RE: JAY taking this thing serious.

Seriously makes no sense how serious this brother is right now. Maybe it's because these songs are the B.I.B.L.E. for brothas to get it together and take care of their peoples.

This joint, Smile, and Legacy... PHEW!

in another human, such as Jay, speaks to the potential in all of us. What do we do with a model like that in lace. Do we continue to stand still or make moves to reach a higher place? "The Secret" don't resonate the same with me.

FRFR... This dude went from slingin' dimes and nicks to the place he's in now. Phenomenal.

>like true, hella jews established good credit and bought
>property, but don't ignore the communal aspects of postwar
>jewish america either.

In now way am I looking to contradict you, attack you, or anything like that. Bored at work and just typing out my thoughts.

Not to say he's leading the charge on the communal aspects by rapping about it and taking his other stances like the fight against the justice system and bail, but he's at the forefront seemingly doing his best to show us all how to get shit done. Isn't that to benefit the community in some way, shape, or form?

That leads to the bootstrap nationalism. We have the responsibility to pull us out of the doldrums and through the BS that we know is already set against us. That responsibility is to fight it as many levels as we can especially since we have more financial clot than we ever had. Reshaping our individual and collective paradigms about finances is damned sure one way to uplift the Nation. I'm really getting to the point, as I'm getting older, where my belief about the government being there to do anything for us is a futile one. It's up to us is how I'm really feeling.

As he says on one of the album's songs, "Fuck living rich and dying broke!"

oh okay.

great practical advice.

of course, if i'm getting financial advice from a rap record i already lost. especially if the advice is as vague as this.

it's good rap and i dig the rhyme. it's cool.

it doesn't give a plan of action. it's not intended for that. it's good rap though.

nor as studious nor those who have not been as actively involved in establishing a legacy.

Though intended for everyone to hear. I'm sure there are others, within the larger group, that is specifically targeting these messages for.

using your good credit or decent credit to buy property instead of splurging on some dumb shit is always good advice.

Like I'm not gonna knock a nigga for saying "wisely invest your money so your kids have something to inherit instead of spending it on cars and strippers."

That shit is real.

But the individualistic success that capitalism allows won't elevate the whole community by itself. The communities that have risen up from the margins created safety nets and paved paths to success for their people when the government failed to.

We ended up in a Jewish community in NJ once, and in one strip you had the Jewish deli that served Kosher meat, the bakery that served bagels, the liquor store that sold Kosher wines, and the tailor who was selling dresses and yarmulkes.

That's a very small loop of commerce for a community that many others just don't have because it's not in the culture.

The Jewish dollar is strong and if that's anti Semitic then so be it.

I'll also add growing up with Jewish kids I know they got mad jokes about black people and the natural order of things. Believe that.

They goy conceives the mess
The Jew sells it
The schwarz cleans it up

To paraphrase. Guess who the schwarz is?

i mean, growing up when old heads would try to school us they would often refer to jewish people and behavior not as a way of being down on them.

but rather it was a form of admiration like "the way they do things is a good example of community building and economic empowerment as a group" I still think of all the times I heard "Young man! DID YOU KNOW that a dollar is circulated X times in the jewish community before it leaves said community? We need to be on THAT"

the idea that the Jewish ppl (all of them, as a whole) control the banks and whatnot. the Nazis used it to rile up folks and get them to support or look the other way during the Holocaust.

plus, the shit just ain't true. we're looking in from the outside. most Jewish ppl are just regular folks. if their communities are insular and tend to support each other it's b/c they were locked out of other options. due to anti-Semitism. also, the Jewish ppl are not a monolith. they infight like a motherfucker. not all Jewish ppl can get support from their community. they're like us - they fight w/each other for position. crabs in a barrel.

but that's whatever. the main point is talk about Jewish ppl controlling finance fuels resentment at the Jewish ppl - anti-semitism. and it's not true anyway. the fact that a handful of ppl who happen to be Jewish may be at the top of a few financial institutions doesn't mean that it's fair to say that about all Jewish ppl.

fuck you.

In response to Reply # 45

first of all, I totally hear your points.

but, a very interesting thing or a thing I find interesting regarding jewish people in certain areas of finance is that in the 30s,40s and 50s (and if I can recall even before then, like way way way before that time...) the places where jewish folks went were areas that white folks did not want to fuck with. Jews tried to play the game and tried to take traditional career paths but were barred for reasons('cism), so, they took up boring areas fucking NO ONE cared about. A few decades later these areas exploded and guess who was there the whole time?

So its funny when the paranoid "jews and banking" thing comes up because I always think of the history and how it all went down.

I'm trying to find the source of this I believe it was a planet money break down or some other historical account

Not sure what inspires those lyrics but it doesn't appear to be malicious and even if it were --the majority of Jews who pass for white fully adopt anti-blackness and have since before they began emigrating here.

When black folks were getting beat over the head for the same reasons they were in Germany the ones here by and large said nothing. And in regard to the few small major banks and their banking families that caused the war and financed it -- well... the books are open

I think it was either Muslims or Xtians couldn't charge interest on loans due to their holy text. But the Jewish ppl's text had no such restriction. So Jewish ppl had reason to get into loaning money be they could charge interest and make profit from it.

Of course not all Jewish ppl did this. Just a handful. And it's not right to paint all of them with such a broad brush.

it's definitely for 'them'. it ain't like they're banned from hearing it. he's selling the thing in the pop market. i bet it'll have a clean version for radio.

that dude is about making money off these songs. he will sell them to anyone who will pay. let's not kid ourselves like Jay is making any record 'just for us'. that 'just for us' shit is a marketing tool. it works on us AND them. b/c they get to feel like they're in on something exclusive. that's why i said 'wanna-be down non-blacks'. and that wasn't fair, of course. i did that on purpose. non-blacks who dig this song don't necessarily do so out of any desire to be 'down'. hell, one can't be 'down' just by listening to this song or any song. plenty non-blacks will dig it b/c it's good rap w/a good beat. and that's fine. that's enough. the shit i said up there was just me being cute. i know better than that shit.

But I agree it's marketed to appeal to everyone but at the same time maybe this particular song and ones like it -- not so much? I just think back to when I was in a night club and how the kids were loving the songs that used nigga in the traditional (self destructive) sense but when King Kunta came on? The floor cleared, but hey maybe it's not that danceable.

Either way to them it'll be like 80's Public Enemy at best. Great music with a message many if not all will never understand and that's cool.

hell, that Dead Prez shit...non-blacks ate that shit up.

Public Enemy? white folks love it. i've seen 'em in concert - tons of white ppl in attendance.

and this record is Jay Z. he is a Pop star now. he's been a Pop star since around the time of 'Big Pimpin'. which non-black ppl LOVE(d). and he's married to one of the biggest Pop stars on the planet.

it's no coincidence this is the first single...right after Yonce is coming off a record that's been lauded as a treatise on the Black woman's experience. and white ppl ate that record up. it was a "Black" record. i saw the Formation Tour. lots of white ppl all up in it. LOL

Jay knows what he's doing. by selling this seemingly deeply Black thing...he can hit w/blacks and non-blacks. they love our shit. since they were sneaking into slave cabins to rape us. since they snuck uptown to Harlem for Jazz. and later for Rap and shit.

nothing new.

fuck you.

Bill Maher used 'house nigger' on HBO a few weeks ago during an analogy in part bc he knew his mainstream mostly white audience would get it.

What here is so puzzling to non-blacks? I didn't notice anything but then again I didn't think Yonce's Lemonade was so deeply Black either. Everybody says it is though.

trying to do black on black crime is lame however Lay Z wouldn't dare say that mess to OJ's face. Lay z is more of Sell out than OJ Simpson if you ask me.

corperate trick of the worst order. dead bodies in coffins is how he gets his verses and stacks papers.

dope execution tho.

It also is just surface skimming to me.

I mean We aint just niggas

those depictions were part of the propaganda to justify past enslavement and current racism.

Also rugged individualism is what killed slave revolts and stunted them from becoming revolution.

how do we view ourselves?

I'm nobodies nigga

Been in court with cops tryna lock me up

and guess what from the door they know they ain't dealing with a nigga

Been pulled over in the deep south and they knew they wasn't dealing with a nigga.

But we see ourselves through our enemies eyes and look for their validation.

In those situations, if they sense a 'ignorant nigga' its like sharks and blood.

They will attempt to confuse you, make up shit and just outright disenfranchise you at every opportunity.

That's how I took it. Regarding the visuals I thought it was great how they took something that was meant to be denigrating and used it to artistically portray certain aspects of black reality.

That kid smiling at the camera during the lynch scene for example -- a powerful way to portray the fact they their negative view of us and the justification for it are cultural; starting from a young age.

but Jigga aint Chuck D or Wise Intelligent. it'll still be 'new' to some folks. If he stays on this path, maybe the deeper stuff will appear, but I don't expect that from him.

in the meantime, its jammin and I'll bump it in the whip. we just have to accept that this jay z has at least moved in a good direction instead of the typical immature stuff that a lot of us still enjoy.

In response to Reply # 0

Will it heal the world and immediately rid the world of its racism and bigotry? Of course not. But it gets the conversation going. And for those who feel he doesn't go deep enough beneath the surface....well of course not, he is Jay-Z. When has he ever did that?

But one thing Jay-Z can do besides make music for pop crowds and white folks, is make music for the world. And right now there are people all over the world who believe things are sweet for Blacks in the U.S. because there are multiple Black millionaires and billionaires (i.e. Jordan, Lebron, Oprah, Puffy, etc.) than it is in any country/continent(...except a few countries in Africa of course).

There are those over in Africa who believe Blacks in the U.S. got it made because of the success they see and believe you can transcend the hundreds of years of slavery, racism, and bigotry by getting rich. And if, for some reason, you don't 'make it' then you are just lazy and don't work hard. This song, in accompaniment with the video, kinda puts all of that into perspective. It lets you know, from one of the top rappers in the world, that things are still not so sweet and there are those who will always see him as a nigger. Thus the whole talk 'bout doing for self and building a stronger community for self-reliance comes in.

A conversation to be had and a step in the right direction. Artists never have the answers but they can influence those to want find out and dig deeper. And if enough can be inspired, then eventual change can come about.
