"Let's speak on these new Chappelle specials"

Loved the Equanimity one, that felt real good, had some good insights and some great jokes, just felt effortless and had the man hisself in a good place

I fell asleep while watching The Bird Revelation, it definitely had a different feel and like someone said in the Netflix thread is more similar to the «Dave trying out new jokes» clips that dropped on YouTube some years ago

U watched yet? What are your thoughts?

Not the taping but just one of the nights. Felt like the timing was much better in person. That he was real relaxed and paced where the special looked like joke after joke. There were also moments in the bird revelation that were in the dc show that didn't make the cut which may be why it seems like the timing was off.

An example was early in the show where he's talking about how dope he is. At our showing he started a conversation with a 16 year old, transitioned from how he started off in clubs, to the rough clubs in Brooklyn, and then did the rape joke, but at a much better speed. It really built up.

I enjoyed the bird revelation. It seemed more stream of consciousness than trying things out. Some of it was old. Some of it was very new. And some of the old stuff hit better. Take his deliberate way he told the iceberg slim story in 2017 versus how frantic and energetic he told it in 2005. Was it the venue was it the years was it a call back? Either way it's a different story.

Yeah it feels like a pacing thing. Jokes build much better in person.

I've come to the conclusion that Chris Rock is better at creating specials while Dave Chappelle is just a funnier person who is just funnier being conversational talking to an audience.

It felt like Dave Chappelle was genuinely using that set to just talk to the audience about real shit without forcing himself to string his comments into jokes. He seemed like he was having those thoughts for the first time and was gauging the audience to see how they honestly felt.

That set reminds of conversations I've had with my brother where we're just talking about life and the world....sometimes jokes get in there.....sometimes they don't.

I could see how some jokes could be taken out of context and offend folks but I think he did a good job of getting his point across.

Really funny and good insight overall. I really wish I had gone to see him when he came by.

Equanimity was his special. Bird Revelation felt like the DVD extras. I loved it as well, but I don't look at it as his special. Equanimity was better, of course because it was polished. Overall, it reminded me that when I thought I was killing it on stage, I wasn't doing SHIT. I'm motivated, though.

I think his views and analysis of race are still insightful and hilarious but he's kinda struggling to catch up with society on gender, sexual harassment, etc

The gratuitous use of "bitch" in the 2nd special really stuck out, particularly considering the subject matter of sexual harassment and, by extension, misogyny.

I was also struggling with his joke about having "weak spirit" if harassment keeps you from your goals. No doubt, successful people often go through extreme trials but let's not glamorize or condone the abuse many have had to endure to get where they are.

The idea of a "truth and reconciliation" commission for the entertainment industry was very interesting because I do believe there are alot of men sitting on the sidelines on the harassment issue because they're complicit with the system to some degree and don't want to be subject to a spotlight.

There is something obnoxious about how folks aren't allowed to speak on the topic unless they can perfectly express the "right opinion" on this stuff. I like the idea of the imperfect Ally which needs to be expanded upon.

I do think it was not an ideal time to use a pump analogy to explain his professional obstacles.

are at least partially due to him stepping away from the national stage as a performer. The "rules" of what's acceptable and not on the national stage are different than on the club level and he may not have been aware of how far things had shifted while he was "away".

Especially his routine about his son's Batman room. Maybe I look at things from the penis privilege too much, but Kevin of all people is the most benign comic to me.

but unless the shit is unfunny or just plain awful I’m laughing.

Sorry but I think every group needs to be joked. Folks want to be treated like regular people but don’t want comedians to joke them? What makes folks so special they can’t get joked on stage?

Shit, IMO when you get joked by one of the greats it’s a sign you have made it into
mainstream America. Congrats niggas.

but it's treated by many as if he hasn't caught up yet

I think he's well aware of where the so-called needle is on certain topics, and he's not necessarily fighting against that, as he is being comfortable with where he is, or reacting to things at his own pace, in his own way.

47. "^ yep. It's pretty clear IMO."
In response to Reply # 33

Cause he's not stupid. Like, he's very very very far from it. So to suggest that he's ignorant to where things are and "behind the times" is asinine. He's socially progressive, he's accepting. But he's a goddamn comedian. So in that context it's clear that he's carefully navigating the social sensitivity while still being himself and making it funny.

Like a few folks have already said in here, we live in a time where a lot of writers are trying to make a name for themselves or go viral so instead of watching comedy / things with an eye on critiquing on their merits, they are primarily just looking for the first opportunity to pounce.

28. "Different audiences have different boundaries"
In response to Reply # 23

And, usually, the bigger the stage and the bigger the audience, the tighter the boundaries.

A joke about gypsies might kill on a Saturday in Tampa, but instigate a boycott campaign by the Nomadic Eastern European People's Organization if it's shown on HBO.

Dave was doing things on a huge stage for awhile so I'm sure he's familiar with having to temper his language for his audience. This shit ain't new; Leno's early standup is very different from what he did on the Tonight Show.

I just think he lost touch with the how sensitivities were changing in the general public while he was doing small shows following the Chappelle Show. He was talking like he usually talked and didn't realize there was less tolerance in the general public for some his language.

Sure, if he’s on SNL or CBS Late night but it’s his special.

I think he can say whatever he wants and then deal with the backlash any way he wants because he is Dave Chapelle.

In response to Reply # 6

because it came off like "ah, you weak bitches took your ball and went home because of a freckled dick?" while he pretty much seemed to ignore that Louie was wielding the power he had over their careers so that they'd put up with him doing weirdo shit. Louie even acknowledged that much.

that said, i still laughed at the bit. i dug both specials. i don't think Dave cares about being in tune with where society sees itself on these issues, and I also don't think he wants to be the guy who's whining about pc all the time. I do think he's deliberate in saying he'll observe/react/speak on shit in his own way.

In response to Reply # 6

I haven’t seen the special yet but I’ve read the controversy.

I’m not really offended by much of anything but one thing I’m not cool with are the rape jokes because I just don’t find the humor in something that is so traumatizing to women who have been victims.

In this case, CK did not rape anyone but what I take issue with is the fact Chappelle has the nerve to talk about these women as if they are weak for not wanting to put up with this type of harassment. Isn’t this the same dude that ran out of Hollywood and complained about how they tried to make all black actors dress up like females?

In my opinion, you can’t fight one fight and not the other. Women have been abused for decades in the industry and shouldn’t have to deal with and damn sure shouldn’t be called weak for speaking up. If that’s the case, then Chappelle is a weak as fuck for running away from his show because he didn’t like how black people were being treated in Hollywood.

Both situations are bullshit and I’m not here to equalize them to any degree other than say they are both wrong and people SHOULD be speaking out against both.

The other time he lost respect was the bullshit he did to Hartford but I won’t go into that again.

9. "I did not appreciate the premise of the last bit in equanimity"
In response to Reply # 0

While I enjoyed both specials, this really stuck out to me.

So the joke is set up on the Emmett Till murder, and his lying accuser.
And Dave is trying to reconcile what happened to Emmett, the lies of his accuser and how that event "allowed" for Dave's success.

I think that shit is fucked up, and lacks context.
First of all, the idea that what happened to that child is in anyway "made up for" by where we've gotten to is fucked up. He did not ask to be a martyr, he never agreed to be murdered to further a cause. His mother did not agree to bury her child to inspire a movement. Nothing makes up for that. No one's success today can make up for what happened to that child. Nothing makes up for what happened to the child. Nothing.

Secondly, it's a misreading of history to think that the civil rights movement could not/would not have happened without Emmett Till (and his death). Yes, his murder was an galvanizing event, but the wheels were already in motion. There was and would have been a movement without the death of that boy. There were hundreds of Emmett Tills. It was not about that single child, it was about a country in which there were hundred of him.

Thirdly, let's not act like the Civil Rights movement was 100% successful and that shit is all sweet now. I'm in no way trying to downplay the movement or it's importance, but we still got black folks being shot down in the street with impunity -- which if you will recall was a specific pillar of the CRM. So... yeah.

Outside of a last minute thing - like I think Chris Rock did a "Tonight I'm running my hour at the Comedy Store - tickets on sale now", but generally it's just a drop in.

For these Chappelle tapings though - he did a run of like 7 nights in the Belly Room and all they did was say "Huge guest, you dont want to miss this - buy tix now" and I had a feeling so I bought them. When I got there, it was all but a certainty. It doesn't say secret for long. I did go the first night though.

If a comic is hosting something - the Emmys, SNL, Oscars, etc. - chances are they'll run material at the Store the week of.

Where is the outrage?!?

I think there is a space DC wants to work in and doesn't want a platform bigger than that space.

I think Louis CK problem was once he was elevated to that next level people started glossing over the darkness in his comedy and made him out to be the type of person who wouldn't whip his dick out (despite his comedy was clearly the comedy of a type of dude who would whip his dick out).

I don't think DC wants to be loved that much.

except write think pieces (which they did) about how he's behind the times and doesn't get it.

he touched on it in the second special. there's really nothing to take away from him. he doesn't seem interested in wanting to blow up again. i think he's enjoying a certain freedom in being in a place where outrage doesn't have much leverage over his career.

you really think Netflix is worried about a few fools and their faux outrage.

Unless Dave gets caught up in some #metoo shit Netflix will keep cutting those checks. Hell, I bet they would love the free publicity.

and he’s a big fucking deal.

I think folks don’t want it this time around because he did a great job holding the mirror up and letting them know they were doing too much. It’s just jokes. If you don’t find it funny it’s cool, turn it off. But don’t watch the whole thing, take notes and then try to get a few minutes out of fame with a little blog post about your poutrage.

CK was out there doing Subway Pervert 101 shit.

Chapelle, WORST CASE, was just fucking up with jokes thinking if he said 'im cool with y'all' would cover offensive case.

Id also argue he's not totally off the hook, lots of media places covered it and time will tell if it tarnished the brand or not.

I agree with DC not wanting to be loved much which is why he found a way of trying to make amends from the first round of netflix special criticism WORST, lol. But not caring what the perceived 'white' audience thinks is a tradition of black comedians and...well...Carlin, lol.

Me saying Segura's was more LOL funny isn't a knock against Rock's or Dave's. I liked them all, they were just all different. Someone nailed Rock's in the post about it, about it being different because it was more casual, more personal.

Shrug. Fuck you guys.

But yeah, what does Seattle have to do w/ anything? It was filmed in Denver (or at least I assume since he said "what's up Denver" and the whole crowd cheered). If you watched Segura in Seattle then you watched the wrong one.
