"To Dog, or not to Dog, That is The Question....."

So i'm thinking about getting a dog. Gave it some thought last year then said "eh"

But I sort of would like to have some life in the house. Only thing killng me is what type of dog, and what to do with them during the day when I'm at work. I guess I'd have to crate train, as I don't want a dog walker coming in my house during the day.

Then I guess I gotta expense for vet visits, toys, accessories and food. Cool.

Most likely would get a small dog. Think beagle, pug, jack russell terrier.

Probably get something from the rescue that's already been somewhat trained.

Also I'm a little nervous cause I would be a first time pet owner.

So talk me into or out of it.

Eh, see now that's what I thought, but the more I learn, the more I realize it's not as bad as it sounds.

Some of the smaller breeds of dog even prefer their crates. And some well trained dogs, you can give the run of the house and train them to go on puppy pads in the crate, but other wise they can move about how they please.

So you gotta consider that too.

you making it sound like the dog is in Abu Ghraib while the owner is at work. Dogs sleep like 14 hours a day, on average. When school is in, my dog is in his crate from about 830 to 230, during the day. If he crate-trains his dog from jump, he'll be just fine getting in there and chilling while he's gone.

Dogs don't mind the crate (obviously having the option to roam about is more preferable) but some dogs do get bad separation anxiety.

They're small, pretty smart, easy to train, don't shed, and don't have to be walked that long. They can be high energy at times, especially when you get home. I can speak from personal experience that mine doesn't destroy things when we're not home. The worst he'll do is to take Kleenex's out of the trash. In general, they're great to have around.

Only thing I'd ask is how busy are you? Because we adopted our guy from someone who was a RN that worked more than 12 hours a day. So when he got home, he'd be exhausted and didn't know how to deal with the Boston Terrier energy, so he kept him in his crate unless he was taking him out or feeding him. But then again, that guy got a dog ostensibly so he could pick up dates, so he wasn't the right type of dog owner anyway.

coming and going as you please...even staying out all night or going on sporadic vacations.....

Plan on giving alladat up if you get a dog...
It ain't exactly like having a kid...but it's pretty damn close...
This is coming from someone that has two kids and once upon a time had two dogs....
Looking back, I lightweight regret that we had dogs for as long as we did. It really put a cramp on the years we could have been enjoying with a tad bit more fervor before we had kids.

Just know they cost time and money... good luck with whatever you decide though!

Eh, I don't travel that much at all. And even if I planned too, I could kennel the dog for a few days or a week or so.

But my commute is like 45min each way and I have an 8 hour work day, but also work from home days.

I have a walk out basement, so I'd have a small yard if it was fenced in, but I won't have that done for a while, so I'd have to keep him/her inside.

an animal?

not in harsh storms but in general?

Plus around here, there's probably only about a 1-2month window of time where any non-wild being could safely tolerate living outdoors 24/7.

some dog are perfectly fine outside all day. others, not so much. a lot of it depends on the owner's preference and what the dog gets use to.

I'm not a fan of keeping dogs outside and my dog reflects that. and in this summer heat or winter time, I wouldn't keep them outside much anyway.

We also used the "doggy daycare" places for boarding because they actually let the dogs play out in the open all day vs. being locked up in a lil assed cage except for 5 min walk breaks.

its like airbnb for dog. People charge like $25-$60 a day. Once you find a good sitter you are good to go.

Once you get a good rapport with the sitter, you can arrange off the books for a lower fee(doggy vacay takes a commission) You'd just lose out on the doggy vacay insurance.

But our sitter is great, she lives 10 mins away and they take him on like 3-4 walks a day. Dude always comes home exhausted and sleeping for a whole day.

have had my pup for almost 2 years now.

She brings me so much joy every single day

I recently relocated from VA to GA and she has helped make the transition so much easier for me just by being a 'constant'

(if that makes sense)

She's awesome

I use to crate train but now I just leave her out while I'm at work and use pee pads.

When I travel I board her - she really enjoys doggy daycare.

I pay about $35/mo for her wellness plan.

Shes only gone to the vet once for an 'illness' and that was last week or so for an upper respiratory infection and it cost me under $50, including a "pedicure."

*she just sheds sooooo damnnnn bbadddddddddddd. she was a gift so I didn't pick the breed. that's my only complaint.

if you can manage to get one without too many behavioral or health issues. we have a 60lb mutt (looks like a mix of pitbull and boxer) from a shelter.

I don't really ever want to pay for a specific breed, but rescues orgs might be cool for that.

the cost gets lower after the first year. basically just need shots and food. toy and treat are good too. you shouldn't have too many vet visits other than the annual check up.......unless some injury happens. my dog has had knee surgery and staples in his paw.

crate training is fine for the most part. you may eventually be able to remove the dog from the crate. we ditched the crate after we saw that he wouldn't crap in the house or chew on anything.

you will have to be home more, especially during the first few months while potty training. should be fine in crate/house afterwards.

in my head purebred = inbred. No gene-pool variation

beware of tendencies..some breeds are prone to bad hips or bad temperament.

If the dog is for YOU, get a female. It supposedly has something to do with being alpha and leading the dog.

What I DO know is that my last 2 dogs have been small (Chihuahua mixed with ????) and a lot of fun.

and I was a 'I don't want no fkin dog' person.

Now I miss my dog.

good luck. read up.

Or you get your dog spayed before their first heat, so there are no blood splatters. I had my puppy fixed at 7 months old.

Anyone keeping their dog intact should get a side-eye.

its pretty much like having a child.

Potty training is terrible especially when you work during the day. you are basically waiting for the dog to not be able to hold his movements any longer and praising him til you look like a jackass after...every single time.

my advice is pay for training. It cost us about $1500 (lady kept him for 2 weeks) but it was well worth it.

Honestly, dogs are the shit. Maybe you could try babysitting a couple of dogs beforehand to get a feel of it, to some its a better idea on paper.

I ummed and arred about this for about a year after we bought our apartment (was never allowed when renting), but we finally took the plunge last year and I will NEVER LIVE WITHOUT A DOG AGAIN. I never had them as a kid, though my girlfriend did... but mainly we were learning from scratch. Raising a puppy is a surprisingly natural thing... I was worried about house-training and general grossness, but he didn't gross me out once... he was a helpless little baby furball, I couldn't do anything but smile most times when he took a shit in the wrong place.

This little Boston Terrier is a constant ray of sunshine. My girlfriend struggles with anxiety and low moods and he's way better than me at helping... on the flip, he's always willing to playfight with me or come with me on a run.

We both work, so he's got used to being on his own through the day... the earlier they get used to it, the easier it is for them... same with sleeping in his crate overnight... he's never known any different and just sleeps through any period we're not there (I have a webcam because it took me ages to get cool with leaving him)... he doesn't whine or complain about it, just waits for us to get back. HESSUCHAGOODBOY

I genuinely can't imagine our lives without a dog now. Homes need dogs.

You're willing to get an older dog (that can already hold its bladder most of the day)
and that you're willing to go through training class with, if necessary (it is usually necessary).

You don't want it to have to stay in just a crate for 8 hours a day. At least have a cordoned off area
(a lot of people use a room with a baby gate at the door, or have a fenced in area off the side of the living room or something).

Daycare is a great option and it's often affordable at vet clinics too.

You could get a Boston terrier or pug or French bulldog, all pretty low-energy with personality.
Or you could spend like 1/4 of the cost on a shelter dog that you know already has all its shots
and has had its behavior observed. You can meet and greet with it, even foster it and see if you want to make it final.

She was a 5 month old mixed breed puppy. She was a LOT of fun, but holy shit, man. She wasn't housebroken. THAT was a nightmare. We basically had to train a dog who had only lived outside to live indoors AND not shit everywhere. She ALWAYS got in the trash when we weren't home, and she always got up on the furniture. It sucked.

She got over on a lot of people because she was really playful and cute, and she didn't bark or make a lot of noise. but she pretty much destroyed the house. Chewed up EVERYTHING.
