"Old school cats 40 and up... lemme holla at y’all for a sec."

Are y’all scared of these young cats? Talked at length the other day and these dudes are scared as hell of these young cats, and I’m like wtf?!?!?!????

I think these young cats just need some love shown to them because NO ONE gives a fuck about them. Elderly people really don’t want anything to do with them so what are they supposed to think. I do place blame on the generation before me because a lot of them looked down on us and we got treated fucked up because they got treated that way as kids growing up. We grew up with hiphop and we were looked down upon because of it. Treated as a generation lost, so in return we passed that same mentality down on the next generation.

Shit is what it is. You always gonna have knuckleheads, whether they are 20 or 40.

but am I walking the streets every day scared of youngins? hell nah.

But I keep my head on a swivel and pay attention to my surroundings as a general practice.

At the end of the day, if you cool, other people will be too.

Yeah you do, but it is an overwhelming on older cats being scared as hell of these cats in their mid 20’s and younger. So of these cats need a little love and attention in my opinion.

at least in my experience...when you approach with a little warmth, they always respond in kind. It helps that I don't look even remotely slammable, lol. Plus, I look a lot younger than I am, so they don't immediately know what box to try and put me in. Is he an OG? Is he one of us?

when we were youngsters, did we talk to any old head that wasn't related or came up with?

I would've thought it weird AF if some random 40 year old wanted to talk to me when I was 20 and I didn't know dude

We had our thing when we were 20 (hip hop, raves, graf, blunts, whatever) and if you weren't of the same age group you were excluded

Every generation has thought the kids were the worst:

"This is a new breed, the end of the world, it ain't like it used to be, get off my lawn"

Every single generation has said that, it's our turn now

I think that cats in their 20’s when we were that was more open to talking to other older folks. If they weren’t;t on any bullshit then we mingled and went about our way.

Yes it’s our turn now, but I see that same mistake that the previous generation made by distancing themselves from us. Instead of embracing this younger cats we are shunning them.

are you saying scared to engage with young people in an attempt to connect with them or school them?

do you mean scared that the future depends on them and that's a scary thought?

A lot of us 40 and above didn't have fathers in the home, but there was still a code.

I beg to differ... most of the cats I knew growing up had a father in the home. Things were starting to make a shift in our community in the 80’s especially when crack hit the scene. Even the few that didn’t have a father in the home were with their grandparents, and yes things were still taught on a fundamental level. Our generation has face to teach these youth what these fundamentals are.

as told to me by a frat brother (I forget which) in riverside, who owns a business, when I approached him about tryna get some grassroots community-type shxt started.

but like as stated it depends on the setting. there WERE some pockets of Moreno Valley that were 'lit'.

I usedta cut the kids hair that lived down the street from me and try to talk to them, but they're home environment was overwhelmingly negative, so my good was outweighed by the bad they were marinating in most of the time.

it takes a village and alladat.

Yeah the home structure has definitely gone down the drain, but why is that. A lot of men didn’t even try to make it with the woman that we had kids with. Most of us were out before the baby came. They are negative because the man that was supposed to be their father never became that.

I felt like he was just scary. I feel like a banged-out kid is not gon show up. the ones who wanted an option would shoot thru to talk. I didn't have a plan, just a thought be yeah...he was like 'ffffk THAT'

They momma couldn't let 'that shxt' go. some people don't wanna be "woke". She appreciated the time I spent with them but I could tell she had no idea that her whole get-down was counterproductive.

some people feel like you stuntin on em when you tryna just SHARE WHAT YOUVE LEARNED. *sigh*

that the greater society is experiencing a period of absolute chaos and instability.....I don't think the youth are much different in my city. Murder rates and gang violence are down from 1997 in Toronto.

One positive note is fashion. Compared to when we were 20...the fashionable uniform being baggy, baggy clothing. That trend wasn't good....it separated and identified at-risk youth from their peers in a way that was very self-defeating. The new fashion doesn't do that. You can't identify those at-risk by how they dress to the same degree and that's probably a good thing for those that need guidance or direction outta trouble.

I also perceive a decrease in machismo in youth culture compared to my teen years.

I'm open to talking/engaging with everyone, especially young folks. I think sometimes age brings on conservatism and fears. pull up your pants type thinking. makes folks disengage on sight.

Y'all buy those labels, I was born supreme

In response to Reply # 0

Like... I'm not scared of snakes. I know people that can't be around them, touch them, or even see them on TV. I've held snakes, and been around them, but I remain cautious.

I grew up in Gary, Indiana, and that shit was savage since the 70's. So, I have the same healthy fear of young hood dudes I've always had, when it comes to potential street violence.

However, I feel like a grumpy old man when I say this, but I find most millennial dudes to be soft. Even the hard ones are soft. Many of them are more reckless, disrespectful, violent...etc., than ever before, yet somehow still soft as hell with their sense of entitlement and unwillingness to struggle.

This too...

The hate towards them is strong. My generation had hate towards us, but not like what these youngsters face today.
