"Incredible Jessica James Trailer"
Tue Jul-25-17 11:29 PM by Mori

I like the trend of black women leads on screen (Chewing Gum, Issa Rae, Mindy Kaling, Scandal). But this didn't make me laugh at all. I don't watch Daily Show so I've never heard of her.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT5Q0KYqiW0

So I listened to her NPR interview and was a little annoyed with the whole, "I am a unicorn black girl because I grew up around white people and went to white schools". Sounded like she wanted to explain herself to white people. Because as a black woman, I honestly don't care.

http://www.npr.org/2017/07/25/539240567/comic-jessica-williams-on-the-daily-show-and-learning-to-never-be-average

I will listen to her podcast to get a better idea.

But overall this show seems like a black girl's experience for black girls who closely identify with white girls.

She is dark, curvy and represents the brown diaspora. She uses hip hop liberally to relate her jokes to a certain segment of the population.

I was in Bodo Norway above the Arctic circle
https://tinyurl.com/ybupd5rg

Was invited to a party and was told a friend of one of the attendees was going to be there and she was black which I found intriguing because as you can imagine very very few black people up that way. So few you would rarely see one in passing on any given day.

I get to the party, meet the young lady, and am really surprised that she's Indian. I say to my girlfriend at the time -- I thought you said she was black. She says "she is".

Take it or leave it

and Asian, Muslim, and other immigrants refer to themselves as Black as well in parts of the UK, precisely because of the type of racism and xenophobia they face.

Gilroy touches on this in his book the Black Atlantic

yet Mindy is the worst choice cause she don't wanna be looked at as Brown or other.

Of course the character got a septum piercing. Of course.

"I was always told that I acted too white. I was always told that I was going to date a white guy — which, in fairness, was true: I do have a white boyfriend. So they weren't entirely wrong, but all of those things were really damaging."

LMAO wow

- And she was like, "You tell me. Would an average black kid have that? Would one of your little cousins have that?" And she's pointing to my computer, and I don't say anything. She's like, "No!" She points to my phone, and she's like, "Would an average black kid have that?" She's like, "No!" She points to my TV, "Would an average black kid have that? No!" Points to my Harry Potter books, "Would an average black kid have that?" I was like, "Uhhh, no?" She was like, "No!"

Ummmm...plenty of black kids have computers and tv and Harry Potter books. This reeks of "we aint like them niggers over there".

No mention of the father, was he not in her life? If so that explains a lot.

Classic "i don't rock with black folk cuz they called me an oreo in 5th grade and now i desperately look for validation from white folks who only fuck with me because i'm essentially a dark skinned version of them". 15 years ago she'd have an OKP handle.

Insecure - still black as fuck though and its based on the original idea that the highest sin a black person can commit is being awkward while black.

Key and Peele - is based on the idea that they are both mixed race and I forget the quote but its something like "the inner dialog of a black man acting like a white man acting like a black man"

Trevor Noah - is south african and black as fuck in his own culturally specific way

Kamau Bell - is black as fuck and makes it a whole point to call out racial injustice.....but his wife is...well, counter to what his message is.

before the whole afropunk thing really started to pop off ,I remember knowing lots of black kids and also being a black kid who was between the world of being a weirdo and black and not being able to bring the two together

I went to afropunk last year and got mad as fuck because I'm in a different place in my life and I wished something like this was happening when I was in high school or undergrad

now black and weird live in harmony. you can be black as fuck and into whatever now. At this point you have to damn near walk down the block in a literal space suit holding a cake with sparklers in it for folks in the hood to look at you strange.

like, whats the excuse at this point?

When people say they can't find folks with the same interest but they always find them with other races i side eye.

Usually these folks go to some event that doesn't have a lot of Black folk but if there is a few other Black folk they usually avoid them, don't make eye contact or have a "don't speak" look.

>So I listened to her NPR interview and was a little annoyed
>with the whole, "I am a unicorn black girl because I grew up
>around white people and went to white schools". Sounded like
>she wanted to explain herself to white people. Because as a
>black woman, I honestly don't care.

I get the angle of the black person raised around white people and their whole world view is shaped by it. May not like em, may volunteer em to be first on the wall when the revolution starts, but we all have acquaintances/family members on that juice. Some of us may have tried in vain to fuck some of em in high school (*sheepishly raises hand*)

But she is different.

She did a great job on the Daily Show as the 'black' representative and it initially made me a fan but after hearing her podcast and following her career I realized her blackness was due to the writers (probably white writers too imagine that shit )

She's just not as woke as she thinks she is. Someone mentioned Mindy Kaling and that's on the nose...the thing is that Mindy doesn't really talk on race issues and doesn't portray herself as a solid representative of brown in the world.

Jessica does.

So I will listen to her podcast go on about white people on some I took an online course on African-American History 101 course...but then fawn over white guys and girls on some very frivolous 'wouldn't it be nice to date/live like them?"

And it's not about her dating preferences; we've more then chuckled on the boards about woke motherfuckers that stay in the swirl.

It's the fact her blackness is a fashion. Black blogs love to go after the Kardashians for jacking blackness but imho she's as egregious. Like I saw this pic in a nytimes profile this weekend and choked.

https://static01.nyt.com/images/2017/07/23/arts/23JESSICA-JAMES1/23JESSICA-JAMES1-superJumbo.jpg

The natural hair, the nose ring, the shot under the bodega, the blurred out urban background. I ain't never seen someone that unwoke look that woke, LOL. She went full Solange with the septum piercing on top.

She's found a way to get paid being the safe black girl; the one that will check off all the vague liberal checkboxes (anti police brutality, pro-equality in pay)...but compared to her new media contemparies she's woefully vanilla.

The anger you get from The Read podcast, the 'we laugh to keep from crying' in Desus and Mero, her former Daily show contemporary Hasan Minaj's absolutely scorching Netflix comedy special on growing up in America muslim...she's just the modern day Sammy Davis Jr where she's forced to deal with race because of the time but at the end of the day couldn't be bothered.

I despise when these types blame Black folk for their whiteness. "people teased me" said I would "date white"

yeah, so instead of being a normal person and taking the teasing with a grain of salt you ran out and followed the timeline they teased you with?

you will get your education in 'blackness' quick...looking for that apartment, dealing with white (and black) co-workers, dating. It's alot easier to stay in that bubble in suburbia USA, and not that difficult in college depending on where you go/who you hang with.

All I can think of is since she's had such great success so early on she never had to deal with that shit. She was on the Daily show when she was 22, she's only 27 now. Problem is you can only be the patron saint of black hipster girls for so long; when you're in your 30's and hollywood is telling you like you washed up cause you have a vagina and they can't throw you in as a love interest with Jared Leto cause you too dark....*shrug*

Gross asked James about her relative early success, and James shot back claiming that she's dealt with plenty of rejection throughout her young life. She then transitioned that comment into how she had feelings of nonacceptance and insecurity among her Black peers.

Perhaps she'll age into her Negritude.

the suburb I grew up in, the second half of my life, was Latinx, Black, and white... and for the most part working class, which after the recession hit became working poor

she seems like she comes from an environment where she was the only black kid around white people who had access and privilege (community, school, and work)...

that shit can/could/would fuck some one up in many ways, and into adulthood.

but I wonder why she (and other like her), choose to blame Black people for her worldview and not whites. it's the oddest thing about folk like her

Whether it's black people talking about white folks rock with them or they date only white people or white people making their whole persona about rocking with black people. That shit is corny.

I remember watching Jessica's podcast partner do a set and 75% of that was about dating white dudes. Shits weird and lame.

Being 'regular black' in all its shades without having to deal with a race is a way to break barriers...its why we still think Cosby ain't rape them women. I hope this movie does well too, and I might check it out (cause Chris o Dowd is a slept on comedic actor, lol).

Fast and The Furious is one of the worlds biggest franchises and breaks doors even by not having to tackle race in the movie, just for POC's to be at that level of hollywood is a good look.

The thing is that this movie is also a part of a pattern that I don't think we need in 2017

Where everything is honky dory. You're were making a movie during the Trump campaign (possibly after he got elected), cop killings on tv weekly, but you think having a black character date a white character is freeing for race not to come up?

"And I also think it's progressive to not make a mention of race in certain stories. ... I think that there is something to having a minority or person of color or somebody who is queer or whatever just exist in a story and have it not be about that."

I don't expect her to shoehorn 'Look Who's Coming to Dinner, 2017' in a dramedy about being young and dating but at the same time its disingenuous to have those two characters from completely different racial backgrounds interact and race not be a part of it.

Like i said above the Cosby show, Fast Furious, etc...don't have to deal with race because their characters already exist in their own world not really heavily dealing with the white one which is why her queer comment rings untrue; if a queer person decided to give a CIS white male a shot at a date you bet they would cover it in the movie. In 2017 you still get sideways stares from folks on both sides from interracial dating, to not even crack a joke or make a mention to it in passing?

Fucking weird.

It's kinda sucks to see a neighborhood get gentrified by your own, nahmean? LOL. Clutching purses when my nerdy ass walks by because its night...getting more acknowledgement when I hit em with the 'welcome to the neighborhood!' smile from their white boyfriend then them...even though they look like they hopped out of a Solange video.

It's bizarre because when I was growing up their type wanted nothing to do with us regular negros...now its like they want the best of both worlds.

You nailed it here:

>when I read it I thought of S2 of Master of None where race
>was a factor but it was a layer among several nuanced dialogs
>

Aziz's comedic focus is relationships; in his standup and even when he was on Parks and Rec...i would be jarring to have him go all Indian Paul Mooney on the race jokes.

But in his TV show he's got no problem pointing out how fucked up it is Indian actors can only play stereotypes; he threw in the black female friend to cover queer and race issues, and he throws his actual parents on to show that he's Indian as fuck.

Race is an issue on the show even if he spends a season in Italy chasing after white girls. That's why I find her frustrating...hopefully she's just explaining it wrong and its more on what Aziz is doing as opposed to just ignoring race.

this show or movie or whatever it is primarily looks very boring and not at all incredible. I'll avoid all the race politics of it for now and just say that. doesn't matter if she's black or white the show just looks and sounds and feels boring from that trailer. bad job on them.

this post is making want to check out this show more and more just to see if it's as bad as you folks are making it out to be.

And for the record, I don't truly vibe with the 'new-blackness' that I see folks criticizing Jessica Williams for, but at the same time, I can't knock her for getting a paycheck. Pretty similar to how I felt when I read that Sage Steele was getting demoted on ESPN some months ago.

The WS reward system...

When self-hatred and thirst for white approval
are the easiest ways for us to get a paycheck that
is otherwise very hard to come by...

on top of this paycheck being gained in mediums
that strongly influence our masses...

Now we ourselves will celebrate self-hatred and
lust for white approval.

I can't be the only one who finds that troubling.

It's ironically-titled.

As for their podcast together, yeah, they stay gushing over white dudes. But their actual guests are usually anything but. I've been exposed to hella black comedians off that shit.

So I can put up with the occasional Ryan Gosling hymn in exchange for what they bring me.

It's entitled So Many White men because I heard Phoebe say that's all she's surrounded with by comedy which is a legit gripe. Make that space for you and your peoples boo.

But its weird to feel that kind of 'cism professionally then personally be all hyming up Ryan Gosling.

And the thing is, again, its not necessarily about their dating preferences. Lord knows you put me on, ITS GONNA BE SNORTING WHITE GIRL WHILE IM SITTING BETWEEN WHITE GIRLS.

is when I realized I was not cut out for that life.

about 7 years ago I got serious with a gal and when I went to her folks house for Thanksgiving I was dropped right into the milk.

Oh, they were nice folks but I had too too many questions where I had to step up to mic on some "On behalf of all black people in America, I would like to say....."

When ole girls mom started screaming in Vietnamese I was like nah... fuck that shit.

Went to my wife's fam the first year we met and it was like home. I got a white brother in law, he's cool but he don't come around like he used too... lol.

and such intra-racial comfort is common for
most people.
While you're still name-calling in your biracial outrage,
mad on some "but that's how I was made!"

Yeah... it's pretty clear by now that all yall
who scream "hotep" at every turn are the biggest
advocates for Black self-annihilation, so it's
not surprising.

Sure accuse me of dating "hella white women"
since that's your thing lately... even tho
it's completely untrue. Call me names, etc.
Since lies and name-calling are literally all
you have in your pathetic toolbox.

so I knew I could at least give this a chance.
There were some decent moments, but overall I did not enjoy the movie.
Jessica Williams isn't bad and the reasons, highlighted in this post, which are off-putting about her personality don't present poorly in her role. I just disliked the story. Neither the romance nor comedy was entertaining to me in this RomCom, it took me three tries to fully watch.
The best part, Lakeith Stanfield can certainly make something out of nothing roles, he's talented.

some of the convos with the kids were extra (esp when she got mad at Shandra for going with her dad).
Her getting with Boone was like...ehhh...that whole first date was trash (the one were she's like i'm only here because of my friend).

It was cool, cute. but honestly if she hadn't been on desus and mero, i wouldn't have watche d it.

we made it 15 minutes in and looked at each other. talked about it and decided to skip 10 minutes.

we skipped ten min. still garbage.

we skipped another ten min. still trash.

we just kept skipping ten min and watching a min until we finished.

total watch time was around 17 minutes.

what made it so bad?

the stiff acting.

the bad character development.

the horrible retread of a story.

This movie had zero redeeming qualities.

The main character was just awkward as all fuck and not awkward in a cutesy way but awkward in a "this is what watching someone pretend to act looks like"

pure garbage, and for all the shit Ive been talking about J Willy in this thread I was actually hoping the movie would shut me up and get on the Jessica train.

from the little bit I watched if felt like JW watched Unbreakable Kimmy and Master of None and said "I'm going to make a movie just like those shows.. but I will do it while being in my Daily Show character"

Not a fan of this robotic, cold acting style where you run through your lines while smiling all the damn time.

It works in Master of None and Kimmy because the jokes are funny as shit but even those shows I can only do a few episodes at a time. Plus on those shows there is some real talent.

Didn't finish it this time around.

mostly it's the title and the deliberate "I'm acting for a show" acting style but I laughed in season 1. That Pinot Noir shit was hilarious.

Chris O' Down did the disaffected slacker better then she did. I see what they were trying to do (the dancing intro, Keth Stanfield's looney ex boyfriend character etc) but like Legs said the indie relationship-comedy thing that's been popping in this TV golden age is already crowded enough by niggas doing it at a high level..this seems like the throwaway movie Netflix wouldda had ten years ago.

Weirdest thing about it: for someone who was struggling through a breakup there was no struggle she was oddly emotionless...she seemed as bored with the movie as we were, lol.

she was in love with her ex in the first place. Just one moment in the bed. Meanwhile, she seemed to be moving on alright with the next dude and for someone struggling to get by teaching theatre to kids. When Chris O'Dowd was flipping her instagram feed, Jessica was traveling all over the place. There was no urgency or emotional connection. On that front, she reminds me of a lot of New Yorkers from the late 90's forward. Just existing in a really expensive playground.

I thought it was very subtle and nothing about the experience was dependent on race.

Odd because she heavily depended on race to get her in the spotlight. Which probably means that she has dto shuck and jive to get to the point where she didn't have to shuck and jive.

I am glad we are at a point where we can make movies that race isn't the driving factor and black actors get to do roles where there race ain't the primary driving force of their story...

But it's weird if race never comes up for a black person dating a white guy even indirectly (eg, cultural miscommunication or conflict). You would almost have to purposefully try to avoid it and what's to gain from that?

and never when it's unnecessary.

I hate when race is a forced issue in movies and TV shows. Shows like Insecure have the right balance to me. There are some incredibly black references in the show but they don't drive the narrative of the show at all. Another good example is Boomerang, where race only came up once as an actual issue.

My problem with Jessica Williams is that, even though I find her somewhat funny, she tends overemphasize her blackness in a way that comes off so forced and weird. Then she tries to overexplain it. It's almost as if she learned how to be black instead of just being herself....a black woman from a mostly-white environment.

The last episode of Insecure had a moment when Lawrence's friend said, "Are you using that "Mane and Tail". That is a very black hair care product.

I agree that Williams' seems contrived in some ways. She tried with Sarah Jones, but that still didn't feel authentic.

If you're a black hipster swirler type you basically living a white lifestyle anyway. Not too much friction. Only time it comes up is when a Tamir/Sandra Bland type situation occurs and even then, those types would prefer to ignore it.

how she grew up in west philly with a single mother (and drug-addicted father)
but still managed to be the 'whitest' girl in our friend group, I just don't know.

Joined a white sorority and everything.

Oddly enough, she's at often at her 'blackest' while in front of her
white boyfriend.
