"Netflix now auto-playing the first trailer - with sound?"
WTF is this about, first it's "recommends" something to me (because Netflix paid for it - not because i might like it) and then it starts to play it with sound?
Like I need to hear that bullshit - and many times the volume is high from the last time I turned off the TV.
And stop putting that bullshit Netflix logo and loud ass bonks at the beginning of every show - why is that so loud??
TLDR; Netflix is putting the worst part of the web on your TV.

Netflix has near 100% control of their API data. They monitor every single user's behaviors and test for most effectiveness. Whether it's goofy ass bong, changing the rating system, best GUI across the various platforms, changing the title card to see what's most appealing ... etc. If it can be monitored it can be tested and tweaked.
*Tin foil hat time I wouldn't be surprised if Netflix is emitting signals to feed data to Alexa devices or Google Home ... OR if those devices were receiving signals from Netflix audio. Not even for nefarious purposes, but just to sell you more products and sell that data to ad execs.

I feel like I can't just browse because I want to switch away every time the video starts. I just got the Apple TV though and don't think I've noticed it on there.

you can't see shit unless you are right up on the screen.

....doesn't mean I want to drop everything and immediately start the show.
On the flip side, if I have watched 3 episodes in a row there's a pretty strong chance that I DO want to keep watching. Stop asking me if I want to continue.

and forget to turn it off or just don't care to.
Netflix runs ISPs bandwidth into the ground so they cant just let it roll forever (and its very expensive for a host to stream HD content as well). same reason Youtube will eventually stop autoplay if you're inactive long enough.

Makes sense, I just try to keep the controller nearby, but there's times I'm laid out and comfortable and forget. Gotta rearrange the pillow and everything haha.

I turn on TV. I launch Netflix in the TV. Netflix asks me 'Who's watching?' and I select me. Netflix loads. Netflix displays a large area with a "recommendation' that's usually ALWAYS some shit they made - say the new Seinfeld special.
Reminder: I have not pressed a button since I told Netflix who was watching.
Here's what I don't like: Netflix plays the trailer for the thing it suggested with the sound on - meaning its like one of those annoying ads on a trash website.
To stop it I have to scroll off the default area and to something else.

audio on as any sort of default should be punishable by death, probably a decision made by someone in the boardroom with designers/devs being like, oh shit, here he goes again with this dumb shit.
12. "yea it's dumb and unnecessary" In response to Reply # 0
especially, the sound...if it was just the video playing in the backdrop, it's all good. but now, it's pretty much like one of those annoying autoplay ads on a website

A couple years ago I read that Netflix was trying stop the user behavior of people clicking through the thumbnails endlessly and never picking anything, which they found was creating a negative user experience. So they started using larger still shots to entice people to just fucking choose something to watch. Then they started cycling through multiple stills. But now they're auto-playing clips with sound, which is a bridge too far IMO. It's obnoxious.
