"Really good movies with really bad lead actors. "
Thu Dec-07-17 08:07 AM by DavidHasselhoff

"Gran Torino" is a perfect example in my opinion. The brother and sister were some of the worst lead actors I've ever seen in a big movie.

Or did that movie just suck?

I JUST had this conversation with someone last week. She's terrible.

I still crush on her though.

The only movie I saw that she was pretty decent in was Matchpoint.

One of the greatest films ever made, starring pretty-boy Ryan O'Neal.

He actually played that part really damn well, as far as I'm concerned, but he never really did anything else of a similar caliber. Kubrick was a master at getting great performances out of mediocre actors. (Or, at least, a master of making a film so great you don't care about the performances.)

Such stiff, wooden performances devoid of any real emotion.

The "not like this" chick had more emotion in that one line than neo & trinity did throughout the entire series.

The Matrix movies would be so much better with a lead actor who can actually emote. Will Smith would have nailed it

They wanted people who basically didn't know how to express themselves, at all, to tie them closer to the Matrix than the rest of the characters and hint at them being a part of the code to break the Matrix.

It's one of the few things from that movie that still works for me. Really, all the concepts still work but very little of the execution holds up anymore. Just watched 1 and 2 recently and I really had to constantly remind myself how damn much I loved the first movie and how cool I thought a lot of Reloaded was when they first came out.

And Mainly because of Nas' underacting throughout the whole film (and T-Boz too now that I think about it, funny how the two most boring actors in the movie are married in the script)

BUt the Cinematography,
DMX's performance
Method Man's Performance
the Harmony Korrine Moment
the Soundtrack
DMX's Wife and Girlfriend
The Jamaican big time dude

A lot about this movie just worked well.

Melvin Van Peebles is kinda TERRIBLE in this film. He doesn't have much dialog and the scenes where he's supposed to be such an incredible Sex symbol are hilariously mundane

But there's something about the overall vibe of this movie that's so rebellious and off kilter that it seems like a bad fever dream.

There's about 3 scenes that are mostly monologues that end up being the best moments of acting in the entire movie (and are delivered by people besides the main character)

especially since I had just seen Baadaaassss (sp?) by Mario Van Peebles. Melvin isn't good at all and the film's narrative doesn't work. Also, in retrospect, Melvin pretty much abused Mario to make the film.

I tried hard to take in the film with the proper context in mind but I didn't fully succeed.

There was so much hype about that film, but I have no idea what's so special about it. It creeped me out more than anything.

There's a nightmarish quality to it. Everything is so off kilter and hard to see at points.

It doesn't look/sound/feel like your average movie.

Dave Lynch gets called a genius for similar shit

I think Melvin could've developed his approach into something genuinely unique had he been able to have funds to do multiple films. I like the ominous feel of the film. Films today really have a hard time emulating that grimy feel that 70s films had.

The content, especially in retrospect, gets harder to stomach with every passing year. I lowkey wanted to see someone remake this plot out of curiosity.

"Badasss!!!", which was written, directed, and stars Mario Van Peebles. He's not very good in it, and there's issues with the writing and direction, but I still REALLY like the movie. Maybe because the overall story and the supporting cast is so good.

since its low budget and made with his friends I give it a pass and it is funny, but the acting isn't great. This goes for all Kevin Smith movies tho but this is still his best.

Great is subjective for these but Jean Claude Van Damme and Segaal movies I enjoyed, Bloodsport, Hard to Kill, etc, def not great due to acting.

Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York is awful as well.
