"Toys R Us files for bankruptcy"

have you seen my childhood? (c)

sad.

Toys R Us, the largest U.S. toy store chain, which filed for bankruptcy late Monday, will ask a judge on Tuesday for permission to borrow money so that it can start paying suppliers to ensure it has Lego building blocks and Barbie dolls for the holiday season.

The Chapter 11 filing, to restructure $5 billion of long-term debt, is among the largest ever by a specialty retailer and casts doubt over the future of the company's 64,000 employees and nearly 1,600 stores, which remain open.

This is a much smaller company than Toy's R Us, I wonder if Gamestop will be on the chopping block soon.

gamestop, i can see fading... 'cause people can first sample games on the playstation store, etc.

re toys, though... 60% of the fun was moms taking me and my brother to the toy store. i'm not saying that doesn't happen today, 'cause folks go to the store, look at an item, and then pull out the phone and order it on the amazon app.

but still.

To note, I am a Prime member (primarily for streaming purposes) and I buy stuff from Amazon on a fairly routine basis to save dollars, so I guess I am part of the 'problem', but here in NYC, Amazon has been opening up brick and mortar installations within last year. While it's good in the short term in terms of the immediate jobs created by the new buildings, I have to think traditional offline only brick and mortar stores are quaking in the boots as result, which will result in those businesses closing down eventually. Dunno what the solution is if any since Amazon is so much more convenient and cheaper than most offline only brick and mortar stores, but it's pretty interesting.

Another chain that I have to think it struggling is Best Buy, but at least they sell appliances, and most folks like to see large purchase appliances in person, so I suppose they will serve a purpose even as Amazon continues to grow. That Whole Foods acquisition is only going to make them that much more of a beast. I just hope Jeff Bezos does good things with all the power he is amassing at this point.

target or walmart. toys are easier to find near me. toy r us isn't really unique anymore and is more pricey.

with that said, I remember that feeling of lionel play world/toys r us when getting a new transformer.

I mean, I grew up poor so usually I only got new toys at Christmas.

I don't really remember going to Toys R Us and oogling the Transformers.

FWIW I seem to have taken approach of getting him smaller toys more frequently than wowing him with some huge playset on special occasions. So, i tend to bring him something small quite often. he always seems thrilled.

i think the only place he's seen a big collection of toys is Target.

also Toys r Us is underrated for getting games. They don't make that big of a deal of it anymore which is why people forget to check them when the other stores are sold out.

at least around here. They even had the Switch stocked more reliably

for a lot of the stuff kids want for years now... most people overlook them for the games and ipads... but they had some killer black friday deals...

Children's Palace was my preferred spot as a kid growing up in VA. Used to get all of my Ninja Turtles, Hot Wheels, and Tiger games from them.

Toys R Us was the OG toy store. Lionel Kiddie City, KB Toys, etc could be found in a regular mall. Geoffrey and company usually had their own spot (or was an anchor at a mall when that meant something). Children's Palace tried, but they were always going to be 2nd fiddle without having a giraffe hawking their wares

Sounds like a case of ownership not wanting to let go of their baby. Should have just flat out sold and broken off the brands. Could have been acquired by amazon distributors and had a play in the new business models. Too bad.

I don't need anymore cheap plastic junk in my house. My daughter is much better off going to Gymoree, Tinkergarden or some other educational outdoor interactive experience.

Why can't they rebrand Toys R Us as a destination and charge for entry during key child friendly hours.

Toys are okay but easily recyclable and often they break.

Smaller more streamlined toy sections with nothing but hot sellers. Half the shit in Toys r Us doesn't sell and has nobody even looking in those aisles. The same aisles that are poppin like action figures, dolls, nerf, and Lego are available at Target and Walmart. Plus mom and dad can pick up toiletries and groceries at the same time.

my wife works for a baby retailer and Babies is still #1. We are both wondering how this will affect her company.

In response to Reply # 35

before that is was like a decade of increased sales. Which is pretty fucking impressive. Lego's are still definitely popular. Elementary school aged kids love them and so do adults. I think they just need to make more moderately priced sets. Them shits are expensive as fuck. But when a new hot set comes out. They are sold out in stores first week. Its ridiculous. Shit 2 years ago I tried to get the Lego Advent Calendar for Christmas but I waited until Thanksgiving and couldnt find any. Last year I bought one at the beginning of November. This year I might buy two and sell one on ebay.

In response to Reply # 0

Starting Lineup figures, He Man, Mask, my Sega Genesis that my mom got me while she was recovering from surgery and a weekly trip as a kid are among so many things that stick out to me. I definitely agree that the experience of shopping in a store is underrated, but there is no reversing course here. I also understand that this is a company that didn't do a great job of adapting or running its finances, but that's all logical, emotionally I was kind of taken aback by the news and decided not to think about it.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 0

Plus there are hardly any Toys R Us stores around anymore so its likely not convenient to go to one anyway. Last time I went in one was years ago, but I still geeked out.

As a kid though, nothing was better than being in a toy store. That was paradise. No boring adult shit, just all kid amazingness in every square inch. Everything you ever wanted in one place.
