"Girls Trip. Dunkirk. Valerian."

Something for everyone this week at the movies. Milage may vary on what you want tho.

Girls Trip:
Four strong black women reconnect and rediscover sisterhood. The chemistry between the four leads was really good. Not to mention the jokes are funny (and raunchy as fuck) and the chemistry. I always thought Tiffany Haddish should be bigger. Hopefully, this does it. I would not be surprised (or mad) if this gets a sequel.

Valerian:
Something the whole family can enjoy. The 3D is a trip and this is miles better than Avatar. It's cliched and a lot of it feels familiar, but it's fun and visually stunning with cool action set pieces. I didn't see much in 3D this year (and I don't want to either), but this is mos def worth it.

Dunkirk:
A lot of reviews are calling this Nolan's masterpiece and those motherfuckers need to calm down. It's very good and is a visceral experience that puts you into the war with the soldiers. I thought the PG-13 rating would hinder this but nope. Despite no blood or gore, this is still intense as fuck. If you can make a trip out of it or go to a 70MM IMAX or IMAX Laser as in that format it's immersive as fuck. If it's just not possible period, do 70MM and it seems the 70MM is playing at a lot of locations. If that's not possible then faux IMAX is better than nothing. Also, this is the rare war film that's less than two hours. Just as warning you might need to decompress afterward cause this film is relentless.

Picture quality and sound are much better than fake IMAX. Also, the film was shot in IMAX 70MM and 70MM. 80 minutes of a 104-minute film were shot in IMAX 70MM. The picture quality is crazy.

The image and sound quality are much, much more superior in IMAX 70. But if you have a Laser on a real IMAX, then don't worry too much. It's still dope.

I want to see this movie because of the cast, but I doubt it will do well at the box office.

Chick flicks don't do well at the box office. They always see justice later on video.

in 'us'

I doubt it will hit Tyler Perry box office numbers.

The marketing has been targeted mostly towards black women on shit like Essence, Centric and other horrible stuff.

I'm going to see it because it's finally a black movie, but based on the presentation I don't have high hopes.

I can't even imagine. I know my husband would take me to see it, but that's out of love for me and not the movie.

The other movie Rough Night didn't do well either, so I'm comparing. I just don't think a chick flick will do well. The only time I remember seeing record numbers for a chick flick was Sex and the City the first movie.

The 50 Shades movies did very well, in spite of awful word of mouth. Hidden Figures made $169 million on a $25 million production budget. Is that a chick flick, though? It starred women and was about these women and their struggles, but historical dramas aren't typically thought of as chick flicks. Hell, Bad Moms had an even smaller budget and still did over $100 mil, to the point where it's inexplicably getting a sequel.

If this is any good at all and doesn't get sunk by word of mouth in the following weeks, it'll do fine.

I think chick flicks only about women and focused on women. Stuff only women can understand and relate to. Sometimes it's about love or just all out pussy power.

26. "Rough Night looked like Very Bad Things but with women"
In response to Reply # 19

Very Bad Things was a Very Awful Movie, and I'm not sure why anyone thought a cast full of women would make it any better (though I will say ScarJo, McKinnon, Zoe Kravitz, Ilana Glazer and Jillian Bell is a more likable group of people than Christian Slater, Jon Favreau, Jeremy Piven and those other two guys).

Seriously, she is like the Keanu Reeves of white females. Just bland.

That trailer looked corny as shit.

so I googled...

I can't remember her in anything besides a princess movie promo poster from waaay back.

ScarJo is hot for some reason but most of her movies are trash. Anytime I see she is the lead in something I know it will flop.

She was on that pre-comeback Matty Mcconaughey getting checks paid off her idealized Hollywood whiteness. But she's got a handful of bangers when she's not being white girl pseudo pretty; Rachel's Getting Married remains one of my fav's and that's because of her playing an absolutely abhorrent human being in a fucking dark ass movie.

Like I said, she was cashing them 'Doe eye whitegirl in a whole new wonderful place over her head who eventually finds her inner strength and princess powers!' for a long time until she got hollywood aged out (lolz, at what 29?).

ScarJo hasn't done the whole great artistic roles in small movies thing. I remember an indie movie I liked called Ghost World where in the beginning of the movie the female lead worked with a character at a supermarket who's acting was so bad, so wooden, I thought it was the directors daughter or something.

That was the first time I saw Scarjo, LOL.

We support our comedies, especially if its a good cast.

I knew it would do well. Not 30 mill well but at least 20 mill.

This should definitely get a sequel

even though that film has Fire Stick and Chill Classic written all over it, I want to support that movie because black women used to have ensemble movies all the time in the mid 90s but now......they're scarce.

Also, if the crowd for Girls Trip is like the crowd that was out when I saw Get Out, the theater's gonna be lit.

Haddish was funnier than anyone in Bridesmaid and as someone who also wants to make it in Hollywood I'm happy to read she's 37, not a young starlet like so many others other there.

Inspiring.
