"The Defiant Ones (HBO). "

All episodes are up on HBO Go now. The first one is real dope.

..and that's where that "Fear is a powerful thing" sound byte came from.

That scene where he attests to Nirvana was awesome. I've taken some flack over at the lesson for professing Nirvana so much. Dre's correct....Nirvana are the best rock band of all time.

I am kinda waiting to see why Dre had to share his documentary with Iovine. Feels very Moonlighting/La la Land to me.

Also want to see if they try to skip the Dee Barnes stuff.

But the production value of the documentary is amazing. Looks beautiful.

Also didn't know Will.i.am was so zesty.

http://www.bet.com/music/2017/06/28/dr--dre-1991-assault-dee-barnes.html

Sitting down with Sway in the Morning, Hughes dished out some details on the film and circled back to the violent turn of events where Dre violently attacked Barnes after chasing her into a bathroom. At the 5:45 mark, Sway asks whether Dre would speak to the incident specifically and Hughes confirms not only his acknowledgment, but his apology as well. Revealing that Barnes herself would also be included in the film, Hughes added that Dre would hand her an apology for the situation.

“I wouldn’t have done and he wouldn’t have done it,” Hughes said of the film’s creation had the incident not been included or addressed.

He explained that the apology was already set up after Barnes penned her post-Straight Outta Compton Gawker article. Now fans will be able to hear testimonies from both people involved in the attack on Barnes and an apology from Dre firsthand once The Defiant Ones is released.

Hear what else is to come from the docu-series in the interview below.

... Hughes confirmed that they originally planned on doing separate docs, Jimmy pitched an Interscope doc to HBO right around the same time Hughes had pitched the Dre doc. Then Hughes came up with the idea of combining the two since they are so intricately linked.

Loved his interview on Bill Simmons' podcast. Plus, Iovine was so instrumental in Dre's come up (and keeping a contract in the years between 2001 and Compton) he'd have at least had to be a big part of any documentary on Dre, and he'd keep coming up again and again and again, so as his primary business partner it just makes sense to make any documentary about the both of them, particularly if it's as much about the business side of their careers as the actual music.

I've only watched the first episode - it just seems like they're setting up that these guys needed each other to propel themselves to where they are now, and that they're kindred spirits in a way. I'd love a 4 part series on just Dre, but maybe they thought there was fatigue or something post Straight Outta Compton?

All I could think after that first episode was that SOC would have been much better as a 4-6 hour miniseries, either scripted or in doc form. Lonzo is a character.

The recurring theme between Jimmy and Dre was...making moves based on how something/someone makes them feel.

If only the rest of us could yield such staggering success by acting off emotion in our professional careers. I walked away basically saying these motherfuckers have lived some charmed ass lives.

The doc should have been called "When Keeping It Real Goes Right." On the one hand, Dre has a knack for knowing when to walk away from a bad situation brewing. On the other hand, he's had some great luck with being in the right place with the right people to set himself up for continued success.

Emotions, vibes, feelings, etc

"Keep in mind I'm an artist, and I'm sensitive about my shit" (c)

that's why 99.9% of artists who try to get into business fail

Obviously Dre is that .1% who did manage to walk away from situations he wasn't feeling (multiple times) and even gave everything up (death row publishing and masters) cuz he wasn't feeling it

Suge laughed at him back then
Who's laughing now?

it's based on experiential knowledge. The more expertise and passion you have with something makes your intuition more relevant and accurate. Their "hunches" and educated guesses are much more valid than some random jackass. He's been presented with and developed some crazy talent, but I think he has the knack for understanding how to get the best out of them personally, and how to put them in the best position to blow up via musical ideas, etc.

29. "So Dee Barnes finally addressed"
In response to Reply # 0

While he didn't outright say
"I'm very sorry for assaulting her"
he did sound like an old head regretting dumb shit he did as a youngster (I say youngster compared to now, he was a grown ass man back when it happened)
but there were also hints of PR corporate speak in his "apology"
(in quotes because he addressed it in the general sense)

In his version as I see it, he boils it down to grief over his brother's death, heartbreak over Eazy choosing Jerry Heller over him, and alcohol/drug use

aka he was mad at at the world

I guess this is what it is and that's that, he's not gonna be speaking about it any more

Dee sounded like she's been in therapy and forgives/doesn't forget
Like she said, she's a "footnote in his legacy"
sounds foul

In response to Reply # 29

I mean, Eminem had the line in Guilty Conscience with Dre...you think he DIDNT sign off on that? That was a single!

Anyway, this is probably the last time he'll address it...but he truly did seem sorry, and like he's had a lot of regrets and heartbreak in his career. Woulda been nice for him to say "Hey remember that drunken video about my billionaire status and how I said that was a top 3 embarrassing moment? Doesn't quite hold a candle to beating a woman."

I mean yea, in that moment, in a vacuum, his rage was focused on Dee Barnes. But I think it's fair to point out that his big picture worldview and vast personal issues at the time played a part in how he *dealt* with that rage.

In other words, had all his other shit not been going on he may have screamed at her and embarrassed her instead of beating the shit out of her. Know what I mean.

Like I said, impossible to know either way ... I just don't think it's reaching to come to that conclusion about the situation.

two really engaging documentaries smashed into one, that's cool with me.

shot really interestingly too, especially for a music documentary. I dug all the mixing tricks they used whenever people were talking about mixing, that definitely made the first episode more engaging than it might've been otherwise but it was a neat trick they used a few more times, and they really did a good job capturing ambient sound in general with all the studio and recording footage.

really well done.

tied Part 2 and 3 together real effectively as well as that scene of Dre banging out to Nirvana. captured the rage that was going on inside of him and also how all of that was getting away from Iovine in a way he couldn't necessarily wrap his head around as someone who was, and I like that he admits this, basically taking advantage of these controversies to make more money.

that montage of all of Interscope's artists raising hell was crazy, too - I forgot how fucking weird Manson was to me as a kid since he started getting normalized near the end of the '90s by the big business end of his music.

YES ! That montage was fucking awesome. It was a pretty amazing reminder that hip-hop wasn't the only "villain" in the 90s.

I was underwhelmed. Unless someone can point me to something specific....I don't think any of Iovine's engineering or production work is notable for anything other than the fact he worked with some good artists. He says as much himself in the doc.

Very little nuts and bolts talk. I don't think I learned anything new about Dre except that Nirvana is his favorite rock band. I know I probably represent a niche market but they could have incorporated a LITTLE bit of shop talk. It's really not hard to do with Dre who was the first hip hop producer that the audiophile community took seriously. I remember my first job interview for an audio gig and Dr Dre was probably the only reason I wasn't laughed outta the room when i identified myself as a hip hop producer.

Meh - I don't know. The only thing I can "point to" is his apparent omnipresence over the years. I mean I don't think all these great artists allow him in the room for that many years if he didn't bring *something* to the table.

This I agree with. It was still cool to see all that raw/rare, old footage but I knew most of Dre's story. I, like you, was far more interested in the potential for seeing him at work as we really don't ever get to see anything beyond just *pictures* of him in the studio. His reputation precedes him yet I don't think we've ever actually been presented with video showing him putting in engineering/production work. I know he's a largely private person but like you said, this doc was the perfect opportunity to showcase that kind of stuff.

And that is one of the reasons I keep telling people, this thing could've been 10 hours longer. Ha.

it was clear to me that his ascent in engineering and production was a perfect storm of good fortune and chutzpah, rather than overwhelming technical skills/talent. i think what they established without being too heavy handed was that he had the gift of gab, i.e parlaying the Springsteen song to patti smith and ultimately helping her crossover; having those sort of connector/relater skills that could flourish among the people he found himself interacting with, and being creative in that space, which naturally led to the business side and negotiating the major parts of Interscope's foundational acts out of their massive contract disputes.

all in all, less of a visionary behind the boards and more of a visionary behind the desk.

I figure Dre's love of Nirvana came in retrospect. It's not like he was pumping Nevermind back then. It's that he's pumping now. In a west indian mansion lol.

when i realized Steve Berman was the fat executive from the Dre Day video i had an oh shit moment lol.

another thing this doc is making me realize is how many incredibly layered and interesting people (probably deserving of their own documentaries) were instrumental in the Interscope story. so so so much to unpack.

I'll never forget that face man. I think he even kind of unintentionally quoted himself from that video. He was talking about a meeting he had with Jimmy where Jimmy said "you know what your problem is ..." and I'm like 95% sure he said that same thing to Sleazy-E in the Dre Day video but I haven't gone to check yet.

Anyway I'm glad I'm not the only one to remember that fat dude. Haha. Must be dying the shit out of his hair right ? Pretty sure it was already grey in 1992 ...

Yea man. I'm on a total Dre Family Tree kick now. Listened to No One Can Do It Better and Slim Shady LP both front to back today, now watching the Up In Smoke Tour doc online. Like I've said a couple times in here this doc could be another 10 hours and I'd binge every second of it.

Episode three is fucking flames, but the whole thing is brilliantly produced... yeah, it's hero-worship of the highest order, but these are some genuine musical fucking heroes.

Knew a lot of the Dre side of things already, but I hadn't realised how much of my teenage life was ruled by Iovine. Death Row/Aftermath were the dominant influences on one side of my tastes; NIN, Marilyn Manson, Rancid, No Doubt were the other... my Dad used to play Springsteen and Stevie Nicks and my Mum taught me to love Patti Smith. Only head I didn't really give a fuck about was Tom Petty.

The series really came to a grinding hault by episode 4

I fell asleep a couple of times watching it

Learned a few things, remembered a few I had forgotten

Pretty good series overall. I'll force myself through 4 and try to figure out where the momentum got lost...?
