which is what he is saying here

this incident makes me wonder if "i don't remember that" is gonna be the new "i'm sorry if you were hurt/feel that way" (a deflecting way of not really being culpable or admitting fault...more of an "i pity you for being weak" kinda response)

time will tell i guess

subtle enough for the people who hear it to question themselves as "too sensitive"...like im sure it was just coincidental or something. if you speak out on it then it only gives the racists more ammo

1. it was an asshole thing to do
2. way way not cool
3. she did suffer
4. yes, comedians rep the good ol' boys club. FOR SURE.

that said, part of me wonders and not to justify racist behavior if, IF, and I do not know David Cross at all, but IF David was acting in the form of a ball busting asshole ass comedian. Comedians are notorious for being jerks to each other and I guess, I part of me was thinking "was this a piss poor attempt at ball busting an upcoming comedian?"

eh.

this is the same dude that admitted to doing coke at the White House back in 2009...

Regardless, these white guys think they can build an instant rapport with minorities by immediately pointing out the fact that they have a different race than you. Then they lean too hard into it as a way of being "ironic" and showing them they clearly understand these stereotypes are ridiculous. Never mind that minorities are not here for you to preform your version of enlightened whiteness..

Or maybe he is just a coked out bully that will do something to someone because they think they can get away with it. And when you can show that you are someone that runs in the same circles as you and are not disposable, then suddenly they remember you and the "context" they place you in.

what if when we see him being a sexist racist asshole, he's actually being a sexist racist asshole?

that we have comedy conventions that revolve around being sexist racist assholes makes it okay? sexism and racism are *conventional.* that would excuse everyone who acts that way.

i wasn't there, but where's the evidence that david cross is somehow the shining beacon in our society that couldn't possible be racist or sexist? todd fucking margaret? he doesn't get to wink and nod his way out of it and demean her instead of responding decently.

because if that's okay, then we're just going to slippery slope our way to grab em by the pussy. locker room talk. yes comedians talk that way to each other. that. is. what. we. mean. when. we. say. our. culture. is. racist. and. sexist.

yes producers talk about women that way. yes old white women in my city talk about people of color that way. how is that an excuse?

i also don't see why you'd think gaslighting is a new concept to me. i'm replying to the post title.

and this fucking week? this is the week you want to say, nah, david cross is cool. he hates the president. he makes jokes about close minded people. so of course, he's right, she's wrong. and if she's right, well, it doesn't matter, cause david cross was just trying to be funny.

fuck. that.

all he had to do was say...well, shit, it would be awful if i did that. i'm not perfect, and i am sure i have made mistakes. we can do better. i believe her.

and if he really means that talking to her in private shit, then have the decency to keep it private.

and let's be clear, i'm not accusing you of shit, but if you do want to push it, there are plenty of dudes on okp that have a history of feeling a certain way when these topics come up, and we see the patterns.

if you want to establish a pattern, dig that hole.

yes, it's clearly ridiculous that i think it's possible that david cross was actually being sexist and racist and these pathetic attempts to rationalize it are further reflections of the sexism and racism that permeates our society.

it's hilarious how delusional i am.

David Cross is one of those comedians who makes up jokes sometimes so he can use slurs (Russell Peters and Louis CK have done this too). He does material that's on the line and then makes the typical excuses (free speech, people are PC, it's only comedy) when he called out.

I don't if he truly is a racist or not but it's not like some of his jokes and comments aren't racist on their own.

You're only running your fucking mouth like that because the internet. You don't know enough about me to equate me to any kind of people.

Sometimes things are not really a joke. Sometimes they are. I'm referring to a standup where Cross' button-pushing seemed like he was intending to be racist versus using slurs for an effect.

The idea that a joke (or any statement) can't also be a very real statement on what someone believes about a group of people is silly. People do it all the time. I didn't say I hated that style of humor. I didn't even say that David Cross shouldn't be able to make those kind of jokes. I was making the point that there are occasions where the intent of a joke seem more malicious than humorous or observational.

I still watch Louis CK and Russell Peters. I don't fuck with David Cross because I find some of the intent of his comedy to be suspect.

If you fuck with it fine. To each his own.

As you should know, comedy on hot button issues is going to be offensive to some of it ain't funny. I have laughed at plenty comedy about race and gender and class et al. And plenty of it has made me groan. That's just how it is. Comedians know this risk. They don't need you here doing their bidding. It's okay. Relax.

Some of David Cross' more racist jokes don't even work as jokes. People are trying to act as if comedians don't slide veiled statements in with their jokes sometimes.

Smh.

Im not here doing anybody's work and yes comedians know the risk of saying whatever they want when pushing the line in the bit. WHAT you and many people fail to mention is that YOU and the audience are taking a risk of walking into a show or listening to a comedian and taking bits as facts or statements. You consciously blur the lines whenever you feel your morals or your feelings are hurt. Ridiculous.

You ask comedians or artists to take ownership or responsibility but never ask the same for yourselves. I'm as left as the next person but this blurring of the lines to coddle individual feelings is fucking pathetic to me. You and everyone who CHOOSE to think like this are embarrassing and are the main reasons the left get NOTHING done. You make us stop to fight these low hanging fruit battles that don't actually affect the world just individuals who are too sensitive. You like to point to the right and say they are sensitive too but you guys are just the same. Politics these days have brought out the stupid and sensitive and thats who is clogging up headlines these days. You guys are no different than them.

they can get away with it or they are so clueless they don't even register it. If a white comedian introduced themselves to a Black comic in their wigger stage persona or whatever, theyd get checked or at the very least clowned on. But this is something white guys do, comic or not a comic. They're all one PbR away from full Black face. Bring out the goldschlager and they'll let Jeff Dunham stick their hand up their ass, while they try to muster their *spot on* Akhmed the terrorist impression.

clowning on a comic for wearing "tattered clothes", as she described them, *is* something a comic would clown another comic for...it was probably funny too. it just probably escalated way too quickly

These alt-comedy people are not built for this shit. But if that's what it takes so we can get more maria bamfords and less amy schumers then so be it. FWIW all the bits Charlyne's done on Conan were funny to me.

That's a problem with being around comedians. They often lack awareness of decorum and boundaries and can't sense when to turn off the fucking schtick. It's exhausting. Maybe she wasn't there for ball busting and Cross didn't pick up on it. He's still in the wrong. Just bc comedians do it 'all the time' doesn't mean it's appropriate EVERY time. It's okay for her to have been hurt and for him to have apologized.

And Patrice was a fucking asshole. Fuck that guy.

B: someone else's account of experiencing face to face racism where there wasnt an on stage performance

if you're saying A and B are the same because a slur was used as part of a joke in situation A, that's why I dont think *you're* smart enough to discuss how the world works

when most times the use of the word nigger in a joke isn't needed or funny.

It's just white people who want to say Nigger in public or on camera.

That Quentin Tarantino bullshit where every one of his movies has someone saying nigger.

She was talking about a homeless person shouting (in San Francisco where thats very common) and she paraphrased him with "f'in nigger". That was last year and I'm still mad right now that she only censored the f-word. We drop f-bombs in the office all day so that wasn't even necessary!!!

I don't do that cheer for the race in a sport because they look like me, much like you probably do. Thats that simple minded simple bitch mentality that you DEFINITELY fall under.

Keep on keeping the fight bruh.

she's diagnosed bipolar
but RZA admitted she was telling the truth about Russell Crowe
there's room for both to exist

none of which has a thing to do with you going to bat for a comedian accused of racism against an Asian woman

also, good job using "fat" as some sort of insult after shouting out Patrice O'Neal earlier in this post

I made your response to ME about YOU, because that's what its really about.

Please learn the difference and this is why you always get caught up in shit on here. I mentioned your thread as an example of how you are constantly trying to prove yourself on this board. You hold on to shit for so long trying to prove to this board when you don't need to. She's simply brought up NOW because she happens to be the example, this does not make it about HER. How simple minded are you? Geez.

Do you always deflect shit in arguments in real life so you can play victim or change the focus? Thats all I ever see you doing on here when you get into shit with people.

I upped an existing post with new details, that's it

if Azealia Banks came out and said "I lied about everything, I apologize to Russell Crowe and RZA" I would have also upped the post

you have a running narrative in your head about me trying to prove shit on here and you reintroduced it for no reason in this post. have fun in your fantasy world

Spends sooo much energy and time trying to identify with American culture, but really gets exposed in discussions about race. Its happened time and time again too here lol.

That we are the world, hold hands, play hockey and embrace Canadian white homogeny don't work here. Sorrrrrrrrrrrrrrry

He apologized because it offended her. But he thought she was in on the joke or familiar with his comedy. She wasn’t.

Not sure if I’m missing something.

It goes into all the reasons why this is a terrible apology. I'm sorry you were offended =/= I'm sorry my contextless "ironic" performance of racism is offensive

He’s clearly sorry she was offended. He doesn’t remember offending her. And he’s stating that was not his intention. And he wishes to reach out to her so they can clear the air.

Seemed pretty straight forward to me.

Comedians make bad jokes and/or sometimes offend people. Seems like he acted real familiar with someone who he wasn’t familiar with.

and that he apologizes for hurting her. He could have even got away with saying he didn't intend disrespect but the comments are obviously hurtful.

I think in general people don't know how or are willing to apologize when they make a mistake. People make mistakes. Adults realize when they do, make amends to correct or end the behavior, and repair the relationship with the person or group who was offended. Making a mistake doesn't mean someone is inhuman. Doubling down on the mistake makes someone immature and reflects poor judgement and character.

I will admit, the whole “my jeans were tattered because I was poor” sounds like bullshit. Folks been wearing ripped us jeans for 30 years as a fashion statement. I bet she still wears ripped up jeans like the rest of these idiots out here.
