Few ways to look at it. One of the more popular classes now is short course trucks. One of the biggest providers of such is Traxxas with their Slash. Considering most of, if not all, of their products have been RTR from the T-Maxx days (and I don't think there are any more monster trucks that come in a kit anymore), it's easy to do a sell a RTR kit for cheap that you don't have to futz around with building it. Toss some batteries in and go. Other manufacturers follow suit to get some of that action.
Another reason is kits have got a lot better than a decade or so ago. While you may not have all the nice aluminum and carbon fiber parts, you do get a full set of bearings throughout and oil filled shicks (sometimes with adjustable collars) rather than bushings and friction shocks that you used to get with a RTR. 2.4 ghz radios are almost standard and worlds better than the AM crystal radios of yore (even though the radios themselves are still pretty bare bones). Some even come with a brushless option that's not too much more expensive than a decent brushed option. Either is faster and more reliable than the standard silver can 540 you'd get.
Add to that the brick and mortar hobby shops are fewer. Harder to get help building a car (or having the shop build it for you) if there isn't a shop with some helpful techs around. RTR you have everything you need without feeling you're being upsold.
All that said, there are always going to be some classes where a kit is the way (or only way) to go. Onroad, be it nitro, electric, 1/10 or 1/8, is going to be dominated by Mugen, Serpent, XRay, Kyosho, Capricorn, Shepherd, etc kits. Racers want to pick their electronics, engine, motor, etc, either because of personal preference or sponsors. But that's not what the majority is running now, for a number of reasons.
I'm having that internal dilemma now looking at the 1/8 GT class. There are a few RTRs out there that are very good (I'm eyeing that Serpent GTE). But I know the compromises of going RTR, so I'm also looking at that Mugen I posted (I still have my MTX4R that I raced with, so I'd be staying in the family). All comes down to money and time, as with most things <-- Dave Thomas knows what's up... __________________________
