Quick backstory...I'm a virtually life-long diabetic. For a good portion of my life, I had no health insurance. I lost most of the sight in my left eye a couple of years ago, now legally blind in that eye, nothing can be done.
Fast forward to mid-August. I wake up one morning, and I can't focus. I got an emergency appointment with my opthamologist...who couldn;t do anything but send me to a retina specialist...that did nothing. Four specialists and two arguments with my insurance company later (over a three day span) I end up at Wills Eye Hospital in Philly (thank you Dr. Mehta and your staff).
That was August 24th. The surgery left me with one repaired eye needing weeks to recover and a legally blind eye, so for weeks all I could see isvery dark shapes. Couldn't read anything...had to listen to TV...friends that I've known for 20+ years came to visit and I didn't know them unless I recognized their voice or asked who they weethe local fire department only had to come once (LOL) Did I mention that i live alone with no family in the area?
Over the last two weeks or so, my vision has started to return in the right eye. I can read enlarged print and hopefully that will continue to improve. I'm very thankful that I was led to a skilled surgeon that helped to save my eyesight. This has shown me that JAH will provide for those with both faith and proper effort. (Faith without works is dead)
I say all of ^^^^that to say this...most of us neglect to properly care for/treat our eyes...take care of your eyesight, because as I learned the hard way, like the song says, you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.

funny, because my mother had cataract surgery last week. She never mentioned it until it was over. She said she didn't tell me because I would worry. I didn't like it.
Only 4 people knew about my situation beforehand (and two of them were because they gave me rides to appointments and the hospital...and for the same reason (not to cause worry) .

and control the lower half of my body due to a tumor on my spine... it's so easy to take these things for granted... even after you've been through some ish it can be to easy to slip back into complacency.

Good to know that you overcame the issues with the tumor

Took for granted something so amazing (the biology of sight will have you in awe from just the collab from eye-frontal lobe alone). Short story:mowed grass without eye protection and faulty side guard this weekend. Stone hits my eye and is sore all day. Fret at night: like if this don't get better in the morning I am so fucked ( my eyes are the biggest part of my job). You are right, you have no idea how much we depend on our sight and take it for granted. Good PSA.

so that hopefully the next person can avoid the same trials, just as others that came before me have done for me.

I spent about half of last year in some sort of pain. Nothing major, but just one thing after the next that was a drain on daily life. This year is much better, and I keep trying to remind myself to be grateful for every day without pain, or just good health in general, because we tend to not think about it until things go south.
Nothing close to what you're going through though. I'm glad to hear your surgery went well and you're recovering.

especially when in many cases one problem unchecked can lead to many others.

I thought I blinded myself years ago. was changing a fuel injector on my car. put it in. sealed everything. put the fuel rail back down. went to crank the car and didn't crank.
went back to look at the injectors. removed the fuel railed. gas sprayed from one the injectors all into my face and eyes.
I ran into our apt, where my wife was asleep with the new baby. I'm calling name like I been shot. lol. I hop in the shower to rinse my eyes. shit was burning but no real issues otherwise. stayed red for a while.
