...that people are singling out millenials for doing now. Only thing that has changed is the technology. The moral of the story is that every generation is wack and has been "ruining" Burning Man in pretty similar ways.

ask a 25 year old what "hooking up" means.

when i grew up that shit meant you fucked. not kissed, not got a blowie, you fucked.

now its anything. also "they're talking" means fucking.

how is hooking up not exclusive to fucking but TALKING MEANS FUCKING?

(im talking like i wasn't born in 84 and am lumped in with these device attached sunovabitches...)

especially with the right camp. in my case an artist-activist camp, and a filipino culture camp that i helped launch that featured epic pop-up dinners and a filipina rapper spitting fire decolonization raps over traditional percussion haha... the art installations and accompanying atmosphere can be unreal, and the poc that make it out there are pretty awesome...

you might think its a place to just stunt for instagram but you can fucking die out there from the extreme conditions. there's no half-assing it. and you can bring shower rigs and there are shower opportunities however rare. it's camping in extreme conditions for 5 - 9 days.

lol. i'm definitely guilty of the old man rant. i'm talking about folks who wouldn't otherwise go places w/out da cameras on 24/7.

was talking to a friend of a friend at happy hour. turns out the chick's a huge homophobe. next day she's FB livestreaming from the gay pride parade.

i'll definitely watch it later.

filipino colleague/buddy of mine had been going for 15+ years (he took this year off after wifey threatened divorce if he'd gone lol), and was slowly building a brigade of black/POC burners.

Reflections of a Seasoned Burner

Playa OG Jonathan Flaxman thinks the BRC festivities were much better back in 1992. While he still attends every year, he admits that it’s becoming harder to find the magic that initially drew him in.

“Gnarf vroomph vargh clippy clop! Bizarlsh nerph huzzay!” Waxed the 49-year-old Hewlett-Packard executive. When asked to clarify his statements, Flaxman excitedly pointed to the nearest EDM stage and asked BMHW to join in a tantric flagging ceremony.

What new scene has emerged? What new style of music? What new fashion?

There is no counter-culture anymore.

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/09/has-the-smartphone-destroyed-a-generation/534198/

If you just scroll down that article there's graphs showing the sharp decline in social activity after the smartphone came out. They don't want to drive. They dont' want to go out. They don't want to date. They don't want to start a band or dj team or skateboard team or graffiti team or party-promotion companies or a dance squad or whatever. It should be the most carefree, best days of their life where they're free to do all that type of shit.

Sadly I see this with my teens. I offered them an old amp I had kicking around and some old speakers. They didn't care. I hooked it all up cause they run our basement and I don't think they've used the speakers once. On a typical Friday night they might have 4 or 5 friends over. Everyone wears earbuds while they play with their individual devices in proxity of each other. There's no collective or group experience. It's so INWARD.

And they FREAK THE FUCK OUT when their gadgets or phones go down or are taken away or stop working. It's disturbing to be honest. It's like taking away their LIFE. I've turned off the internet a couple times because they were fucking up...the severity of their response scares the shit outta me.

You talking about millenials, this article seems to be about todays teens. I'm 28 and the first iphone didn't drop until I was out of high school. I'm glad I wasn't a teen in the smartphone era, my cheap ass parents would have had me lookin dusted and disgusted out chea.

In response to Reply # 46

Is my definition of millenial wrong? I thought it was used for anyone born after jan 1 2000. Why would you include yourself at 28? Also...I figured you were alot older than that. Kudos.

In anycase...the study contained in the article pretty convincingly asserts they DON'T do those things and it certainly corresponds with my personal observations.

basically people who became "adults" in the first 10-15 years of the new millenium, though there's obvisouly variations in the cutoff depending on who you're talking to

i don't think it's usually used in the way you described it

In response to Reply # 0

Most of it was positive (seems split between activists, artists, and general fun vacationers). This part kinda fucked with me tho:

Burning Man is a space where race still exists. It doesn’t disappear, but it’s a magic place. It doesn’t solve everything, but it helps you go through it. I had a night where I was dancing, and I was feeling beautiful and strong, and then I tried to to find a friend in their camp at a party, and a man came up to me and asked, “Are you with this camp? Security is here.” And I felt sad and dark and deflated. He used the word “security”, he said I wasn’t supposed to be there. I had triggered someone’s fear again. That could have broken me. But part of being here is being able to develop your own strength, to look at a person and say, “You are talking from your fear.” I went back to dancing, and I felt beautiful again.

Main reason I haven't gone: extreme camping in extreme heat. But everything else about it is right. Though every year I feel this need to put myself in that extreme to learn something about myself and the world. That's why I've been drawn to cruising - which is similar except it's at the other end of the spectrum. But it removes me from my world and gives me a chance to isolate and pick myself apart to see what's in there. It's an escape. But without the art and only a smidgeon of the drugs. I'm going to do BM at some point. I already know. Lol. I've known since I heard of it.

fuck you.
