"Shake Shack is testing out robots "

http://nypost.com/2017/10/02/robots-are-replacing-fast-food-workers-at-new-shake-shack/

It’s the future of fast food bytes in the Big Apple.

Robots will replace humans and cash won’t be accepted at a soon-to-open Shake Shack in the East Village, reps for the popular burger chain said Monday.

Customers will place orders via an app and at touch-screen kiosks inside the restaurant, which is scheduled to open an Astor Place branch later this month, according to company CEO Randy Garutti.

Workers dubbed “hospitality champs” will guide diners through possible tech glitches as they place orders at the kiosks, which only accept credit cards.

Diners can also pay on smartphones and tablets using the restaurant’s app.

“The Astor Place Shack will be a playground where we can test and learn the ever-shifting needs of our guests,” Garutti said. “ represents our dedication to innovation and to providing the best for our guests and for our teams.”

Buzzers at the burger joint, which was founded by famed restaurateur Danny Meyer, will be replaced by text messages to alert diners when their food is ready.

The new notification model allows customers to roam outside the restaurant while waiting for their burgers, fries and shakes. When their order is ready, they pick it up at a counter.

The chain plans to use the Astor Place branch as a testing ground for the cashless kiosk model, which eliminates the job of cashier. It also gets rid of its traditional order placing area.

Staff at the new restaurant will be paid a minimum of $15 an hour in order to attract the best workers — at a time when areas such as New York, California and DC are transitioning to that as a minimum wage, Garutti said.

In the future, the chain also plans to offer high-speed delivery and innovative packaging, he said.

“We’re excited to lead with kiosk-only ordering, putting control of the Shake Shack experience in our guests’ hands, and an optimized kitchen with increased capacity for mobile orders and eventual delivery integration to support ongoing digital innovation,” Garutti said.

The new Shake Shack will have dining rooms and waiting areas similar to other New York City branches.

Shake Shack isn’t the only restaurant chain that has recently gone cashless.

Sweetgreen, a fast-casual salad chain with locations in Manhattan, stopped accepting cash earlier this year.

you want $15 an hour? Sure thing. But instead of hiring 12 people I will hire 3 and let these bots flip these burgers.

Nothing special except their burgers are the perfect balance of griddle crispness, they use a quality blend of beef from Pat LaFrieda, and they are all served on a Martin's potato bun.
Probably easier to replicate the taste at home--more than any other fast food chain.
And the fries are just standard crinkle cut fries, but the cheese sauce stands out because it's probably Cheese Whiz--except with an equal amount of real American cheese blended in.

We are *years* from a fully automated robot that has the ability to do something as complex and dexterous as making burgers.

So yes, you might be losing a cashier or two. But if the company is forward thinking, they replace those jobs with other jobs...they mentioned incorporating delivery so that could generate two or three jobs. The company could focus on customer service like having more busboys or cooks or hosts. Maybe they invest in owning more of their supply lines, generating even more jobs.

Innovation and increased productivity aren't an excuse for losing jobs, and shouldn't be treated as such. (Edit - at least not in this case)

you aren't going to have a ton of $15 burger flippers and workers in fast food if you can use automation and get a consistent product.

Hell, I see yogurt spots now where people pay top dollar to make their own yogurt and put on their own toppings.

So if I'm opening a spot or have a McDowells and they tell me it's $15 an hour minimum I'm going to go from 15 workers to 8 if I can get the same product out the door.

It's great for those 8 people but hell for the other 7.

14. "naww innovation has nothing to do with putting people out of jobs"
In response to Reply # 10

I think one of my big issues with the way people frame this issue is somehow people asking for better working conditions is causing the owners to incorporate new technologies that will eventually lead to the outsourcing of their jobs to robots.

The innovation is going to happen no matter whats going on, how we respond to it is the question. I'm not denying at all that at some point cashiers will be replaced by kiosks. In places all over the country the change over is taking place. What I'm saying is when you eliminate one job, or even a set of jobs, there's no reason to adapt your workforce to other jobs in house that will help keep your customer base happy.

So I go to a Mcdonalds, and there's no cashier, but now the place is cleaner because you now have more people cleaning the restuarant instead of counting change. You have more types of food because your cooks can focus on an expanded menu instead of being pulled to ring. The drive thru line is quicker because you have more people putting the orders together instead of cashiering.

Instead what we are on pace to have is even less customer service with the advent of these robotic transactions. More money in the hands of the shareholders and less money going towards the immediate community which I will always always always rail against.

There's room for change and innovation, but there is also room to take care of employers and I refuse to believe otherwise.

Or customer facing industries. Nobody is arguing that manufacturing is coming back. (although with manufacturing being increasingly automated, and fuel at some point going back up again, there's arguments to be made about bringing it back to the States) (that's a whole 'nother conversation tho)

And the fact that financial incentives must exist for the adaptations you suggest to be viable.

Corporations are designed (or in some cases, mandated) to maximize profit wherever possible. It could be short-term, it could be long-term. But it's always the end goal. It's baked into the systemic DNA of this country.

So while - in theory - innovation does not and should not have to result in higher unemployment and other unsavory outcomes, it's very likely that it will because in America.. corporate interests are protected (valued?) more than civil interests.

Sounds extra but it's true. I mean look at what was going on in the health sector:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/aetna-obamacare-pullout-humana-merger_us_57b3d747e4b04ff883996a13

The most unlikely/unsustainable solution to any problem is the one where Corporations stand to take a major hit in profits. They give zero fucks. And fight ruthlessly.
