"Games you never beat"

I'm sitting here watching YouTube videos and just learned that Kung Fu for the nes just loops and keeps your score. I got all the way to one hit on the last boss before he flipped everything and took all my life. After that I quietly quit that game.

I also don't know if I've beaten a link between worlds or a link between time. Zelda games endings just don't seem as exciting to me. You get to Gannon and all of that exploration and mystery goes out of the window for pattern observation. It's one of the least interesting parts of the game.

Trying to remember if I beat Mario 2. I feel like I have I remember the end but don't remember the final fight.

You?

I hate Metroid with a passion. Terrible game play, in my opinion.

I could list a grip of old 2600 games here too, but they were all because of the terrible gameplay. One game called "Kangaroo" used to particularly irk me.

I just could never get used to the controls on that game. Plus, it was a rental from Blockbuster so I only had a weekend to play it.

Kid Icarus was another game that used to drive me crazy with the weird controls. Then there were games like Back to the Future for NES that just sucked. Forced-scrolling games suck.

You just may as well turn the game off. Takes 35 to kill her and you'll need the rest for the regenerating tubes. And take that damn Ice Beam with you-there's a reason the game has two of them.

The game ends when the players fifth speeder is destroyed or when the lead walker reaches Ecbo Base, destroying it. As the game progresses, the walkers move more rapidly, increasing the difficulty level.

So basically there isn't an ending.

Plenty of times with two players, though.

Not that I remember the end sequence whatsoever.

I was 17 and staying with my mom and stepdad. He worked nights so that's when I was able to play. Most of the time he didn't notice the ps was on but he always shut me down at some point.

I did manage to get to the last discs of both FF stories at different times and I beat MGS, but both came after several attempts.

Metal Gear can be beaten in a day if you spend all your time on it.

Final Fantasy tho? It took me over 72 hours in game time to beat it, that's because I had to do everything even breed those damn Chocobos so I could get the gold one and travel to the secret location to get the Knights of the Round spell.

If someone would have turned my PS off while I was on the last disc I would have been SICK! Prob would have quit video games all together.

I played that game for months and could never beat it. One night I do. I get all the way to bowser. Have him break the blocks, fall, then the game glitches out and the door to exit never appears. Add that on to when you're in the castle there's no timer. I had to reset the game. I was heartbroken. I beat it again years later.

he always got the new Sonic games within a week of release. I really don't think he even really touched the games til i was over there but we were on a quest to beat this one like we beat Sonic 2 so we're playing for months and can't get past the Carnival Zone

until ONE DAY we finally beat it and make it to Ice Cap (probably the greatest level intro and song in any Sonic game). His mom needed to vaccuum in the room so we hit pause cause we're like, 'we probably need to chill out anyway' cause we were so HYPE.

so she finishes and we go back to play, but the shit had frozen up. We figured she'd hit something when she was in there but talking about it when we were older I think we had been playing for about 8 hours so the system was probably ready to explode

AND it messed up the save.

You could essentially overlay any level with your own.

Platforms, loops, springs, rings, spikes, whatever. You could still add usual game genie style cheats to the mix but the sonic debug mode wasn't just infinite lives or items or what have you.

It's basically a game into itself.

It took about 16 hours and I paused my NES for like 4 of those to go out an play but I did it. That shit fried my AC adapter tho. But I beat a lot of games as a kid that people said were impossible or hard.

Super Metroid is probably all-time top ten, and I've beaten it maybe a dozen times total (including the less than 3 hour run).

but I didn't have enough missiles for the final Metroid Prime boss and never wanted to mine the entire world for the ones I missed. great game for its time, however.

In response to Reply # 0

Both within the same year from 11 to 12.

The first was with an older cousin who have me his Luigi (his older brother had Mario) because he was bored.

So he came back after like 2 levels and I wouldn't give it up. I even offered to switch off levels but he wasn't havin it.

He hit me and I hit him and it was on. I had him pinned in a ground and pound and he got me in the head a few times with a glass bowl of cat food. Put me out for the rest of the day and I'm confident that I got a concussion from that. But hey... It was the principle.

The second was my aunt's friend's kid who I knew from school. He wouldn't give up the controller on Castlevania 3 after he died and threatened to tell his mom about about a fight I had at school. She would have told my aunt, and I was already in trouble for another one and since his mom knew the deal, he knew I'd be fucked.

I went from broke and beat his ass. The little bitch walked home in the middle of the got desert. So I had a fight caught a whoopin over Castlevania but again... It was the principle.

The first summer my cousin got the NES, I couldn't play anytime he was around, which was probably morning til midnight. So, I would play from fuckin midnight to 6, by myself, and hope he wouldn't notice that shit was fire hot when he got there to play in the morning. Even today, I still might not even turn on the Xbone until 1 or 1:30.

Also, because of that, my house rule has always been "No single player games while there's multiple people around." I hate watching other people play games. I have no idea how that shit is a hit on YouTube.

Cousins house which was right near mine. My game, his house. We used to do the winner keeps going and the losers has to hand over the sticks.

They didn't know I studied under Fei Long. I never lost that day. We had like 6 other kids over and they couldn't handle me. Cousin gets pissed and tells me to give him his controller back. Why? I'm still winning. He throws the player 2 controller at me and hits me dead in my chest with it hard. I get up and rock him upside the head. He unplugs the entire snes and storms out of his own room. I grab my game and leave.

We were friends the next day.
I know one thing though, he caught this work IRL too that day

In response to Reply # 92

We had two major arcades that had heavy traffic, but places like the movie theater and bowling alley also had small arcades. I damn near lived in the one at the grocery store, which was by far the most active arcade in town. the guy who owned the machines kept it well stocked with the latest and greatest and if you were there when he was collecting or putting in a new machine, he’d hit you with a grip of credits as well as intel on anything on the horizon.

Anyhow, he had some sort of problem getting KOF 95 but he let me know the bowling alley had it. The bowling alley was dead on the arcade front during school hours so I had plenty of time to myself.

Anyhow this kid I knew from the other arcade showed up one day and was surprised to see me. He kept talking about how there’s usually nobody at the bowling alley during the day, saying things like “aren’t you going to get in trouble for ditching school?” and whatnot. Anyhow dude burns through like two dollars in quarters against my Iori/Terry/Kensou team and he’s getting increasingly pissed and spitting all kinds of shit about me being cheap (I wasn’t), how I was cheating (nope )and making all kinds of excuses from his joystick not working or whatever.

So we switched sides so he could use the “good” stick… .and he got his ass whooped again.

So now he fucking loses it and asks me if I want to “go for real”.

I burst out laughing and asked if he was serious and he was like YEAH YOU THINK YOUR TOUGH CAUSE YOU CAN BEAT ME IN A GAME?

I asked him if he thought he was tough because he had a pony tail, which he did.

So he got in my face and told me “COME ON LETS GO OUTSIDE THEN!”

I smiled and said I was down if he was, but asked him if he wanted to give me all his money now or wait until we got to the train tracks.

He knew what I was referring to and that was the end of that.

my brother was an asshole. We play sports talk baseball and he is about to lose I would just sit and wait for the punch that was going to come. He would throw it and before he could leave I was firing back on him. My mom bought us the NES back in 87. After all the fights she refused to buy us any more systems or games. So we always put our money together to buy our own shit. She hated it. But it was his fault 99% of the time.

so, i don't like RPGs
specifically, i don't like random battles and not being able to visually see my damage progress on whatever i'm fighting

Grandia II changed that so i was down
whenever i do play RPGs or games with leveling, i tend to like to be underleveled as i find that more thrilling and it cuts out a lot of grinding if i can just play tactically

so i get to the eyeball monster thing and i just can't out maneuver it. I need more firepower. Problem is, the game saved right before the boss so i can't leave and go grind so i either have to figure out some kind of way to beat it or restart.

I try on and off for a couple months before i just give up.

i still have my Dreamcast and every once in a while i think about just starting a new game, which i'd imagine would be much easier now.

i think mine was Ninja Turtles 2: Back from the Sewers on Gameboy

actually a really good game back when Konami was dominating with the franchise. i would always get stuck on the level with the floating platforms which i eventually (after a couple years) figured out was a maze level like Bowser's castle in Mario 1.

i remember not even knowing beating a game was a thing until my cousin destroyed Mario 1 in like 15 minutes. Granted the game came out when i was born and it was about 1991 when i was introduced to it and the concept of a video game in the first place.

I mean, I beat it like thirtysomething years ago in the arcade, but this week my nephews are in town from LA, and we're going to an local old school arcade after I get off of work.

He's loved the game the other two times I've brought him there, so I've resolved that we're going to try to beat in today.

I better use Google to remind myself how to do all the moves and shit before I head over.

They switched it out for Contra.

Fortunately, they had it in one of these multi-game "emulator" boxes. It was a lot clunky, but functional.

We ended up beating it. Wasn't pretty, but we did it. And right after winning, the game crashed. Which might just be an issue with the emulator.

I've even come back to it once or twice as an adult, but it almost always ends up with me at roughly the same point with fuck all idea where to go next.

It's one of my favourite games ever too, I've wanted to see the end since about 1993.

You know the part where you go through the town and those big ass monsters with the heart tattoo on their arms walk back and forth, and it takes like ten hits each to murk them?

I got stuck with the torch weapon and I hate that thing. honestly I prefer the sword or javelin but this fucking torch is on some bullshit. The birds pop up and kill me before the flames disappear.

Like, I get the novelty the first time you get it, but it wears off quickly. Shit it too slow for a fast moving game.

Ol ColecoVision ass niggas talking about the boards not setup right.

Modern games:

Snake Eater - Hit that part with man eating sharks and hit that nope button quick as shit.

Witcher 3 - Realized about a third of the way in it wasn't for me after paying $60.

Batman Arkham City - Got to the last board where you had to stealth your way around snipers with a time limit and my PS3 Fat died.

GTA V PS4 - I'm still enjoying the game.

Destiny - Technically beat it but refuse to pay any more for DLC that is going to stop working in a few months after buying it on launch day.

I eventually came to love them since it reminds me of old school videogame hard shit, but those first...hrm...10 hours of them kicking you in the fucking face repeatedly is an aquired taste.

Shit, just this weekend I was trying to finally work on finishing up Dark Souls 3 and I fucked up, got hit ONCE and lost two hours worth of playing. Had to take a long hard pause to not go 1989 and throw the controller, lol.

I just bought it the other night because I was bored. I can say with a reasonable amount of certainty that there's no way I'll finish this game. Not because I don't like it, but because I can tell it's long as fuck and there's endless shit to do.

One thing you have to remember is you don't have to do everything. You'll know which main quest and side quest are important. Some shit like "collect some seeds for this farmer" type of quest can be skipped with no consequence. It's there only if you feel like doing it.

Keep playing though. When you have to deal with a certain Baron is one of the coolest quest chains I've ever played in a game, and some of that part are just side quest that are better than most games main story.

It's almost overwhelmingly complex though with all the collecting and potions and powerups etc etc. I haven't played many RPGs though. I just want to chill and play the story, I dont really care about all this other nonsense about leveling up.

In response to Reply # 123

The game doesn't necessarily operate the same as some other RPGs in terms of levelling, and some of those things that seem really complicated at the start aren't as bad as it seems, you just aren't meant to have access to it so early on. The game doesn't necessarily reward grinding in terms of EXP, progressing the story will always give you better EXP sometimes even if all you had was conversations, whereas some really hard contracts won't give you as much, they're worth doing simply because the quests are so well designed. There's so much stuff over your level in the world when you first enter it can be confusing because certain versions of the same creature can kill you so quickly, there's no point trying to do something that's over level because it won't be worth more.

But if nothing else, focus on the story, their missions will level you enough to progress and it does move along well enough if you don't get pulled away. The main story contains some of the greatest moments I've experienced in gaming/storytelling entertainment period, so definitely try to experience it all once. You'll want to play the expansions after too probably. For awhile I felt like no game will feel like this again.
