"What do B, C and D level rapper do during the day time?"

The folks who have some dough but arent exactly in the spotlight...what TF is their day to day?

Lil B, Mims, etc

Its kind of a weird obsession I have, I always look up a formerly hot rapper's wiki page and see if anything is there for 2016 and on.

Most of the time, its nothing.

They just chilling at the pad, doing...nothing? Raising babies?

about 16 years ago when I lived in long beach i had a neighbor who had a kid, that kid had a cousin who lived with them and the kid would always say

"My cousin daddy is Mc Ren! You ever heard of Ren? Thats his daddy"

I used to think "oh bullshit, whatever kid, you just talking"

Until

One day I was leaving the apartment complex and I walk right past Ren who was wearing a full on UPS uniform.

and drink a lot.

Like that's part of the reason we got a bunch of rappers (not all) dying in their 40s.

Also think that there is probably a long list of rappers who could have been bigger if they put the drugs and alcohol alone.

Also seems to me like the biggest names also seem like the rappers who rap the least about smoking and drinking all the time. Like Jay-Z, Drake, 50 Cent don't really talk about smoking and drinking THAT much compared to other rappers.

it's all downhill.
The guys you named aren't exactly the most creative rappers out there. As amazing of a rapper Jay-Z is, he can't write a cool story rap to save his life. Drake's creativity level is very, very questionable. 50 Cent, another guy who lacks creativity. His sound played out, then his brand died. His money has kept him relevant all these years, his music is rarely EVER discussed anymore because he's been unable to re-invent himself.

But I'm with you on the "many of these guys are probably sitting around smoking and drinking all day". That I do agree with.

some have a home studio and just record shit
some are still working behind the scenes

rapper who ever rapped, even in the 80's, fits into one of these groups:

1. Still raps
2. Deceased
3. In jail

And that's really the only three categories. Like, my boy told me Skee-Lo worked at a Call Center with him, and that he lived in Leimert Park. I said cool, he's living well enough. Then, this promoter hired me for a club night, and without telling me, put me on the flyer that said "Skee-Lo brand new album release party!!!" I said........he still raps??

And in L.A? Literally ALLLL of them still rap and make new music. Yes, 2nd II None, AMG, even Mr. Tan who had the 2nd verse on "Baby Boy" with Snoop and Tyrese. Domino too. They ALL still perform and try to get folks to buy their new music.

Now...some are sadly still pushing drugs. But even a lot of current "hot" rappers make more money from pushing dope than music. Some just get their few thousand to perform at a club, but they don't all make like major tour money. A lot of rappers end up arrested for dope sales. Then, those like Rappin 4-Tay have been doing damn robberies, probably because they're hooked on drugs.

SHIT...y'all remember Rufus Blaq??? He's still writing! My young boy is 24, and told me, "I wrote a song for a singer with this dude named Rufus who claimed he was big 20 years ago."

I said....wait, Rufus Blaq? Then I said..........that shit was 20 years ago???

He worked there 20 years from age 16 .....

So he gets a check from that and he till dj parties ....

Funny I saw his old DJ today and he was on his way out of town to do a show.

Just because we don't see them on TV don't mean they not making a living off hip hop and hey sometimes you gotta get that regular job for insurance, etc...

especially when you got a family to take care of..

its reasonable to say that MOST of the rappers out are working somewhere else because we know they not BALLIN like that ....

I assume tons of b/c level artist are doing well just being artists, even if they aren't as popular.

Who really knows Oddisee? He's not on TV or radio like Lil Uzi but I know he does well from touring worldwide and making music because being an artist is a viable gig regardless of mainstream success

When in the golden years it was album sales and club appearances. Now its albums with pretty low overhead + independently released and a solid ass touring schedule to make the scratch

They ain't buying maybach's. But I saw oddessee a year ago and he was talking about some of the things he did since the last album/tour cycle and he wasn't working at Mcdonald's, lol. Plus you gotta figure that as a touring performer an MC has a relatively low overhead as opposed to a 4 piece band+instruments...

Lotta people are doing fine doing the exact same thing they were doing when they were in the zeitgeist...

Shows.. appearances...recording... (hopefully investing) etc...

I'm sure its harder for the 90s artists who didn't make that "one" they can always perform and don't get publishing.

Overseas bread is still real money too lol...

Before a dude I knew got heavy into ghostwriting, he did HVAC at night and studio work during the day. I think a lot of dudes tangentially related to had varying periods of "Fuck a job, Dre/Antwan/Rico/Carlos just got paid." and "Shit, I gotta get shit poppin'!"

I think, in the days of huge money deals, niggas didn't really stress about having to have 4000 revenue streams, until the album flopped and they had to recoup.

I've seen everybody from Nappy Roots to Rakim in those type settings, a lot of them go the "celebrity DJ" route too which is popular now, I think Biz was probably one of the first to do that but a lot of others have followed suit. You don't even have to perform, just show up, talk on the mic and play some music. For those that have hustle there are a lot of ways to get bread.

In response to Reply # 51

Did it around the end of 2016. We talked about everything from his current position with the Warriors, to his history coming up and putting in work as a member of All Natural, to working the salary cap, to visiting the White House, to the current President, to music he's working on, to what it was getting dissed by Ghostface Killah on record and then clapping back on wax.

I freely admit to marking out a bit during this interview (and consequently talking a little fast at times), and cap's mic is a little jacked.

this weekend it's this:
