my MIL thinks she is slick. Since we celebrate Christmas with my family she makes sure we give her Thanksgiving. That wouldn't be a problem but sometimes she be slipping when it comes to the food. One year we got there and she had Cornish Hens. I was mad as shit.

Then last year she got a Bojangles fried turkey and since SHE didn't like it she left it out thanksgiving night and it dried out. I was mad as shit.

Can't wait for my babies to play with their cousins. I'm chilling and watching sports all weekend on my FIL's 70" TV.

I'm bringing a few Patty Label Sweet Potato Pies. I think I'm going to have to get in this kitchen this year. Folks be slippin'

children playing be the best...creating memories. It’s probably the only time I let them run wild. As for dinner, we don’t “import” anything, folks know not to bring anything. My mother makes everything. I still haven’t picked up the turkey and she keeps asking. The kicker for us this year is my drunk uncle. the uncle that gets drunk and shows all the way out. Malt liquor and cigarettes are cheaper here so we have trouble containing him. He’s no crack head tho so we can manage after a few cussing outs.

I can’t imagine spending this day without my family but I suppose once I get a husband I’ll have to. They just better be cool.

why don’t y’all host? like, have everyone come to y’all?

what’s up Legs 😊

In response to Reply # 2

Thanksgiving is primarily at my MIL's but we hosted a few years back when we first bought the house.

My fam has no problems on air mattresses and being piled on top of each other as well. Nothing is more fun than having a house full of family.

One of the reasons I want a bigger house is just so we can host more holidays.

I'm glad my wife gets to experience how my fam does it cause she dreads going to her moms but I think part of it is just frontin cause every year she complains about it but right before it comes up she gets excited and changes her tune.

My Dad was that uncle too before he stopped drinking. One year he got drunk and burned the turkey. We had ham that year. Shit was a mess. It was funny but it wasn't funny.

My grandmother was always late as shit too. We would have dinner at 9PM. So I would eat at my moms at 1PM then go out and play football and eat again at 9pm.

SoWhat and i were discussing this a month or so ago, it really has it all. Food, family, bourbon and football.

and unlike Christmas, everyone can just chill and there's not the stress of presents and all that crap.

we're hosting this year, but we don't cook everything. we have everyone pitch in. it's not a huge group of people, either, so there's that.

No family so it's just hubby and the kid.

Food requires less work this year - got a turkey from Whole Foods and the sides from Neiman Marcus. I just have to make mac & cheese and a dessert.

We'll eat, go to the movies and take the kid to the park.

biggest expense is the cheese for the mac n cheese. I might go slightly over cause I'm putting 4 or 5 cheeses in my shit this year.

obviously stuff like butter and milk should be in the house already.

and I ain't doing no exotic dressing with imported celery or whole foods cranberries. none of that 50 million spices either..

shit gonna be butter, salt, pepper and garlic.. and maybe some paprika

Even the legendary Pigalle 120 cost more than a few sides. It cost even more than a whole meal from NM, which averages about $400.

remember that friend I told you I was mad at?

I went to her and told her I miss our friendship and we should talk about what happened. We agreed It wasn’t a good time to have a discussion, A few days later I run into her, “hey, we still need to have that discussion”

her: “yeah. I don’t know”
me: “you don’t know?”
her: “yeah”
and she walked off

I can be done with her now, right?

Two things...

someone once told me to marry an orphan that way you don’t have to worry about their family.

thanksgiving is kind of our thing. when I was back home, my son and his family always came up for it. last year we didn’t make the trip because my son couldn’t get off work. everyone was depressed both here and there. We decided on a fish fry. we just couldn’t eat thanksgiving food without the rest of the family. One of my wild cousin back home called us like, “if y’all down there struggling y’all should move back home” lol

All because we fried fish...

we family...

My siblings, though, won't be in town until super late on Wednesday so so much for getting them to at least play sous chef... :-/

I’ve served them before. My family is too traditional to serve it for thanksgiving and my mother would probably faint. I can see the kids liking it. Id present as their own little turkey,

I like your menu

I'm an only child, and it was just me, mom, and dad. There was no need for a big ass turkey, so we'd cook a few cornish hens and all that other good stuff.

(plus, I like mostly sides, so a lot of meat would be wasted on me.)

Thanksgiving is cool, but I'm mostly just looking forward to a week off hanging with family.

I'm slightly mad though because I just splurged on all new really nice bedding but I'm going to have to sleep on an air mattress all week while my Dad enjoys it instead lol.

and we'll have snacks and apps to munch on until the big meal with plenty drinks to share.

like i said, it's a really smallish crew. my family of four, my lil sis in law, pop-pop, grandma and that's probably about it. pop-pop cookin' the turkey, so he'll be here early to get that goin. grammy will probably make us some greens and something else (but she can't stay for dinner cause her husband is an asshole and they go to his family for that), and grandma will make something(s) too. it always works out. but fuck if we're cooking the whole damn dinner. we're the ones with the kids, they got more time than us Haha.

I was actually fine with getting a small catered joint and chilling at home. But NOOOOOOO...they all wanna fly in from different parts of the country on different flights,at the last minute, and stay on the other side of town. Of course, I'm one of the few with wheels, so I'm gonna be driving back and forth and doing all the dumb shit.

It's turning into a shitshow.

nothing like a dramatic family....

my family should get in sometime tomorrow. I feel like I'm turning into my mother. Her prep game has always been on point - it's part of the reason we ate thanksgiving so early. Like, she started on the 1st on the month.

Everything with her, "I'll do it when I get there"

yesterday, I ask for permission to start the cornbread for the dressing. She hesitated but, allowed it.

This morning, I asked if I should cut up the celery, onions and peppers. {She'd kill me if I bought the pre cut stuff}.her, "nah, I'll do it when I get there"

I had to change my tone to get her to allow for that. LOL

Like, "look mom, you won't get in Tuesday night, you'll shop all day Wednesday and we ain't eating thanksgiving late". Can't be ruining tradition LOL

she replied: "gone and cut them up"

yet. I wouldn't be surprised if she starts fresh....

Is she the 'Take over the Kitchen' type? My aunt it like that when she comes to town, but she can burn, so we get out of the way and let her work her magic.

My MIL has a program at the church that she threw last year and she ants to do it again. She ain’t did shit yet tho. She can’t even open MSWord and update the program so my wife and her sister are gonna be ripping and running.

My sister in law called and my MIL’s husband was like “get here ASAP” she asked about the actual Thanksgiving Dinner since it’s THANKSGIVING. He replied.. ehhh, we gonna have to order food cause it’s an afterthought right now.

Hell nah...

So my wife and her sister tried to have an intervention on some “maybe you shouldn’t have the event since you got so much going on” but as soon as they got on the phone with her it was “tell us what we need to do”

Man... you don’t mind cooking but I hate how these women in their family always doing too much. Just sit down and enjoy the holiday.

i figured that would be your reply. i wasn't asking in a judgemental way, we always ate earlier than other people when i was growing up too.n i was never really sure why.

it always seemed too early for me, but what was i supposed to do about that? haha, nothing. just eat now and make a sandwich later.

picture this tho...

I didn’t learn about eating late until I started having friends. As long as I can remember my entire “generation” ate dinner early...and not just on thanksgiving. funny. as a child I remember after church going to my aunt house that lived right across the street. She have the table laced with everything imaginable. Probably one of the best cooks of the family. She dead now but, her daughter...coming down with my mama. She cooks just like her.

Oh! We bout to throw down!

our “sets” usually go like this
eat
party
eat some more
party
We sleep the next morning...

Not sure why..

Maybe it’s because my mom wanted to chill for the rest of her Sunday or holiday

My dads side of the fam? 9PM.

and my niece. She is a cook so she always cooks like she’s feeding 50 people. Late as shit even tho she been prepping and cooking for 2 days.

I’m about to plan my shit tonight and tomorrow to make sure I have everything done at the same time.

My wife wants to buy fresh sweet potatoes but I’m thinking canned ones will speed the process along. Is that cheating?

all this Fuck Thanksgiving and whatnot I'm hearing lately?

It's not like we're sitting around the table planning another mass genocide. I'm eating pie and watch the football game with my cousins, man. Where's the harm in that?

I can appreciate it because it forces me to explain myself...

Authenticity...

I believe volunteering can be in many forms because it boils down to giving up time. It’s one of those questions I deem inappropriate because then were compare how we should be spending our time.

My time is my time..

I admire selfless people.
there’s something special about them
Like. it’s a whole different vibe when it comes to their work
I don’t have that vibe in instances of how you and big jazz may be defining it

Im sure you’ve seen the phonies
or nah....

NAH, not trying to talk about thanksgiving and bring back memories. Whole house smelling like crap for a good week because of her "cleaning" the chitterlings.

Thanksgiving is a less cool Australia Day anyways. I'm all for volunteering to help those in need.
