"Suit Shopping: what fit yall rockin'?"

i've been clicking around online doing some window shopping and was curious what fit yall are purchasing.

slim?

traditional?

tailored?

what's the difference between traditional fit and tailored fit?

obviously i know take a suit to a tailor and get it fitted just right, but generally speaking what's your starting point?

I just bit the bullet and had all of them made from scratch at a local tailor. Went and got measured, chose my materials/colors/style and rocked on. I went for fitted/slim on most of them. If you find a local tailor you'll find you would pay less than what you would if you went somewhere like Men's Warehouse to get a custom suit done.

I usually buy off the rack and then I bring it to a tailor

about to start a new gig in a week and wearing a suit will be mandatory and already had 2 suits that were slim fit and the rest were tailored. I just don't like the tailored look anymore for me

i know tailoring can get costly, but then you'd have a whole rack of suits to choose from if it's possible to do that.

some folks were saying that it would be hard to do since in most cases, it's almost like a total restructuring of the suit which even if an expert tailor was able to do, it might end up costing u the cost of a new suit... most were saying take the L and buy new....

but for an official answer, go see a tailor and he/she will be able to tell u if it's feasible or not... and you'll see if it's worth it or not

on any suit, regardless of the fit (traditional, sport, slim). I'll rock a traditional cut suit, having the sides of the jacket tapered in a bit and slight or mid break on the pants. Single breasted or a 3 piece is my usual. I have no problem with a double breasted suit, but they aren't really en vogue and I won't go out of my way to find one (but if I do see one that fits and I like I wouldn't be averse to wearing it)

started to realize I really didn't like "extra" material. I started first with zero break on the pants...and loved it. The first time I got a truly fitted suit, I was worried it would be uncomfortable to wear for an extended period...but, it really feels good on me. You're right, it's not for everyone. You have to REALLY be cool with your body AND cool with people looking at you...I guess, comfortable in your own skin, so to speak. Not a brag or anything, either. The first time I wore a suit, this style, I could "feel" people looking at me. It draws eyes...just does.

walking past this family after having walked my wife to the car. One of the young ladies was looking at me from head to toe. I was rocking a blue chambray-colored cotton and linen slim fit suit with a white dress shirt, yellow/cream/blue/orange silk pocket square, yellow socks and my brown (w/ green and yellow paint splatters)Warhol-inspired Ferragamos.

Shordy said, "Damn! The old head looking slick." Her mom then said, "Yeah! Like a snack!"

I bust the fugg out laughing and just KIM.

Working on trimming down the middle-aged mid-section so my slim stuff fits even better.

I'll probably never go back to the extra material. It ain't '99 no mo.

As long as the basics of the suit fit right (i.e. Not swimming in fabric when the jacket is buttoned, but no "x at the chest" either. No bunching or rumpling at the shoulder - see this for examples: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/8f/26/c4/8f26c45928ebd897414c2d76d09e3035.jpg), the rest can be tailored within reason.

there aren't much options that really look good off the rack, even with a good tailor. I'm 6'6", 330 lbs. So I end up paying a tailor a large amount to get what is still a pretty relaxed fit.

I'm 6'6" 205, and the big & tall stores I've been to don't even carry waist sizes small enough for me.

traditional is too much material and generally ill fitting.

some will have stretchy material to make them more comfy.

In response to Reply # 0

I've never owned a suit in my life but have been thinking about getting one recently. I talked myself out of it for now though. I MIGHT wear a suit once or twice a year. Too little to justify the cost. Eventually I'm going to have to look like an adult somewhere though.

Decided it was finally time, and got a midnight blue jacket and black trouser in their "modern fit" (confirmed that this was a decent look when I found a pic of Daniel Craig in the combo). Quality was well above rental tux quality, and I only needed to get the pants hemmed up as far as tailoring: https://combatgent.com/tuxedos

I haven't sampled their suits yet, but if the tux is any indication, you'd be good.

Currently have a gray pinstripe Paul Stuart that I found at a Housing Works for a hundred, and a blue cotton Hickey that i got off of Gilt. Those are of a higher quality than the tux. But I've also owned my fair share of department store suits, which the CG are better than. And it's definitely higher quality than anything I've rented.

Bottom line: not super high end, but not After Eight, either.

The use functional button holes on the sleeves for some dumbass reason.

So it's really hard (and prohibitively expensive) to adjust the sleeve length.

I got an indochino once and I wasn't really feeling it. Maybe I messed up my measurements a bit, but it wasn't fitting right at all. I returned it and didn't try again

61. "My latest suit came from Suit Supply"
In response to Reply # 31

I'm pretty happy with it.

I needed a medium grey slim fit (not too skinny) and the Lazio was the perfect cut off the rack. They didn't have the right color though, so I had to do the design your own option for an extra hundred or so. If I'd gone off the rack it would have been $500 but with the DYO option it came out to $650 or so. But that's still less than a Hugo Boss suit off the rack, and it's slightly higher quality.

Ultimately, Suit Supply is great because of the sheer number of different cuts, details, and fabrics to choose from. And most of their off the rack cuts are slim and pretty modern, so you can't really go wrong. And the sales guys are well trained...it feels like a consultation and collaboration when you're figuring out what you want, not like they're trying to sell you something.

traditional would kind of be like off the rack i guess..

tailored would be more fitted...

I cant rock a slim fit suit because it would look like I got my little brother suit on...
