https://www.theverge.com/2017/7/27/16049868/richest-person-in-the-world-jeff-bezos

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has now surpassed Bill Gates as the world’s richest person. Bloomberg reports that a surge in Amazon’s stock has helped propel Bezos to the top of rich list, ahead of the company’s earnings reports later today. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has held the top spot since 2013, and if Amazon’s stock price holds after the close of the bell then Bezos will remain top.

At the close of markets on Wednesday, Bill Gates held a fortune of $90 billion, and Bezos was a close second with $89 billion. The rise in Amazon stocks this morning has pushed Bezos above the $90 billion mark, thanks to an increase of around $15 per share and Microsoft’s stock slipping slightly. Bezos is now the sixth man to hold the richest person title over the past 30 years, after originally entering the billionaire list around 20 years ago.

Bezos’ rise demonstrates just how formidable Amazon has grown to become. Founded in 1994, Amazon has reshaped the world of retail in the US and in many other countries after originally launching as an internet book store. While retail stores are still struggling to respond, Amazon is also pushing ahead with its popular Amazon Web Services and its Alexa digital assistant. Investors are expecting revenue to jump by up to 22 percent year-over-year when the company reveals its earnings later today, showing there’s continued confidence in Amazon’s popular businesses.

>This is $90 million 1000 times over!

Yeah I mean what can you do? Like even with 90 mil you would be hard pressed to find ways to spend it.

What I find odd is at that level they all kinda fall into that same kinda billionaire/philanthropist level giving money to schools/orgs etc chilling on a private island. Its interesting to see how pro-active they were at getting their billions (him, gates etc) but kinda how passive they are when it comes to giving back.

buy a couple of private islands
buy a couple of mansions
buy a couple of nice cars
spend like a rock star ( drugs, prositiutes, random private jet flights!)

You consume to the BONE where your body is going to shut down from all the stimulation you're maybe in the hundreds of millions which ain't even 1% of that shit.

Trying not to be all commie, but it's just...wasteful.

Who can you trust?

Where do you donate without the threat of corruption and wasteful spending?

How can you sleep at night knowing you have so much and others have so little and you could do something about it?

3% of 90 Billion Dollars is 270 million.

so if he sat around doing nothing with that money, he could make about 300 million dollars a year (almost a million dollars a day) just sitting there.

in that it's somewhat alarming that this dude owns one of the more influential newspapers out there. Nothing new of course with someone wealthy influencing or outright owning a form of media, and I have Amazon Prime so I guess I shouldn't complain too much, but it does rub me the wrong way.

Not say that this the stuff the Washington Post is instantly discredited, but I have to read their articles with Bezos' influence in mind.

Bottom line is that way to many at the top- especially the tippy top- are not taxed nearly enough.

also, in general, Amazon scares the sh!t out of me.

that's Monopoly money.

too much of it is based on stock money.

it's meaningless, really.

i'm sure Jeff can buy a bunch of shit w/cash. he probably has plenty cash.

but most of his 'worth' is really just credit. it's fake money. Monopoly money.

if i cared i could find out how much like actual physical shit he owns. and how much cash money he has 'earned' this year or whenever. and i could compare those numbers w/other ppl whose money ain't mine and so why would i give a fuck how much $ they got when what they eat don't make me shit.

why do we give a fuck about this shit?

why do they make us count their money?

are they trying to make us forget what's going on in the real world we actually deal with?

i don't care how much money these plastic bitches have.

fuck them.

fuck you.

An entire state, allegedly like shit as no concrete estimate exists, would cost around $80 billion.
https://www.quora.com/How-much-would-it-cost-to-buy-the-whole-United-States-of-America

That leaves a paltry $10 billion to for living expenses.

Dude was right in that I'd be paranoid as shit. You'd have to move like you were on the run. Once people found out they'd try to get you.

I'd take $20 billion and buy a stake in every small businesses in America. A stake could be 5 percent. I want a bag every month from the major small businesses in America. Got a lemonade stand? I want a bag from that. You out here flipping DVDs? I want a bag from that too. You an app developer with 10 employees? Come here and break me off a bag too.

and gates has given away waaaaaaaaaay more than bezos
at least publicly

the numbers are all virtual reality at this point anyway, but this says more about gates than bezos or anyone else to me

its just kinda crazy how far ahead gates was
and took his foot of the gas
and all the stuff bezos and buffett had to get involved in that allowed them to "catch up"
