what type of work would you like to be doing? (short-term and long-term)
Heavy questions, I know.. but the risk to your job prospects depends a lot on what you're after, no?
I mean, if you hope to remain in academia.. the hurdles there are largely separate from any Trump mandates (unless you do climate change research lol), but still offer a bit of insulation..
If you want to land in private sector - I can definitely see it being more competitive right now in the DC area, as you describe. But DC's a weird market too, because so many private sector entities here center their ops around serving one or more government agencies. So maybe private sector could be a back-up plan if you originally hoped to end up in government?? The last time I was in private sector, the colleagues I had coming from your situation seemed to be valued most on the Business Development side of things. So if you have grant-writing experience or have worked extensively with certain funders that may be attractive because they like subject matter experts who they can also throw on a proposal effort to win more business. But the right fit is key.
And if you wanted to land in government - have you considered applying for a AAAS fellowship?? I know some agencies that use it as a pipeline to get around HR headaches (literally, crawling with AAAS fellows). And PMFs are typically exempt from hiring shenanigans too. But then again, the risks in gov are largely agency-dependent.. I'd worry about anyone looking to work somewhere in the political crosshairs (EPA, CFPB, USAID, etc.). Funding for the public health agencies is always a struggle, but Congress dealt them their death blow pre-Trump with the Cures Act. So only a couple of health-focused agencies are sitting comfortably with ample budgets promised (lol, bet you can't guess who..), but HHS still has a hiring freeze in effect. So again, I recommend not sleeping on the AAAS fellowship because would at least buy a couple of years and the connections gained are crazy.
