"Net Neutrality is done"
Tue Nov-21-17 01:20 PM by shygurl

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/21/technology/fcc-net-neutrality.html

The Federal Communications Commission announced on Tuesday that it planned to dismantle landmark regulations that ensure equal access to the internet, clearing the way for companies to charge more and block access to some websites.

The proposal, put forward by the F.C.C. chairman, Ajit Pai, is a sweeping repeal of rules put in place by the Obama administration that prohibited high-speed internet service providers from blocking or slowing down the delivery websites, or charging extra fees for the best quality of streaming and other internet services for their subscribers.

The clear winners from the move would be telecom giants like AT&T and Comcast that have lobbied for years against regulations of broadband and will now have more control over the online experiences of American consumers. The losers could be internet sites that will have to answer telecom firms to get their content in front of consumers. And consumers may see their bills increase for the best quality of internet service.

“Under my proposal, the federal government will stop micromanaging the internet,” Mr. Pai said in a statement. “Instead, the F.C.C. would simply require internet service providers to be transparent about their practices so that consumers can buy the service plan that’s best for them and entrepreneurs and other small businesses can have the technical information they need to innovate.”

The plan to repeal the 2015 net neutrality rules also reverses a hallmark decision by the agency to declare broadband as a service as essential as phones and electricity, a move that created the legal foundation for the net neutrality rules and underscored the importance of high-speed internet service to the nation.

The proposal is widely expected to be approved during a Dec. 14 meeting in a 3-to-2 majority vote along party lines.

The actions by Mr. Pai, who was appointed by President Trump, is the centerpiece of a deregulatory agenda that has also stripped television broadcasters, newspapers and telecom companies of a broad range of regulations meant to protect the public interest.

it was a term created in the early 2000s by an academic in dialogue with other academics.

it should have been re-branded by liberals to a term that is more relatable to everyday people.

'consumer' vs 'customer'.

Doesn't matter what liberals name something really when the oppositions MO is to denigrate and then misinform.

essentially framed it as a death bill.
even gained support for single payer (smartly coined the term 'medicare for all').

we seem to be winning the messaging battle on 'tax reform' too.
essentially framing it as a handout to billionaire donors.

these are some of the most unpopular major pieces of legislation ever according to public opinion. and liberals broke through the conservative bubble to the point that repubs didnt get sucked in by propaganda to the extent that they have on other issues.

we should be winning the messaging battle on net neutrality too but like a lot of people in here have said...they didnt even know what it is (and this is *after* the massive pr campaign in 2014/2015).

repubs have an advantage with a complex hive of well coordinated megaphones (and now help from a foreign bot/troll army) but it can be overcome with some principled strategy.

our only hope is really they go too far with it and people realize they need to reprioritize (see the nfl, some social media, cable, etc.).

i know that's what happened to me with gaming and fantasy sports. i couldn't play the hours a week it took to stay on pace with my gaming friends, so i just stopped. i don't really have any urge at all to play, but a few years ago, i was making decisions on living spaces and vacations based on whether i'd have a reliable internet connection.

edit: we also do so much online and with social networks that are mandatory, and net neutrality is an important right in that context. it's annoying as fuck not having access to youtube in my classroom. journalists basically need twitter/facebook access in 2017.

Imagine the ISPs charging hospitals more to access medical data/charts because a rival company owns the company that manages the data. Those excess charges will be passed onto you.

Imagine your kids tuition going up because now the university has to pay more for journals because one journal had a study that showed a telecom in a bad light and the school's service provider wants to punish them.

Imagine your electric bill goes up because Verizon has a controlling interest in your electric company but you get internet service from Comcast. Comcast decide anybody who has this company needs to use the company that they have a controlling interest in, so as a result they charge you more to access Verizon's electric company website.

Like, fuck wasting time on social media, the possibility for these companies to fuck over the average consumer is limitless. We are truly going to be fucked.

you don't need the government to allow the telecoms to force it on you by jacking up the cost of your internet access for you.

if you actually trying to run a business its going to make it WAY harder.

The internet is more than webapps. Hospitals use it, factories use it, farmers use it, etc. It should be classified as a utility at this point.
