I haven't been with my employer long, nor do I come from a place where you see black folks in high level positions. When a sister here was promoted to VP...I was proud as hell. I wanted to congratulate her but she's very stand offish...
I get the "value" thing; however, some of us are happy to see niggas make it. speaking as a sister who ain't used to seeing it...
be careful on your way up. there can be a lot of illusions.

She must follow your philosophy because I *never* see her chopping it up with any of the black coworkers, but will strike up a random conversation with a white coworker about the plant on his desk or what flavor Starbucks he's drinking, but will pretend I don't exist if we are alone in a hallway or elevator.
Ironically, the few black men here tend to be the more skilled employees with positions and higher salaries to match.

I don't think we should go out of the way to acknowledge each other SOLELY because of our skin color. I most certainly don't want to be looped in with anyone else's nonsense, especially if we don't work together closely. Sadly, it can easily happen simply because we are the same skin color, and people notice that we go out of the way to acknowledge each other. I get paid to provide a service to this company, that's it, that's all. I have zero co-worker friends, and I'm totally fine with keeping it that way.
