it's not a matter of H&M being clueless. what if somebody made the deliberate decision to drop some racist shit they knew would cause a media shit storm and bring them attention and clicks and views.

they get all that attention, even though it's negative, and they just apologize later and promise to do sensitivity training or something.

maybe?

prolly not, but maybe.

them alt + right dogwhistles are working

That shxt had to have been approved by too many people to be an accident.

I recall recently there was a hubbub about all the 'mixed race' kids in print ads. Something about a Cheerios ad/commercial
.

Outta nowhere here comes an ad with the darkest child available in a monkey hoodie.

that suggests that its a massive conspiracy that alot of people at H&M were in on.

Why would H&M get out of participating in alt + right dogwhistles?

dough?

I could buy one slick art director. Or a Swedish company not being aware of the ramifications, but to think H&M thought this would drive business seems...out there.

This seems so perfectly passive-aggressive, as this can always be walked back as "oops, didn't even notice that... I don't even think like that. I didn't see race, I just saw a cute kid wearing an adorable shirt!"

I've concluded that we will never be free of blackface. I randomly saw this photo while googling:

https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1sj8PQVXXXXbsXFXXq6xXFXXXr/72pcs-set-NEUTRIHERBS-Black-Face-Mask-Remove-Blackheads-Dead-Sea-Mud-Acne-Treatment-Facial-Mask-Masker.jpg

And then I realized people will just do this: http://17663-presscdn-0-49.pagely.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/face-beauty-masks-.jpg and this: https://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/media/UND1-800x430.png

Just too many loopholes.

of a million dollar ad campaign for a multi-billion dollar corporation, beyond issues related health and safety?
Not to mention, models wear numerous articles of clothing during photo-shoots. It would be highly unlikely that he was the lone model to be photographed in that sweatshirt, or that he didn't also model all of the other clothing as well.
The decision for this child to be chosen with that shirt for the final campaign was approved by a long list of corporate representatives...all of who are paid far greater than this kid, or his parents were, to prevent controversy and own responsibility.

Examples of more of their great decision making...

I don’t know if you’re a parent or not but, when I think about it...it begins with the parents. They allowed it! They may have been right there when those photos were taken. You MUST consider that....

In response to Reply # 28

The burden is fully upon H&M.

The kid did his job and got paid, the issue with the shirt is contextual, it is entirely unlikely the parents would know, let alone have any input deciding those specific choices, beyond saying..."he's not wearing that", the answer would be "he's fired" and the kid's modeling aspirations would have come to an end.

Would you, as a parent, have piqued concern about your child wearing any sweatshirts available from a company like H&M?

The larger issue is a lack of corporate responsibility, I feel like you're ignoring that.

H&M couldn’t do anything without their permission....

I find it hard to believe that you in here arguing social responsibility but, think it’s more important that a parent pursue a child’s career over standing up to a company that may be making a fool out of them...

perhaps they never saw the front of shirt, to have read it and be offended.
perhaps the photo shoot was done in a country with non-English speaking models, who were unable to understand what was written.
perhaps they are immigrants, new to western stereotypes.
perhaps they were adoptive and of a different race.

Point, the responsibility for this campaign still belongs to H&M, not the parents on behalf of a contract worker.

There's not much wrong with the shirt, or the kid modeling it, for a parent to be concerned during a photo shoot.

The creative decision and the context is what's wrong.

That's solely H&M's problem, not the parents.

Because you as an individual would dash your child's modeling career, over an arguably innocuous sweatshirt, is an individual choice. A company deciding to perpetuate visualized racial slurs, as the theme of its brand's seasonal campaign, is a choice made upon various levels in a major corporation.

She even picked the models/dancers and had some great shots but the company fought her hard to put a Black model on the front and kept trying to put them in shitty outfits while putting chubby white kids in good costumes.

At the end of the day the company is going to do what they want to do.

Also had another friend who said an editor said he was sensitive when he put monkey business as the headline for some Black shit in a magazine article. He ended up leaving the company but it’s another example of white folks doing wtf they want cause it’s their company.

was maliciously intended or a thoughtless oversight.

I would like to believe this was thoughtless oversight. At worst I think it may have been a rogue art director or photographer or something. Not that I put it above white people, I just don't see any upside or reason why H&M would purposely create a racist AF ad.

I know I am going to get clowned for this but, continuing to be the optimist, I also think there is an argument that can be made that it is arguably progress that young black people (and young white people) don't make that visceral connection between black people and monkeys as racist symbol for black people the way older generations do.

isn't the goal to reach a point where there is actually nothing wrong with a little black kid wearing that t-shirt (or me eating watermelon at the company picnic)?

Not saying we are there yet at all, I'm just sayin.

Every year Black soccer players are in tears cause white folks in Wurope throw bananas at them and call them monkeys.

Once again I think you have too much faith in white folk Europeans have this little love affair with racism that usually involves monkey sounds.

Also, there is a white nationalist movement happening in Europe. Don’t try to defend this shit bruh... folks are way too intelligent to do something like this by mistake.

I don't know enough either way to argue too hard that it definitely was racist intent or just an oversight. I am just allowing for the possibility that it might just have been oversight.

I know there are a lot of racist Europeans but I would also like to think there are lots of Europeans (and White People in general) who don't immediately make an association between black people and monkeys.

You might be right, but it sucks to think all white people see you and see a monkey. just saying.

No you are saying that this HAS to be intentional. I am the one arguing that it is possible that this was not intentional.

To say that this has to be intentional is to believe that all white people have to make a racist association between black people and monkeys.

If you believe that not all white people make the racist association, then it logically follows that this may have been accidental.

Again, I am not arguing that this HAS to be accidental. I am arguing that it is possible that it might have been accidental. The distinction is important. If H&M does an investigation and uncover a racist ad maker, I wouldn't be shocked or wrong. If a third party did an investigation and conclude it was an oversight, I'd be pleased. That's it.

i feel like it's such a childish way to be racist

and the impact vs intent argument is always tough

bc with all the lessons of why these things can literally leave the people involved without jobs and/or the company boycotted...with all that at stake...they do this on purpose?

it's much more likely it's just inherent bias at work which is still offensive but...jesus im outrage fatigued man

i can't take childish monkey racist innuendo seriously man...monkeys are awesome lol

In response to Reply # 68

I definitely think some people try to get too cute and don't really think about the loss of jobs or a boycott or losing profits.

they just think "aha, he's black and it says monkey" it's "cute"

and cute is in parenthesis because they know it ain't cute.

Maybe it's fatigue because white folks don't stop. They can't not have these Afro parties and shit. Yeah, it gets tiring but not because of our reactions.

shut up already, damn

If the mother really did say she has no problem with it, she will cause the most harm, not the outrage.

not to conform to it. In other words, its only harmful if you arent doing the prep work.

everyone is not as sensitive as you and there’s nothing wrong with that...
