it's a combination of a lot of aforementioned things, some people matured (GD never did), some people find social media more productive compared to interacting with the same 25 people here, and some shit on here went too far for people to stomach
The RE experience was what you made it. Sure people got in their feelings, but that's going to happen anytime you have a large group of people getting together.
People smoked, lots of fuckery, got drunk, got drunk and kissed the porcelain God, dinner, picnic, made friends, took board beefs offline, dipped off and did their own thing.

I exclude Reddit because its whole purpose is just to be a "old style" message board for the entire internet.
But The Coli and Lipstick Alley are gender-heavy in either direction. I don't think it's possible nowadays to have what this site was pre-2004 again. It's no one's fault, either. OKP has become an older, more 'playery version of The Coli, and that's fine. It's nothing to mourn.
