I was working on this show, and he was a musical guest on it performing with Akwafina. This show was full of surprise musician guests - DMX, Montell Jordan, Natalie Maines, Kenny Loggins, Sebastian Bach, etc. and of all of them - Chester was the only guy to show up to rehearsal. Not sound check - everyone (except DMX) showed up to that, the day of - but Chester wanted to come by for rehearsal so he could meet Nora (Awkwafina).
He'd heard she was a huge fan, so he brought her Linkin Park swag and hugged her - performed with her a few times on the rehearsal day, and then came back the next day as a musical guest for the taping. The room fucking exploded when he came out as he was just booked 2 days prior and nobody knew.
I remember being at rehearsal, in this empty room watching them sound check (pic: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPA5azYAjQ4/ )- he sounded amazing, was so happy and full of life, and was just a real fucking pro.
I loved Hybrid Theory when it came out. Right in my prime teen angsty years. That good slam your door and blast it music when your parents pissed you off.

From looking at the social media remembrances, LP was the "first band" for a ton of people who are now in their mid to late twenties. I knew a few people who've worked with them and have only heard good things about him and the rest of the band.

you look at either of the first two albums and even the songs that arent singles are hits AND perfect as well. the songs they did for Transformers, incredible and iconic. i really wish i could've seen them live around like 07 before they started to move into other sounds.
they were based in rock but authentically hip hop enough to appeal to the black kids. i remember them being a major source of common ground in music discussions in middle and high school.
i know for myself at 11, Reanimation exposed me to so hip hop artists i'd never heard of. look at the tracklist and see who's on it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reanimation_(Linkin_Park_album)
Black Thought Alc The X-Ecutioners Evidence Pharaoahe Monch Kutmasta Kurt etc
i truly think Reanimation is one of the most brilliant albums ever. the way they rearranged those Hybrid Theory songs with electronic and hiphop contributions is amazing. it has my absolute favorite LP song ever in KRWLNG which is the audio equivalent of drowning in an ocean of your problems. now compare that to the original Crawling which is just full of anger and energy and it sounds like your demons are eating you alive. and that's just one example of the emotional range they could convey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBRJK8cwP74 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd9OhYroLN0
The Jay-Z Collision Course album was huuuge for killing that "rap is crap" stigma among rockists. it's no accident Jay-Z the opportunist decided to clique up w/ them.
in the anime community they are basically the alpha and the omega. these dudes had anime as the number 1 video in america for WEEKS on end.
and then you get to Chester's fucking voice. i can't even begin to describe how much it hits you in the chest and brings out such a deep gutteral rage and energy. i dont know how anyone who was around back then could hear him deliver "crawling in my skin these wounds they will not heal" and not feel it on SOME level. he sings it from the bottom of his soul.
that was a bit of a ramble but i still cant really get my thoughts together on this.
First two LP albums still get the odd bit of play in my house... I kinda lost steam with them after that, but Chester, man... he had SUCH a great voice.
Was disappointed I didn't get organised to go and see them with a friend last month.

It is not working but that's okay.
This hurts real bad because he's that real. It takes a powerful soul to write those lyrics and sing them out loud. Needless to say I am not okay after Chester's passing. It's crazy because I see myself at times through his lyrics so this is weird.
