More than 20 dead after shooting on Las Vegas Strip

(CNN)More than 20 people were killed and more than 100 injured in a shooting on the Las Vegas Strip Sunday night police said.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters that police responded after reports of shots being fired from the Mandalay Bay towards the Route 91 Harvest festival.

"We determined there was a shooter on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay," Lombardo said. Officers engaged the suspect, whom Lombardo described as a "local resident." He said that the shooter is dead and that police believe that there are no other shooters. "Right now we believe it's a sole actor, a lone-wolf-type actor," said Lombardo.

Police have identified the gunman but will not be naming him at this time, Lombardo said. Though it's too early to give an accurate estimate of the number of dead and wounded, Lombardo said that "20-plus" have died and "in excess of 100" people have been injured.
Police are searching for a woman named Marilou Danley who was traveling with the suspect, Lombardo said. He described Danley as an Asian woman, 4 ft 11 inches tall and 111 pounds. "We have not located her at this time and we are interested in talking to her," he said.

Two Las Vegas police officers are being treated at a local hospital for injuries they sustained during the shooting, Lombardo said. One is in critical condition and the other sustained minor injuries.
In addition, the sheriff stated that there were off duty officers attending the concert who may have died. The identities of the officers involved have not been released.
"Pray for Las Vegas," the city's mayor tweeted. "Thank you to all our first responders out there now."

Concertgoers describe shooting

CNN spoke to three people who were attending the concert at the Las Vegas Village outdoor arena when gunfire broke out, causing them to flee. They described hearing the sound of gunfire while Jason Aldean was performing.

Aldean, his wife Brittany, his band and crew were able to get offstage safely and unharmed.

"We were close to the stages -- about six rows from the front on the left hand side and he was just performing," Rachel Dekerf said.
"People went down on the Mandalay side of the stage," Joe Pitzel said. "I don't know if people were ducking or if people were hit."
Derkef filmed her escape from the venue using her cell phone, starting just after the first shots were fired.
She described ongoing gunfire, and played out the video she had recorded during which more than five minutes of gunfire were intermittently audible.

"The gunshots lasted for 10-15 minutes. It didn't stop," she said. "We just ran for our lives."

'Go, go, go, go'
Derkef's sister, Monique Dumas, said that everyone instantly crouched when they heard the shots.
"The band was rushed off the stage, the floodlights came on the crowd, and you see on the right hand of the stage the person who was injured, so they're calling for medics, calling for security, then there was gunfire again," Dumas said.

"It seemed there was a pause in the gunfire and the people in the yellow shirts were telling the people to 'go, go, go, go' ... the gunfire never ended, it seemed like it went on and on and on," she said.

SiriusXM Country radio host Storme Warren was on the side of the stage as Aldean was performing and shots rang out.
"I thought it was fireworks going off and maybe it mistriggered, and then it happened again. And when it happened the third time, we knew something was wrong," Warren said. "To say that I saw things I never want to see again is the truth, and it's a scary situation."
Warren said he heard "more than 50 shots fired and probably in the hundreds."

"The shells were hitting the deck of the stage when I was on it," he said, adding that he could still hear the shells as he went under the stage for protection.

A concertgoer told CNN affiliate KLAS that everybody was lying on top of each other trying to get out of the shooter's way.
"Everybody's hiding everywhere, they're hiding under the bleachers and the stanchions, anywhere they could and everyone is telling us to 'run, run as fast as you can,'" she told the news station. "And my husband and I ran out toward our car and there were people hiding underneath my car for cover and there was a gentleman who was shot and he said, 'can you help me?' and so I put him in my car and I had like six people in my car, people without shoes, running, just to get away."
'Sounded like firecrackers'
Eyewitness Bryan Heifner spoke to CNN from a room in a hotel across from the Mandalay Bay, which he said he could see from his window.
"Mostly I heard the shots, just so many shots -- I just thought it was a semi braking with the air brakes, but then I went downstairs and saw people running and looking for family," he said.
"I immediately went back to my room, locked the door, turned the lights off."

Another witness told CNN affiliate KSNV that the shooting sounded like firecrackers at first.

"It didn't sound normal, it sounded like machine guns and it was like several rounds, it was like hundreds of rounds," she told the news station.

"My boyfriend had me move behind a building here because it just didn't sound right," she told KSNV. "And then we hid behind a building and we could just hear hundreds of rounds going off and then about 10 minutes later the police came and just blocked off all the streets."
She said she was about a block from the Route 91 Harvest festival.
Facebook has set up a crisis response page to help people establish whether their loved ones are safe.

Even a Glock can be converted to fire in full auto. It's not any more difficult that tinkering with a car engine or lawnmower.

No disenfranchised youth listening to Marilyn Manson or that rap music, or playing call of duty.

Not a mooslim.

Maybe we can find something anti-christian, but a 64 year old baby boomer doubt it.

Considering its a country show its gonna be mostly white on white violence.

Even the whole 'All it takes is a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun' ain't gonna stop a dude sniping down at you from 32 floors up.

Right now, this is looking like its clearly one of 'their' own.

I promptly walked my ass around this morning reminding everyone that the shooter was an old ass white dude.

Quiet. As. Fuck.

oh, and I also wish someone resembling Action Jackson (Carl Weathers) would have been the one to take him down. The irony.

You should never let fear get you to the point that you're scared to leave your house.

Shit could happen to you while you're in the house that wouldn't have happened if you had left out for a little.

My heart goes out to the victims and their families.

How many of these people at this event were the same ones saying the people in that club in Florida deserved it because god doesn't like sinning?

How many of these people spread the alt right and Republican endorsed slander of President Obama for showing empathy towards the victims?

How many of these people joined the conservative rallying cry about fictitious gun control legislation designed to prevent shootings like this?

What music was he listening to because that genre gets the blame.
What political party was he affiliated with because that political party gets the blame.
Who did he vote for President because that candidate gets the blame.

Don't try to deflect to mental health issues or make this a case about ISIS, or muslims, or anything else. We need to talk about why these white people keep terrorizing the rest of America. Fuck their rationale because everyone else gets hit with blanket boilerplate talking points aimed at further disenfranchising their communities and tarnishing any goals they hope to achieve.

The white community has to address their issues. Every time I look up some white male takes out their Call of Duty arsenal and kills people on some shooting rampage. These trends continue to happen as people dismiss it as mental health or lone wolf.

This could go down as Trump's best response to anything thus far as he displays empathy on par with what someone in President Obama's former office should respond with.

Excuse me for being petty but I'm damn tired of these white people terrorizing everyone.

such a wild swing of emotions for me watching that dude's video of the attack. Starts with him jogging past a woman who was just shot in the face and her "brains are hanging out" then ends with him in his truck or whatever saying "got a gun, heading back in, dumb ass me didn't bring a gun" or whatever.

Man, I can't process that.

there's a fine line to be walked there.

i guess it depends on what they want.

the more the talking heads on CNN attack him the more it helps him w/his base. b/c that's a key part of his platform. he ran on that. he won on that - in part.

but praising him a little kinda deflates that bullshit.

then again...it riles up CNN's viewers. well, no b/c CNN wants to be centrist.

i dunno.

i'm disappointed that it's so clear the dude responds to cable news. like, Fox News can actually steer POTUS. Fox didn't cover PR or Hurricane Maria very much while the storm was raging. so POTUS didn't know about it. nevermind that POTUS has a staff that's supposed to keep him abreast of this shit...he gets his info from Fox News. and the other cable news channels to a lesser extent.

which means...they have an incre

naw, fuck that.

it's fucked up that POTUS relies on cable news for info. and reacts to it. which drives cable news coverage also. a totally sick cycle.

nevermind. back to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgIgKcqPd4k

fuck you.

I hate when Trump says stuff like 'scripture teaches us...'. He's not about that church life, so the phoniness of it is so obvious.

I don't think he made some sudden transformation in to a competent leader or anything, though. Dude read some cue cards and stayed on script.

I can't think of any president in my lifetime in which their statements were evaluated on "presidential-ness".

The tone of statements is often critiqued or the message itself. But for Trump, CNN sets the bar at "Does it sound like something a president might say?"

To praise him every time he reads the words his staff puts in front of him and doesn't get sidetracked is evidence that our standards are almost at rock bottom. We've been inoculated.

Dumb dumb dumb

like they are generally slow to release any kind of information except they are usually quick to announce that it was a "lone gunman", how are they so sure?

Are they just trying to ease people's fears? Is it a ruse to lure their accomplices out?

Looking at the pics of Mandalay Bay I see TWO windows busted out. Did he start shooting from one window then moved to get a better angle?

Unless there's a gun show going on how does somebody get 10 "long rifles" into a hotel room and nobody notices or thinks its suspicious?

I got a lot of questions....

Im sure with the sophisticated security software they were able to go back and track his movements from when he entered the hotel and see if he ever was with anyone else.

>Unless there's a gun show going on how does somebody get 10

you dont have to bring them all in at once. I mean that would be insanely heavy and obvious. But with all the constant conventions going on in Vegas. Making multiple trips to your car is not out of the ordinary.

What's unbelievable about that? Is it too hard to shoot out the windows? Or is it just weird that he would relocate?

This one is easy. Ain't no one paying attention to what you are bringing up to your room. I doubt he was carrying them out in the open. Probably in cases. Pretty discreet.

Including Mandalay Bay, they have never stopped me to inspect my bags. I have brought plenty of liquor, beer, wine up to my room in a soft roller cooler with no issues.

As far as two windows, I believe each room has two windows so it isn’t surprising that he would have broken two windows out.

Plus if he stayed at Delano, which is a tower owned by Mandalay and right next to Mandalay and looks just like a Mandalay Tower. Those rooms are all suites with a separate bedroom and living room divided by a wall. If he was staying at the Delano tower he probably would have had to break both windows out.

And I’m pretty sure none of those 35 times you were carrying luggage big enough to hold 20 AR-15’s.

A 60+ year old dude humped 20 rifles to his room by himself? Did he tip the the bellboy a hundo and say he was a collector?

I’m sure some heads are going to roll for that security and surveillance team at Mandalay Bay.

If he had a rifle bag or any other big duffel bag to conceal his guns he could have easily brought in 10-20 rifles without anyone noticing or saying anything.

Especially in a casino as busy as Mandalay.

my nephew who is a competitive shooter. He'll bring as many as 15 rifles to the range for one session, and with them broken down and in cases and/or bags, the two of us will carry all in at the same time, and you would have no idea looking at those bags what was in them.

That's no stretch at all for someone checking into a hotel in Vegas to have that much in bags/cases.

Being an older white male accountant with decent wealth, all signs point to him more than likely being a republican.

64 years old, reports are he was relatively well off, no children, had a younger girlfriend, reports are he wasn’t political or religious.

Maybe he was hiding some financial issues due to his heavily gambling and had a bunch of gambling debts?

But that's because he's a 64-year old white man.

If he was 21 and Black he'd just be a murderous thug. And if he had a vaguely Arabic name he'd be a terrorist.

if there are repercussions from this, it will be for EVERYBODY (and people who aren't white men will bear most of the burden).

there won't be profiling or lists of banned countries. there aren't about to be screenings for accountants or sun belt retirees.

Is this really a thing? For fuck's sake. Nobody has found ties to the shooter and any terrorist group, and he was even found to be not politically active. And as a counterpoint, mass shootings like Fort Hood have been deemed not terrorism because they couldn't find direct links between them and terrorist groups, even when the guy is a proven radicalized Muslim and shouted allah u akbar during the attack. So if this Vox article really represents a thing, then I'm peacing the entire fuck out of this bullshit conversation. Have fun

Even by the discussion presented in that article (I skimmed - it was thoughtful and informative), there are no criteria for this mass murder being labeled terrorism.

Language and its meanings are fluid and malleable.

That's why and how slang exists and its usages spread and morph.

There is a legal definition of terrorism but the public consciousness isn't beholden to that.

These people, and all of us have been terrorized by this attack. Folks at outdoor concerts now and forever will think about this before and/or during their attendance. Some may never go to another one...etc

If only I'd had a gun when that guy was shooting at me from 32 stories up, I could've saved everyone! I definitely wouldn't have missed, no scope 360 headshots all day!

Who say God is punishing people that do as it's written i.e. that they obey the law of the land by peacefully protesting something that is truly evil e.g. The murder of unarmed men and women and the aquitall of their murderers in so called courts of law. That is what this would be judgement against if anything.

What a devil and a snake that man is. False prophet to the nth degree.

Las Vegas shooter booked rooms facing Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago in August

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/10/05/las-vegas-shooter-had-booked-room-augchicago-augumay-have-had-help-but-investigators-have-no-idea-wh/734824001/

Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock booked rooms in a Chicago hotel facing the Lollapalooza music festival in August, a law enforcement official told USA TODAY on Thursday.

Paddock, 64, booked one room at the Blackstone Hotel starting Aug. 1, two days before the festival opened. He booked a second room Aug. 3. The Blackstone confirmed in a statement that rooms were booked in Paddock's name during Lollapalooza but that he did not stay there on those dates.

Both rooms had a checkout date of Aug. 6, corresponding with the final day of the music festival that drew tens of thousands of concertgoers to Grant Park alongside Lake Michigan. It was unclear if Paddock was in Chicago during the festival, according to the law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

The lineup for the festival included artists Lorde, Chance the Rapper and Arcade Fire. Among the attendees at the festival was former President Obama’s daughter, Malia. Some 100,000 people turned out each day for the event, according to local media.

“We are aware of the media reports and have been in communication with our federal partners,” the Chicago Police Department said in a statement. “As you saw earlier this week the city conducts extensive public safety planning and training around major events, in close coordination with our law enforcement partners, to ensure public safety."

In addition to Paddock’s bookings in Chicago, a federal law enforcement official says the gunman also expressed interest in Boston in the past several months, prompting authorities to notify local authorities there.

The official, who was not authorized to comment publicly, said Thursday that information referencing other locations is being drawn from investigators’ continuing analysis of Paddock’s communications devices.

Although investigators believe the digital and physical trail Paddock has left in his wake is crucial to resolving his motive for the attack, the official cautioned that the information recovered — including his interests in locations beyond Las Vegas — have so far not led authorities to any firm conclusions.

Investigators looking into Paddock's background and his movements before his killing spree erupted in Las Vegas say he must have had some help along the way given his huge arsenal and precise plans, but they have no idea who that might be.

While Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo suggested that Paddock may have had a plan of escape following his assault, the federal official said the gunman had limited options, even though he had rigged surveillance cameras to monitor the outside hallway of his hotel room.

By the time heavily armed Paddock, dug in on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay, would have been alerted to trouble outside, the official said the gunman would have been boxed in.

Investigators believe Paddock was the sole gunman, but authorities are actively attempting to determine if others provided assistance, either wittingly or unwittingly.

“You have to make the assumption that he had some help at some point,” Lombardo said.

Tracking his recent movements, investigators are examining surveillance cameras at gun stores, restaurants and hotels to determine if others accompanied him.

Paddock's girlfriend, Marilou Danley, 62, said in a statement that she had no idea what he was planning or why.

Danley, who was in the Philippines when the shooting occurred, flew back to the United States and is cooperating with authorities.

“He never said anything to me or took any action that I was aware of that I understood in any way to be a warning that something horrible like this was going to happen,” Danley said in a statement read by her lawyer outside FBI headquarters in Los Angeles.

More: Stephen Paddock was 'upbeat, happy' as he bought guns

Paddock lived a low-key, private life, including spending hours playing highstakes video poker in Las Vegas casinos. He was such a steady customer that hotels gave him free rooms, including one on the 32-second floor of the Mandalay Bay casino overlooking a country music festival.

The wealthy real estate investor opened fire Sunday from his multistory perch onto the crowd below, killing 58 people and injuring nearly 500. He then shot and killed himself as police tried to break into the room.

Investigators trying to determine what triggered the massacre say Paddock's plans were meticulous.

Las Vegas authorities confirmed Wednesday that Paddock had rented a room at Las Vegas’ Ogden hotel the week prior, during Life is Beautiful, a three-day music and arts festival. Investigators haven’t determined whether Paddock was considering targeting the festival, said Lombardo. Investigators were expected to review footage from cameras at the Ogden during his stay to see if they could glean any clues, Lombardo said.

Paddock also amassed a huge arsenal of weapons and explosives, and set up surveillance equipment outside his room to detect any approaching outsiders, including police.

Investigators say he also had a plan to survive the shooting and try to escape, though would not say how.

Even the No. 2 official in the FBI said Wednesday he was surprised investigators have not uncovered more about why a man with no obvious criminal record would cause so much bloodshed.

“There’s all kinds of things that surprise us in each one of these events. That’s the one in this one, and we are not there yet,” FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe said. “We have a lot of work to do.”

“This individual and this attack didn’t leave the sort of immediately accessible thumbprints that you find on some mass casualty attacks,” McCabe said. “Putting aside the somewhat dubious claims of responsibility that we see in each one of these instances, we look for actual indicators of affiliation, of motive, of intent, and so far we’re not there. We don’t have those sort of indicators.”

Investigators analyzing Paddock’s computer, cellphone and other electronic devices have found no obvious ideological motive, no clear connection to extremists or activist groups or outward display of mental illness.

Paddock wired $100,000 to the Philippines before the shooting, a federal law enforcement official, who was not authorized to comment publicly, told USA TODAY.

Danley, who was overseas for more than two weeks, said she was initially pleased when she was wired money from Paddock to buy a house for her family in the Philippines. But she later feared it was a way to break up with her.

She said she loved Paddock as a “kind, caring, quiet man” and hoped they would have a future together. Danley added she was devastated by the carnage and would cooperate with authorities as they struggle to get inside Paddock’s mind.

How do we encourage media to cooperate?

I actually just took notice of this a few minutes ago. A group of victim relatives from previous shootings started a lobby group called 'No Notoriety' and it's catching on.

https://nonotoriety.com/anderson-cooper-of-cnn-accepts-the-challenge/

So the entire hour of Anderson Cooper tonight used no pictures and did not state the LV shooter's name. Only euphemisms were used....'the shooter'...'the perpetrator'...etc. No pics....no names.

It's a good first step. And Anderson's use of it shows how easy it is to do. It really doesn't effect the coverage at all. As the petition states....there's really nothing to lose in simply omitting the name and his picture. An argument could be made that Cooper isn't going far enough in order to be effective (ie he's still reporting ABOUT the shooter).....but this is a really good first step imo. It opens up more issues because the shooter's race or gender or nationality etc etc might be relevant to the story. Those things can be said without pictures and names.

Someone talking about him without saying his name was not his motivation. It was all about his NAME going down in history. He even specifically said something to the effect of 'when people hear the name Elliot Rodgers they will rightfully tremble just thinking of my god-like power'.

And the petition is correct about what's been changed in Canada. That alt-right asshole who shot up a mosque in Quebec a few months ago....I don't know his name and I asked my SO and the teens....noone can recall what his name was or what he looked like but we all remembered how many victims there were. Everyone knows who Dylan Roof was and what he looks like. There's nothing gained in that.

I certainly don't think this theory can be uniformly applied. There's a chance this stuff wasn't a factor in LV. But if you look at the Elliot Rodger case (ya I know I'm naming him) then this evo psych theory has to be considered the primary motivation.

i think anyone who feels strongly enough about "the media" perpetuating violence like this already should be working full time on gun control, social safety nets, and mental health.

those things get people killed every day and could have made a difference in many of these mass shootings too.

What I meant was that I don't think it will be uniformly relevant. Meaning....it's more relevant in some cases than others. Some mass killers are motivated by fame and some might not be. But following the policy in ALL cases has no pragmatic cost.

I should have made an effort to refer to Rodgers without saying his name. I'm a gun-control advocate. This isn't a matter of distributing our energy. We can do both.

Is there a specific argument AGAINST the policy suggested by the petition? If not...what's the problem? I mean...even if we think it might not be very effective....Why not STILL do it for any positive effect it might have? What's the downside?

No pictures, no names.

In response to Reply # 189
Thu Oct-05-17 11:01 PM by denny

Social status is a HUGE part of the psychological profile of mass killers. I don't agree with your statement because it oversimplifies the issue. A typical mass killer has several overlapping motivations so we can't rule out the role that status/fame/attention plays in their individual narratives completely. It might be 90% in some, 5% in others, 0% in others. In those cases where status motivation is 0% of their motivation...the policy is STILL relevant because of the potential mass killers watching the coverage for whom it's NOT 0%. The whole notion of a 'copy-cat' killer is based on status and recognition.

But none of that addresses the point that it's a no-lose game we are playing in adopting this policy. It has no cost yet has potential benefits (even if we agree that the benefits MIGHT be minimal which many psychology professors seem to disagree with).

In other words...you need to show why this policy may have a negative effect or absolutely NO effect in order to counter it. Anything else is noise. Noone's suggesting this is the final solution to mass killers. It doesn't have to be for us to adopt it.

It's not 'my plan'. It's a plan that was suggested by the petition I posted above and a plan that some victims who have lost loved ones in mass shooter scenarios are working hard to advocate for:

https://nonotoriety.com/

Don't say 'ISIS'? I'm honestly trying to give you the benefit of the doubt here and I guess you're saying that American media is responsible for stirring hatred against muslim people. We can have that debate. If you ever want to inbox me I will dialogue with you til the cows come home. If you think I'm contributing to an internet culture war I am open to discussing all that. There is a huge idealogical war happening in western academics between critical theorists intent on deconstructing western society and those embracing the traditional western values of the enlightenment. I'm DYING to talk to people about it. You're not RJCC....I value what you have to say. I don't see how it's relevant in this thread...but am open to hear why you think it is.

I guess I kinda understand that you are saying it's hypocritical for me to support this 'no notoriety' policy in relation to my views about other issues?

But you're being stubborn as hell in addressing this issue without reference to me or other issues. Do you support the 'no notoriety' agenda (and the petition I posted) or not?

In anycase...I did some work in curating a list of articles from the past few months to solidify the traditional liberal position that we were discussing in another thread so I'll make that post tonight where we can go for each other's heads. I just don't see how that stuff's relevant here.

no notoriety is at best a tertiary solution to this problem. i'd happy to adopt it as long as i was sure that it was part of a strategy that was acknowledging and addressing the many proven sources of violence in this country. in the absence of that work, it's fair to consider no notoriety a distraction and a roadblock to real change.

no notoriety is part of the solution to other problems, or at least something that would keep those problems from becoming worse. i'd expect anyone who thought long and hard about mass killers would be a vocal advocate of applying the same strategies to irresponsible campaigning and coverage.

the reason people don't connect those dots is because it's okay in this country to consider white christian men as fundamentally reasonable (but vulnerable to corrupting memes) but people of other ethnicities and religions already fundamentally corrupted.

in both cases, there are structural issues that lead to violence, but our biases about the communities that produced the "evil" can lead us into these silly games where we overstate or understate the role of media.

ok well to call it a distraction doesn't make any sense and to call it a roadblock borders on ridiculous. If the NRA attempted to use the no notoriety campaign as a tool to distract people from gun-control issues I would stand with you in that this policy is not an alternate solution to the greater problem.

>no notoriety is part of the solution to other problems, or at
>least something that would keep those problems from becoming
>worse. i'd expect anyone who thought long and hard about mass

I hope I'm understanding you correctly in that you're saying (for example) Obama's decision to not use the term 'radical islamist terror' is based on a similar principle behind the no notoriety concept. I supported Obama's policy to avoid that term because it was a pragmatic decision. A brief assertion here....There was no diplomatic cost in NOT using those words and there was a clear benefit in de-escalating hatred and suspicion of America in certain Muslim populations. However, I don't think that issue is related to the policy of no notoriety in any way. Obama's policy was an act of international diplomacy....the no notoriety policy is based on lessening the psychological motivation of mentally ill individuals. I concede that there may be some idealogical usefulness in the process of differentiating those two issues. Even writing about it now...I can see how there's more to explore in this comparison (assuming that was what you meant).

>the reason people don't connect those dots is because it's

>but people of other ethnicities and religions already
>fundamentally corrupted.

I acknowledge that we have coded language in differentiating mass killing scenarios by motivation and context that should be flushed out. But I don't subscribe to the argument (which you haven't explicitly made) that these codes are exclusively based on a white supremacist or racist worldview. There certainly IS a difference between a mass killer with no clear political agenda and one who is motivated by an identifiable cause or idealogy or religion or belief system. If it helps to alleviate any suspicion of racial prejudice....I would include the Oklahoma bombing in the same category as the 911 attacks. Both cases being a mass killing based on an identifiable agenda. There is good reason for us to make this distinction. I think it's safe to say that the no notoriety policy has more potential benefit in cases wherein there is no identifiable idealogical or political motivation. However, I'd also assert (for now...I'm kinda thinking aloud here) that a no notoriety policy is probably prudent to employ even for those scenarios where an identifiable motivation is present. Interested to know what you think about this (or if there's any analysis available regarding this)...but it seems to me that status and fame will tend to be more prominent in the motivations of random killers than in those that have an explicit agenda.

But the no notoriety principles apply to both on first glance. It's relevant that the Oklahoma bomber was white, that he was anti-government, that he was far-right and a conspiracy theorist. His name and picture aren't relevant. It's relevant that the 911 attackers were Saudi, were Muslim fundamentalists, believed they were acting out a jihad. Their names and pictures aren't relevant. As the petition states....the names and/or pictures of mass killers are only relevant in very specific circumstances. (suspects still at large, identities unknown, etc)

>in both cases, there are structural issues that lead to
>violence, but our biases about the communities that produced
>the "evil" can lead us into these silly games where we
>overstate or understate the role of media.

I'm sure we could have a lively debate about bias as it pertains to mass killings or terrorist acts but I don't see the relevance of that to the topic at hand. No notoriety is not advocating for us to omit religious beliefs or race or gender or anything else. It's very specifically centered on 'no pictures, no names'. Apologies if I'm wrong here...but I get the sense you are beating around the bush in asserting that 'no notoriety' would be applied selectively. IE for white people but not muslims (or something to that effect?) I think this assertion can only be made if you are projecting onto the policy more than it consists of. 'no pictures, no names'.

I've been pretty much ignoring the slow drip drips of info from this story. But this one made me furrow my brow.

They initially thought the guard was shot after about 10mins of shooting.

How the he'll does someone, a security guard at that, get shot in a Vegas hotel hallway and there's not an immediate responses

you would think there would be an immediate, huge response from security and law enforcement personnel in the facility. This was BEFORE Paddock starting shooting out the window.

6 minutes isn't that long when you add in elevator time. I also heard he blocked all stairwell entrances which seems odd as fuck.

Shit smells funky tho...

also peeped a photo that showed his 13 neck tattoo but it wasn't there in the photo after he died. maybe it was hidden by clothing but ionno.

warning, extremely graphic:

everybody says "what a shame...we need to do something about this"

on one side: "we need better gun control, lets lock this shit down"

on another side: "well you know, you know, you know in in in Australia they got rid of all the guns and shootings went down!"

on another side: "hell nawl you cant take shit! THATS HOW the goverment is gunna git us! We need to be armed"

on another side: "whats gun control gonna do? this guy was an upstanding citizen. guns don't kill people..."

on another side: "you don't live in the country where it takes the police a good 45 minutes to an hour to get to us...we have guns for protection. it is a way of life"

on a crazy as fuck side: "false flag operation"

its going to keep happening again and again and again and again and again and again and again
