"how does heaven or hell fit into the natural world?"

as in, wha purpose does heaven & hell serve from an evolutionary standpoint? what purpose do they serve for life and survival of the species?

Assuming that there is a heaven and a hell.

I was having an imaginary argument with a christian in my head (don't judge me, I argue with people in my head all the time, you dont?) and this idea came up

Looking at the physical, natural world everything fits together. Everything is a component within a system or systems so its kinda weird the more I think about it that we have, like, two conflicting mental models of the world.

Either I've had not enough coffee or too much. This make any sense?

Heaven & Hell are simply narratives ...

The entire world is built on narratives... they are essential to human achievement and survival within large groups.. the stories can bind groups larger than the immediate tribe together..

Right, and this particular narrative has always
been about social control... but when you assume
they're real, it's a philosophical question with
many answers. I don't have the commitment to
tackling it today lol.

Narratives are natural...

its how we learn....

don't go into the wild alone... you will die.. cuz of lions/fairies/wolves etc..

We live in metaphor.. When you tell someone "I am feeling up"... you aren't literally going up... but UP is a metaphor for positive feeling/direction etc...

so stories are essential to learning and passing on knowledge... Heaven or Hell never had to be literal to be powerful for forward progress needed for civilizations that used it.

most behaviors are learned
which would mean there had to be a teacher, right?

it’s natural to chew when something is put in our mouth but we have to be told what to eat. what’s good...what’s bad.

Humans only exist because of the knowledge lf the group. If I left u in the woods as a baby you are dead.. group learning is essential therefore natural for out survival

>it’s natural to chew when something is put in our mouth but

You answered your own statement... there are behaviors conducive to success and those that are not. The person who listened to the story "dont go in the woods" survives to procreate.. the one that didnt.. is dead as fuck.. no genes are passed..

Good ol natural selection

In response to Reply # 11

>My question is who created it?

Since the earliest mention of a concept of
hell exists in ancient Egypt, I'd say the
Hyksos created it (they were Asiatic/Palestinian
invaders of Egypt during the 14th dynasty), b/c
the "Book of the Dead" doesn't come out until
after their invasion.
If you just invaded a land, you no doubt need to
implement tools of social control.
The Greek and Christian concepts evolve from theirs.

Not really though. There is so much about the natural world we don't understand. I just read last week that we are really beginning to question whether Dark Matter exist.

https://www.space.com/39001-dark-matter-doesnt-exist-study-suggests.html

Ok so the thing we thought that makes up 80% of the universe might actually not exist.

I think the truth is we know nothing about anything and we are just trying to make sense of it. The person who says absolutely heaven and hell exist sounds just as crazy to me as the person who says absolutely heaven and hell don't exist.

Yes there is a lot we dont know

BUT

Heaven and hell doesn't exist dog... except in our mind which might be as important as a physical place

As far as I know, the only way to get to either place was to die. If you live forever, in this world, you'd never reach them.

I always thought heaven & hell were completely, totally spiritual places.

In response to Reply # 16

but we understand the sky as open space, infinite and the ground as closed space, dirt, finite. so heaven is above, among the stars, while hell is contained within the same ground our cows shit and piss. the metaphor wouldn't hold if the roles were reversed, but unfortunately the metaphor was strong enough, like most religious metaphors, many people have taken it as fact, or at least forgotten the root of heaven and hell as a morality tale and emotional reward structure for doing good or bad things.

The universe exists... before us.. after us... etc..

we are trying to understand it because we can (hope to) and care to observe it

math is a tool to explain its workings in a way we understand.. a way that connects the dots matches patterns we observe etc..

these things (math, science) only serve to increase our understanding of the universe.. but once we are gone they dont matter

and the sun will still be hangin up there

Knowing how something works doesn't make it LESS amazing or awe-inspiring. We shouldn't mistake ignorance with profundity.

(Not trying to accuse you of anything here, BTW, I just think this is an error that people frequently make.)

Beacuse the supernatural is a world solely for the individual and his or her brain..

The universe does not need human observation to continue... it does not need us to explain it...

Dinosuars survived swimmingly w/o any need for explanation way longer than us and maybe way longer than we will be here as a species..

Universe keeps ticking regardless..

super natural phenomenon is us trying to make sense of what we observe and create connections from patterns we think exist....

but you are ultimately inconsequential to the universe on any scale larger or smaller than the human scale..

But only YOU/WE see the beauty.. your brain makes it beautiful..

here is how crazy our brain vs the world is... blue didnt exist as a color until recent human times (Egyptians)

https://www.sciencealert.com/humans-couldn-t-even-see-the-colour-blue-until-modern-times-research-suggests

So you look at the sky and see a beautiful BLUE sky only because some civilization created the word.. not because that is literally what it is...

So your you are saying something is beautiful and then saying because it is something/one created it.. when its only beautiful because your brain makes it so...

in stuff that science or time hasn't quite figured out. or used to say this good fortune, whatever that may be, is due to god and not simply timing.

if you find a 20 on the sidewalk, you might thank god for smiling on you. does that mean god is frowning on the person that lost it?

we currently live in an unnatural state which should be pretty obvious

Hell is a place for that which desires to live separate from it's creator and since the creator is the source of all lifeforms it's a place devoid of life since there is zero presence of the creator

“Why?”
