"roku vs firestick vs chromecast vs ????"

I already have an apple TV but thinking about getting another device.

Is the firestick still the best option?

I gave up on Apple TV a while ago. The Firestick is great. It's an easy setup and it pretty much operates like a cable box. Voice activated. Its legit !!!

Also, connect it to a VPN which may run you about $10 (or maybe not, either way is ok) and load Kodi on your Firestick and connect. So much free content!

Thats how I got put on and got rid of the Apple TV. I was barely using it anyways so it was that much better to get something that streams that I truly liked.

I have a first gen apple tv. I don't have problems streaming with it so it will be used until it dies.

I want something for another room that may have more options than my 1st gen.

we also have an HDMI adapter so I can plug my iphone in and stream movies or mirror movies directly to the TV thru apple TV.

That shit is awesome.

streaming content isn't illegal according to EU an US law.

Only reason you may need a VPN is to access geoblocked media, which if you're on Kodi you probably have access to anyway.

If true, just choose the interface/price that bests suits you. Of course I don't believe it will every truly go away, what dies is always replaced by something else.

will beef up your thumb strength and test your patience.

But you don't have to use Kodi on Firestick....it's just the preferred device to run it on.

So you can't really say Firestick sucks because Kodi requires a lot of clicking...

Prime that I actually watch now.
And it's come in handy when searching for children's programming where Netflix failed me.
But again, i'm all in on Prime, so I might be a tad biased...
We get everything but gas from Amazon....
If they start a Gas delivery service!?! Shiiiiiiiit, it'd be a wrap. I'd never have to leave home for trivial shit..

In response to Reply # 26

You have to rely on:

the plug in working properly (this can come with it's own set of headaches)

the link that you're streaming from isn't dead or DCMA'd

Based on those two, Kodi can be hit or miss depending on what you're trying to watch and what plug ins you're using. If you click on something and it doesn't work, the cause could be one or the other, or a combination of both. Now with the crack down a lot of links could possibly be DCMA'd.

It won't be for long though cause something is gonna replace it

Firestick/Fire TV is only an option if you have a Prime account and KODI.

Chromecast is great if you have another Android device. It plays almost anything.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

roku has the most channels, if you don't have cable get a password from a friend.

you can cast videos from any tablet/smart phone or universal plug and play your personal collection over the network from any computer/server. play movies off a thumb drive.

the roku app is great, can be your remote when you can't find it and cast photos from your phone. play sound through headphones attached to your remote or phone. you can do voice search if you get the more expensive ones.

In response to Reply # 0

I have an old school Roku but streaming like you can on Kodi is not happening. Used to use this channel that needed you to run an app on your computer to stream like you can on Kodi, don't remember the name.

Replaced the Roku with a Nexus player in the living room a while back. Definintely enjoy it more than the Roku, especially because of Kodi. Use it to play emulators too.

I am eyeing the Shield TV since you can use Amazon Prime Kodi and play emulators on it. Curious about games designed for it too. The cost has been too much to go for it though.

Unless there is a way to use something like Kodi directly with Roku I would go with an Android TV model (fire, shield or whoever else is selling them).

If you are doing everything legit then Roku will be a good option.

Especially if you're able to hardwire it with an Ethernet cable. No matter how strong or stable you think your wifi signal is, you'll eventually experience buffering or glitches at some point. Plus streaming video will strain your wifi bandwidth if you want to multitask.

Since I upgraded to the latest Roku and hardwired it, I've never waited for anything to load. Videos from every source open instantly in full HD and never need to buffer.

We use it heavily. Netflix, HBO Go, Showtime Anytime, Youtube, Amazon Video, and a slew of kids' channels for our son. I don't see how we could live without it.

redundant I guess.

I have Amazon prime and I have passwords for cable/netflix/hulu/sling/HBO etc and I feel like I pretty much have everything I really need but I'm not a big tv watcher I haven't had cable in like 10 years.

The adage of if something seems too good to be true, it probably is smacking me right in the face as I read that website.

Also, that logo is truly a turn off, but I guess there are folks of a certain ilk that wouldn't be bothered by the resemblance at all.

Put LibreELEC (Kodi OS) on it and that's my best Kodi device in the whole house.

That's if you just want Kodi. It you want a nice legit interface too, then....fire stick.

you're gonna go all-in with apps, etc...FireTV is the better bet. I thought my firestick was untouchable until I put Playstation VUE on it realized it def. has it's limitations. HBO Go & individual apps run fine on the Fire Stick...but if you're going to be doing something like Hulu, Playstation VUE, DirecTV Now (not sure if it's on firestick or not)...you MIGHT have some choppy experiances on the Fire Stick vs the Fire TV.

Also, I think you have more gaming options on the FireTV .

spmc on there.

added covenant, smoothstreams(paid), salts, specto & got a RD account(paid).

i really only use covenant and smoothstreams though. i keep seeing a lot about bubbles but haven't tried it yet.

so far so good, i am pretty sure i'm gonna shutdown my usenet and plex download set up in favor of this. if so... i'll cop the new fire tv which i am guessing will prolly drop next month.

i mean if it's not broke don't fix it.

a lot of folks on reddit still rocking with it even if it isn't being maintained

i had it and covenant but deleted it since i've been able to find everything i need in covenant.

but for me the make or break for this was getting RD and alluc so I get hd. must have for me.
