You could spend two full days in there and still miss things. Hands down the best museum I've ever been to.

At least with my schedule it is. But that is the goal by spring.
Until then my pick will probably be either the Met or Air and Space Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Walking around an actual Concorde, SR-71 and space shuttle is really awesome.

i haven't seen anything in the U.S. that can touch the following:

neues (nefertiti's bust + so many egyptian artifacts), pergamon (ishtar gate),
brandhorst (ultra ultra modern), hamburger bahnhof (contemporary/modern),
deutsches (it's epic, the world's largest museum of science and technology)
...can't choose just one. also, stedelijk in amsterdam is awesome.

favorite is the Wharton Esherick Studio Museum

http://www.whartonesherickmuseum.org/

Not a famous famous guy, but certainly amazing and a local slice of history. Museum takes about an hour, mostly to be visited on small group tours.

One I've been to most is probably the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia since my kids have always loved it. For about five years we were going at least bimonthly. Tapered off now as the kids are older and busier on weekends. Still fun to take them back for the fossil festival, bug fest, etc.

Biggest emotional impact on me was the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. The Museum itself is powerful as hell but the various little memorials spread around the blast zone are also crazy.

I know it's a cliche answer, but I just took the wife and kid to Paris this past summer, and I was blown away.

I studied graphic design in college and with that came several art history courses. To see all those works that I had only seen in books, all in one place, was astonishing.
