"Greatest Hip Hop Group of All Time (with Divisions!)"

Yeah just wasting time here at work.

I divided this into categories, cause I don't think it's necessarily fair to compare Wu-Tang with 9 emcees to Gangstarr which was a duo set up with one emcee.

Large Groups (at least three regularly contributing emcees)
1. Wu Tang
2. NWA
3. Beastie Boys
4. Goodie Mob
5. The Fugees
6. The Lox
7. Bone Thugs
8. Brand Nubian
9. Grand Master Flash & The Furious Five
10. Pharcyde

Duo's (two regularly contributing emcees and/or a producer/dj)

1. Outkast
2. ATCQ
3. De La Soul
4. Mobb Deep
5. Run DMC
6. Salt n Pepa
7. Cypress Hill
8. UGK
9. EPMD
10. 8-Ball & MJG

He's the DJ/I'm The Rapper Category (one regular emcee + dj/producer/band)

1. Gangstarr
2. Pete Rock & CL Smooth
3. The Roots
4. Eric B & Rakim
5. Public Enemy
6. Boogie Down Productions
7. Black Sheep
8. Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock
9. Blu & Exile
10. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

and some made the argument that Wu Tang can't be the greatest cause as a group, they only put out one (or two depending the the viewpoint) great album(s), while Outkast has at least three classics.

I just thought it was unfair to have a large group weighed against a duo.

Did the the number one summer jam for the critically acclaimed movie. Listen to Spike Lee talk about it on Questlove podcast.

Hall of Fame

Took sampling to a place no other group ever did before or after.

Raise the level of Hip Hop across the board with and lyrics and beats.

Dropped classic albums back to back

The groups you listed can't check all of these^^^^^ boxes.

Good think I"m not worried about your boxes. All the groups above them have classic albums and made great music for a longer period of time even if they didn't pioneer blah, blah blah.

I say that even with the deep respect I have for It Takes a Nation of Millions....

that album was a masterwork, very few artists in any genre have made an album as great as that one after 20 years (and a breakup that lasted longer than the group run).

I say this as someone who's very first hip hop album purchase was Raising Hell (ok my mom bought it)

Run was an outsize personality and had bars
while DMC was very very limited in the rhymes department
They took hip hop where it had never been before and were larger than life

But I give the GOAT award to PE, they had everything covered

33. "Make no mistake: Run-DMC's impact WAS musical"
In response to Reply # 30

You can't separate the two.

They *codified* rap music. Stripped away all the excesses and created the formula for everything that came after them.

There's a straight stylistic line that goes from "Sucker M.C.'s" to "Bodak Yellow" 34 years later.

It's Run-DMC and it's not even close.

Everybody is basically just doing Run-DMC.

They might rap better, yeah.

But they're still following the Run-DMC format.

In response to Reply # 39

Early hip-hop records, old school hip-hop, was all over the place.

It might've been a house band interpolating some A Taste of Honey jam while 4 rappers +1 trade 8-bar freestyles for like 39 minutes straight.

Or it could have been a DJ mixing together Queen and Blondie for 8 minutes with some Flash Gordon samples thrown in for good measure.

But then Run-DMC comes out and suddenly hip-hop is them young wylers yellin "MONEY'S THE KEY TO END ALL YOUR WOES" over 808s.

And it's basically still that 35 years later. For better or for worse.

The New School of Hip-Hop. Hardcore Hip-Hop. The Golden Age of Hip-Hop. All that shit starts when Run-DMC drops their first single.

You know it's drama, but it sound real good.

before. Hell, they pioneered the use of drum machines, the use of drum machines along with live instrumentation, and the synthesis of emcee routines and record making. You take any one of those away, Hip Hop changes for the worse. And that's without the industry stuff they did.

There is only a handful of groups that could play to 50 people, 500 people, 5,000 people, or 50,000 people and not have to rely on hit records to smash the venue. Run DMC is at the top of that list.

And don't get it fucked up, no group or artist in the history of Hip Hop has ever been bigger than Run DMC was in 1986. 5 million sold in 1986=about 20 million today.

When we're talking the greatest groups ever, there's few groups we can really put in the same air with them and they all fall short in some way. We take Run DMC for granted because of the era but they managed to shift the culture in a way that made way for the golden age, because they gave the green light for everybody after them to come out and be who they really were.

in this thread is pretty glaring IMO.

Also, should Run The Jewels get some mention in this thread? They've done great work, but to include them on a list of 'of all time' status feels a bit premature.

Good to see The Pharcyde get mentioned though.

based simply on longevity alone, coupled with the fact they are both rolling strong independently. Coupled with the fact both camps have dropped classic material, pretty wild no one else thought fit to mention them.

And the beatnuts are perfectly catered to that. I'm guessing you'd say the raps is what holds them back?

I mean.....saltnpeppa? lol. UGK? Cypress Hill? That's just crazy talk to put them ahead of beatnuts as duo groups.

>Large Groups (at least three regularly contributing emcees)

2. The Roots - belong here (two emcees for first half of career and hella guest the second half)
3. Pharcyde - they made two of the best rap albums ever IMO
4. Beastie Boys
5. NWA - I just don't listen to them like that, so this slot is based on impact
6. Goodie Mob - cause of soul food
7. The Fugees - only cause of the Score
8. Hiero - them being left off is egregious
9. Bone Thugs - so many great songs / hits
10. Boot Camp Click - again egregious

>Duo's (two regularly contributing emcees and/or a
>producer/dj)

1B. Outkast - gave it to Tribe cause of WGIFC/TYFYS, had been Kast for a strong decade
3. De La Soul
4. Mobb Deep
5. Cypress Hill - those first 3 albums a the goods
6. EPMD
7. Run DMC
8. Salt n Pepa
9. UGK - I believe heads who grew up in the south and loved them like that, but IONO, i never rocked with them like that
10.Ball & MJG - same as above
>
>He's the DJ/I'm The Rapper Category (one regular emcee +
>dj/producer/band)

2. Eric B & Rakim - legit one of the only 80s rap artist(s) i rock with heavy
3. Pete Rock & CL Smooth
4. Public Enemy - same as Rah and Eric
5. Boogie Down Productions - same as Rah and Eric

honestly these two don't belong in the same breath as the others
6. Blue & Exile
7. Black Sheep

by certain folks in this post....

It's obvious some people have no idea of why Run DMC's mammoth cultural and musical impact is pretty much peerless....

If I were to sum up Run DMC's greatness beyond all the FIRST they have notched during their history-making run (1st rap group to take hip-hop out of the "band" era with "Sucker MC's"; 1st to go platinum; 1st to headline their own arena tour; 1st hip-hop act to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone and get played on MTV; 1st to prove that hip-hop was not a fad; 1st to sell over 5 million albums with one release, ect...), it would be this.....

Live AID...1985.....BEFORE THE RELEASE OF RAISING HELL, which is crazy in itself. Run DMC were GODS....
