My bottom wisdom teeth were impacting my molars. Had it done on a Friday morning...milkshakes and soup all weekend.

It wasn't that bad. A few hits of nitrous and I was good to go. Recovery wasn't too bad either, but going through it now may be a different story.

You will either develop a habit or you will be a miserable, sleep-deprived asshole for 7 to 10 days after the four weeks are up.

Breathe that nitrous in deeply and get some codeine (Tylenol 3's) for a couple days.

In response to Reply # 0

They came in when I was 17 (I'm 36 now) but they haven't bothered me or impacted my teeth in any negative way.

They are difficult to clean. My new dentist keeps pressuring me to have them pulled but he hasn't given me a good reason why I should and since they don't hurt I have decided to keep them. I think my dentist just wants that insurance money.

I had two out and then the other two were pulled ten days later. I wasn't knocked out for it, I just had a local anaesthetic each time - nothing else, but then I didn't want sedation as I had to walk to the appointments. I was very late having mine out so there were additional risks. It was quite a stressful time.

Very little pain.

I am taking Norco (Acetaminophen & Hydrocodone) and I've got a headache from it - hopefully I can stop taking those tomorrow.

Without the Norco my upper mouth was sore but not awful.

I still have bloody salvia.

I've eaten a ton of ice cream and yogurt and water.

Right now I am nauseous - it was to be the Norco.

So not bad.

While waking up from the anesthesia I started crying a few times - they say it's normal - but it was really weird.

In response to Reply # 32
Sat Jul-15-17 06:58 AM by denny

Same thing happens with first time heroin users. Best way to avoid it is DON'T MOVE. Get a tv remote and everything else you need on a table beside your bed and couch. Even sitting up slightly will bring it back on but if you stay still it should remain under control. Keep your head on a pillow and only move your hands/arms.

The nausea will eventually go away and you will start to notice a euphoric feeling of well-being. It's a trap. Be careful and don't take it if you don't need it. If any alternatives work better (edible marijuana for example) work for you than throw those pills down the toilet.

It's good advice to only take them when you have pain - and I will follow it.

The penicillin can cause nauseasa too - but Im on that 4 times a day for a week no matter what.

In response to Reply # 36

Wisdom tooth extraction? Sure.

But opiate withdrawal increases pain sensitivity so this advice is VERY bad in longer term situations. Pain is subjective and after you've been on opiates for multiple weeks....what would normally register as a 5 (on a scale on one to ten) will register as an 8 or 9 in conjunction with opiate withdrawal.

So you can see the error in logic. Opiate withdrawal CAUSES pain...and patients are told to keep taking the meds if they feel pain. This is how the opiate epidemic began.

In short time...doctors will not prescribe hydros for wisdom tooth extraction. In the meantime....stay safe and flush them down the toilet. Drink booze or smoke/eat herbs instead.

Hydros are more addictive than crack. Scientifically proven. Flush them down the toilet.

I invoked crack to shock handle into thinking that the harmless pill he was taking wasn't harmless. My point stands. Hydrocodone is more addictive than crack. Suppose crack DID have a medicinal use? Would that convince someone to smoke it? Probably not because of the taboo.

There should be taboo about all opiates. Hydro and Oxy are heroin. I know that cause I'm a junkie. Doing a bump of heroin and taking a hydro are the same thing to me. If people know that they might be more careful. That's my motivation.

A 5 year in-the-tooth crackhead can clean up in 3 to 4 days. A six month Hydro dance will take 3 weeks to clean up and will be 10 times more traumatic. That's my ends.

They prescribed codeine for the pain, but it made me nauseous so I couldn't take them.

It wasn't bad at all, though. I remember them telling me it took a little longer than they had planned because they ended up having to split two of them into pieces in order to extract them. Only felt like twenty minutes tops to me.

And the recovery wasn't nearly as painful as everyone had made it out to be.

51. "You do know that wisdom tooth removal is usually a preventative measure?"
In response to Reply # 39

My dentist suggested I have them removed because three of the teeth hadn't yet grown in, he feared the teeth would shift the rest of my mouth once they did. Also I was about to be bounced off of my parents insurance, so he insisted that I get the surgery ASAP--to avoid running into issues down the road--in case I was under/uninsured for the remainder of my early 20s.

45. "Update: Doing well - but may have paresthesia (nerve damage)"
In response to Reply # 0

Its been 9 days since they were taken out.

Bleeding only happens if I brush my teeth and hit these areas.

No pain at all.

But..

My tongue is numb on one side - that's possible nerve damage.

Thus food tastes weird and not good.

What it is:
https://www.animated-teeth.com/wisdom_teeth/t7-wisdom-tooth-paresthesia.htm

It involves a situation where tissues or structures in or around the mouth (lip, tongue, facial skin, mouth lining, etc...) experience prolonged or possibly permanent altered sensation as a result of nerve trauma.

In most cases the trauma has been caused by an event that has bruised, stretched or crushed the nerve. Less likely, it may have actually been severed.

In the vast majority of cases, the risk of paresthesia lies with injections used to numb up lower back teeth.

The lingual nerve. - 70% of cases involve this nerve. (See above for a list of tissues it services.)

So surgical complications are minor and I should recover - but it sucks not liking food.

they say after a few weeks it usually clears up.

https://www.animated-teeth.com/wisdom_teeth/t7-wisdom-tooth-paresthesia.htm
How long does paresthesia last?

In most cases, a patient's paresthesia will resolve on it's own over time. This can, however, take several months to over a year. In some cases, a person's sensory loss is permanent.

a) As related to wisdom tooth extraction.

Spontaneous recovery.
In cases associated with wisdom teeth, Queral-Godoy (2005) found that most recoveries took place within the first 3 months. At 6 months, one-half of all of those affected experienced a full recovery.

Persistent paresthesia.
Symptoms lasting more than 8 weeks are less likely to fully resolve.

Bleeding should have stopped within 24 hours, no exceptions.

In response to Reply # 50

happens when my tooth brush hits the area that's healing. Just a bit of blood - I could be from the gums back there too , I dunno. Just a bit of blood on the toothbrush - not the bleeding that required gauze like the day of and after the surgery.

I had my first followup and the surgeon said it was healing great.

I'm just worried about my tongue now - I think the gums are healing fine.
