This is definitely lacking in terms of what we've come to expect instrumentally from these guys. But the song still goes so I'm hoping it's just the attention-grabbing first drop, with more of the typical NERD-esque instrumentation work still to come.

Hell, their first single Lap Dance without the rock guitars (which the OG version didn't have) would sit perfectly next to this single on the shelf.
In a world where every two bit forward thinking soundcloud hip-hop & R&b artists are borrowing from their playbook I like the sharp left turn towards silly party music they took here, particularly since they were great at that also.

Pharrell wrote her verse, and as is common with Neptune/Pharrell productions, he also wrote the cadence for the verse. It was smart to add her for popularity sake tho. People are eating up the novelty of Rihanna rapping. I always liked Ri's voice and often thought she sounded more like she was talking than singing, so I'm not surprised she sounds good rapping lol. I actually like Pharrell's rapping voice too, but the variance works well here... noticing stuff like that and being humble enough to take a back seat is part of what makes Pharrell so great. I could ride to this. I'd like to hear a remix with Missy or just a full Missy album produced by Pharrell... hopefully they're working on that after her last single.

The combination of her voice, cadence and flow is what makes it work. Don't care who wrote it, and assume the work on cadence and flow was collaborative.

Not sure if it was written for Diddy, but it's definitely a reference track. I actually didn't expect to hear a version w/o Rihanna when I clicked on the audio version. I do like the version with her more tho... and I happen to like Pharrell's rapping voice.

I mean I guess big pop albums might be the way you want to go a la Gorillaz but I think they kinda lost the plot on what made NERD, well NERD. They always had a great sense of pop and hooks, how can you not with Pharrell. But NERD was a unpretentious break from the larger then life Neptunes productions that were ubiquitous in 00's hip-hop and R&B...I don't think the songs are served with 30 life dancers, nahmean
