"Who Said Kingdom Come was not a good album?"

Listening to it again....

I have to say it is pretty good...

there is a stretch of the album that includes Kingdom Come, show me what you got, Lost ones, Do you Wanna ride could have been mixed better... and there is a couple of loose joints on here that are really good. And Jay was sayin some real ish on here...

I just think the hate was too strong when this came out.

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Show Me What Ya Got had everyone hype here. The other songs were okay too. 30 Something, Lost one, Beach Chair etc. Dont know why its become dismissed the last ten years or so. People are so damn fickle I guess.

Particularly since he had just "retired" in 2003 dropped an album in 2004 with R Kelly, did Dear Summer in 2005, did Deja Vu in 2006 and dropped an album the same year.

He left off with the Black Album which was "I'm tired of rap, I'm a grown up, I wear adult clothes and I'm the best" to come back in 2006 with "Adulting is hard not so glamorous so let me tell you about it"

Then he followed that up with a solid American Gangster album, which made Kingdom Come even more of a filler album.

The album's best songs are the serious, more introspective songs. Beach Chair, for example, was an indicator of where Jay could go with an album should he decide to shrug off needing the radio-friendly songs. I wish the whole album was built off of songs like Beach Chair, Minority Report, and Lost Ones....but it wasn't.

That being said, Kingdom Come is not as godawful as some people made it out to be (internet always be the official sponsor of hyperbole). The album was okay...definitely not as bad as Magna Carta or even BP3.

Like someone already said, Kingdom Come is like an undercooked version of 4:44.

Rob Viktum did a cool album as well called AmericanDONUTshop where he used the sample sources from Donuts to make original beats, it had a slick feel to it. And it's the definitive version of "Pray" in my opinion, swaps the drama for nostalgia and works a lot better.

The rest of it is CEO Hov abusing the marketing budget making subpar music. Maybe half of it is good if you really scrape to find those songs but it's awful compared to the rest of his catalog.

But for Jay? It wasn’t that good. And for that year...it wasn’t that good.

If I was making a best of Jay or a best of 2006, Lost Ones is the only joint I’m considering.

The source material makes for a great beat that'll get the crowd hype, but trying to craft a quality song over it is almost impossible.

Maybe I can do Do You Wanna Ride and Beach Chair. Other than that I'm good fam. I don't even play the album version of Lost Ones, the bootleg version is better to me.
