider them again.

'15 Hyundai Azera - nothing else is wrong with it, but that damn smell..ugh. Never happens in fall/winter/spring, only summer. No one can find what's wrong...even the dealership, but they offer to change the filters for free, I swear I don't want another car note, but I might have to let her go.

When the fan turns on, it pushes out the smell for like 1-2 minutes. I thought it was the AC, but I've run the AC in other seasons and I don't smell it

hot temperatures plus condensation in your a/c evaporator are a perfect breeding ground for it. They make products to kill and help stunt the further growth of the bacteria. I would imagine the shop has tried that. Some shops even offer it as a service.

I have 32k on a two year old car. Never had this problem with any other car, not even the Sonata. Itโ€™s such a temporary fix. I shouldnโ€™t be in the shop three times over the summer to get rid of the smell. I do believe they have done what you mentioned, but it doesnโ€™t last.

they're gorgeous cars. You may have just gotten a bad one out of the batch. I'm sure they've made sure the evaporator is draining properly, etc, etc. Outside of replacing the evaporator and thoroughly cleaning the entire hvac box out while everything is apart, I can't think of anything else they could do.

But my car is spoiled as it's parked in the garage most of the time. I really think it's a defect with the car. I did my googles and saw other Azera owners (and some Sonata owners) have the same issue.

And they recently announced they are discontinuing the model, so it'll be interesting to see how they handle maintenance and repairs.

The gas costs are flattening out, (I had a bmw that ate up 200 a month on premium)

so far I spent 75 dollars in the last month

I got an easy care warranty that should take care of everything for this car,

I had really good credit so I only paid 13K for all of this

I feel like I finally resisted the dealership temptation bought a "reliable" car for the first time

thanks for the advice.

2006 Honda Civic (AT).

I tried to do some PM at 100k, but it wouldn't start this past month (now at 145k) and had to spend more than I wanted. new starter, power steering hose (leak), new brakes (knew about that), new axle. probably been 80k since the last transmission fluid change as well.

no sense trading it in; I'll keep it and use it as a back-up or loaner for somebody. definitely going to buy a car by the end of this year though.

I should've traded it in four years ago when I could've got better value for it, and before I paid for more repairs, but this was my first brand-new car and had an idealistic view that I'd drive it to 200k no matter what

BFG G-Force Comp/2 A/S. Only negatives I have so far are they will cost more to rotate (being directional) and there is a bit of road noise when cruising on the highway. Not horrible, but enough to notice compared to the Goodyear Eagle RS I had. But they ride well and stopping distances have shortened enough to be noticeable compared to stock. Once it gets warm I hope to get a better sense of how these work out

you gonna have them actually mount and dismount to switch the tires to the other side? Usually folks just go front to back and call it a day.

anytime the temp is below about 40 degrees and i run the heat, the whole car fogs up after about five minutes. when i get in everythings clear but running the heat for a few minutes fogs every single window. so i have to drive the car in the cold with the windows cracked so it doesn't fog. decent about of times i get in the car on a cool morning after a warm day the day before, there's condensation on the inside of the windows. i took an hour or two a couple weeks ago and cleaned the inside of all the windows, and that seems to have fixed the condensation issue for the most part, though this morning after breaking the ice up that was encasing my windshield wipers i noticed there was condensation on the inside of the windshield where the ice was. i figured this was just cause the ice had been right there. But i've never had a car before where i've had this big a problem with the inside fogging in cold weather, not even on the cars i had pre A/C. any idea what the problem could be?

Had to replace my heater core in the Saturn years ago. Fortunately, it was wedged closer to the back of the center console and shift lever, so I didn't have to take the dash apart. Still wasn't fun. than a heater core. It's such a depressing fucking job to do. You got damn near the whole interior pulled out of the car, a million screws, trim pieces, trying to make sure you don't get the inside of the customer's car dirty, the bay is tied up until you're done...ugh. In a lot of cases, like mini-vans (looking at you Caravan, Town and Country)it's a two-man job to actually pull the big ass dash out of the van and sit it aside. All types of fuckin wires and connectors to pop out. FUCK HEATER CORES.

but you're conflating recalls with service campaigns. Recalls only address safety related issues and they are on the factories dime. Campaigns are just the factory telling the dealerships "here is some shit you might see customers complaining about...and here's how you handle it". Manufacturers are slow to even do recalls until they know they have to, or somebody could get hurt or killed in one of their cars.

to adhere to their backing board dries out. Like Oakley said, it's worse if the glue somehow gets exposed to moisture. Most times, though, it just dries out. I'm sure you could go to a detail shop and have it redone. Might cost some jack, though. You can try gluing it, yourself. Also we used to use staples. We weren't tying to make it look like brand new, though. If a customer asked us to just fix it so it's not in their way. We would use a staple gun...then spray it with spray adhesive and once it was dry, remove the staples.

P0305 codes every 6 months or so - a coil pack fails

Shits clockwork at this point, should I just ride it out till I get another failure or is there something else I can do to stop this?

I wanted to wait another year or so before I look at another car since this one is paid off.

Grab a couple and stash them aside. Once the code pops up, replace it.

That said you're not fixing the underlying cause of the problem. But it would get you through the year

Where are you getting your replacements from? Don't skimp on ignition coils for VW vehicles, one of the few instances where OEM vs. aftermarket actually matters.

just had the bad batch of ignition coils...which may have alleviated the concern that there were other underlying issues.

My 08' Passat is still on the original coil packs amazingly, but i'm expecting them to start going sometime this year....

My 08' Touareg was also on the original coil packs, they started going last year. I went ahead and copped a full set (I have the V8 so that hit my pockets HORD!!) and threw them in the back to be ready....and I haven't had any misfires since they arrived..

cuz, that's a very specific code. That indicates a misfire on cylinder 5. Are you saying that you repeatedly have to replace the #5 ignition coil, or various coils go out, regularly.

there's cheaper ones. I like it because it reads abs system codes and you can check readiness monitor status. You may not care about that. It's my little go to. Even when I worked in a shop. We all usually had a smaller joint like this of our own. If you gotta run out to a customer's car or something...you don't always want to lug around the big ass shop scanner.

I bought it some years ago when my Saturn was throwing a random code before I had to go through emissions. It works well with mt Torque Pro app I have on my phone. It helped diagnose a bad heater control valve on my Fusion a few months ago, which saved me a trip to the dealer for a $36 part I changed in an hour (mainly because of cleanup, not difficulty or access issues). Not quite as robust as a standalone scanner, but it's hard to beat for the price.

At some point I do need to get another one so I can run FORSCAN and futz around with a few things

Her Focus is just about paid for and her new job will be 15 minutes from the house (I'd say under 20 miles round trip). But the deposit up front and starting from zip at lease end isn't exactly what she wants.

At this point we either do the extended warranty with some company or trade for an Escape

like, the plus is: new car w/ all the new tech for a little less up front/ per month, no real car problems ever because it's new

you do want to know what your mileage is going to be (my wife and I both lease, she drives her car every day but work is only a couple miles away so, she's like two years in and juuuuust crossed 10k miles. we usually take the long drives in my cars because I'm driving, and I end up with more miles even though I work from home)

but, there's insurance on the new joint, I've never had a problem at lease turn in time (even with my escape where I had scratched up the ford logo with a bike rack and some curbing on the rims of my fusion)

and like, you have to go through the whole thing again a couple/few years later but you know exactly when it's coming.

it's just expensive and you don't have a car at the end to show for it.

I love the aggressive look on it. it rode well even in sport mode.

I also drove a 2014 gs350. it was pretty damn good too! it looks more boring tho. while its got lots of power and was a bit smoother than the q70, I didn't like the interior as much.

it felt more like a cockpit. everything is pretty much wrapped around the driver's seat. the infiniti felt more spacious in the front seat.

158. "Anybody ever had their wheels painted or powder coated?"
In response to Reply # 0

I like the stock 5 star wheels on the Fusion, but 2 of them have some curb rash, one looks like something either dripped and hardened on it (or the clearcoat was sprayed too heavily) and when the tires were changed it looks like they dinged the wheel with the air gun getting the lug nuts off. So, unless I feel like buying new wheels (and I don't) I'm looking at having the wheels repaired, sand blasted and resprayed. Did a bit of reading on paint vs. powder as far as durability and haven't landed on either side of the argument yet, but leaning toward paint. Need to get a price quite as well.

Dip isn't the way I want to go. While quicker and easier, since I need to get the wheels repaired I may as well have a more permanent solution than Plastidip

159. "Any experiences with hybrids? Ford Fusion/mid-sized hybrids especially?"
In response to Reply # 0

So, I'm one of those ride til the wheels fall off kinda dude. My 04 Saturn has 248000 miles, and it looks like I'll be getting a new car before the end of the year. I always get gas savers, but with the way I drive now, I can't fuck with the small 2L or less engines anymore (my Saturn is 2.2L). I need power. But I want to still 25+ gas mileage. So, I been looking at Ford Fusion hybrids. I think their still 4-cyl engines but with 2.5L (I think). I've rented a few of them, and those bad boys can fly.

But of course I'm scared of repair prices for the lithium battery. However, in various forums, most people seem to never have to replace them (I've seen $4500+ price tags on replacing them). I'm also concerned if maintenance for a hybrid engine will be a little higher. I already imagine that cars newer than 2010 have higher maintenance costs anyway with all the newer technology in them. Will I have to take a Fusion hybrid to the dealer for repairs (after warranty expires of course). 2012-2014s used Fusions are right at the top of my price range.

Any suggestions, advice, or help?

166. "Can speak on the Fusion specifically, hybrids tangentially"
In response to Reply # 159

As a car, the 2G Fusion is quite nice. Love how it looks, love how it drives. Rear seat isn't as big as, say, a Camry or Accord of the same year (slightly more snug), but haven't had many complaints. Trunk is huge, but accessing the rear of it you almost have to climb inside..

In that year range you're looking at either a 2.5, 1.6 ('13 MY), 1.5 ('14 MY+) and 2.0. The 2.5 is the boat anchor of the group, and the only (non hybrid) one still naturally aspirated. Everything else is turbocharged. I have no complaints about the 1.6 in mine, and never feel lacking for power. That said, the turbo can catch you out there if you let off the throttle and it comes off boost. My father has the 2.0 and that thing moves like his old SHO.

The 'eco' in EcoBoost isn't spectacular. In congested city driving there's little chance I'm getting 24+mpg (and with the smallish tank that can be annoying). That's probably the reason I see a TON of hybrids (standard and plug in) in the DMV area, especially in the city. You will see gains in economy for sure, but your power delivery and overall speed will be much different (but that's most hybrids across the board, methinks). You will lose a ton of trunk space, as the battery pack eats up quite a bit of room in the back. So if you haul a bunch of stuff, you may want to have a look at that (they do have the batteries set up so it looks like there's a parcel shelf above them, so you can make some use of the space available, but it's definitely lost space compared to the stock one). At least they do give you some nice wheels to go with the 17" tires that the hybrids usually run on.
