Ice cube designed a torch and lit it.

Kendrick has been passed a torch and carried it further.

I don't know....has Kendrick broken any new ground? From what I've heard....it's more like he's really, really good at things that have already been done.

I don't listen to hip hop anymore.

I was checking out that guy Gotye recently (the 'somebody that I used to know' dude). I'm late on him....but I'd say he's breaking new ground in sampling technique and editing. His music is DENSE. I find myself asking 'exactly how many HOURS did it take for him to do this?' In the same vein...that guy Kutiman also broke alot of ground in 2009 regarding sampling technique and conceptual framework. I mention those two guys specifically just I just found this today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opg4VGvyi3M&index=2&list=PL206FAB4860E9B9E7

It's Gotye doing a tribute to Kutiman. In anycase....those two guys have opened up new artistic avenues imo.

In terms of rap lyrics...I have no idea. But I'm sure someone's doing it without my knowing.

Let's face it...most of us like Kendrick cause he's a bit of a throwback. Ice Cube wasn't a throwback. Kendrick's obviously better and more sophisticated if you disregard context. But that's like comparing Eddie Van Halen to Chuck Berry.

just sounds like he took sampling from hip hop and applied it to a new genre.

Though it has played a major role in the evolution of sampling. As a genre....far more than any. There's no doubt Gotye was influenced by hip hop. But he was also influenced by Jean-Jacques Perrey, Delia Ann Derbyshire, musique concrete, jamaican dub....all of which pre-date hip hop and were sampling, looping, recontextualizing pre-existing music.

Check out his stuff. I'm not too keen on the singing and lyrics but the music is highly impressive.

I've justified this by the pop songs making him side money that gives him the freedom to make whatever album he wants (though DAMN is his most pop friendly LP to date)

he damn near birthed killer mike - and jeezy

i still marvel at the fact he managed to release the music / content that he did WHEN he did

he even preceded 2pac @ bangin on the system

he really is unsung

that he doesnt make it into more top fives is nuts imo

are you truly baffled, or is that just hyperbole? I take it you don't care much for Kendrick, which is no crime. I know several people who don't. That said, are you honestly not able to see how he could have large following?

It's basically impossible for any rapper to check off all the checkmarks that Cube did. Hell, even you mentioning the Riots...the time that Cube was dominant was almost tailor made for him to become a legend. From the Riots, to gangbangin being at peak, to the crack era still showing effects. Kendrick's era and generation alone is way different.

Cube def has more "money" tracks, whether for radio or the club, but this is 20-25 years later, and for the kids, Kendrick has more than enough anthems for them to rock to. You ever seen how hype they get for MAAD City? Or right now with Humble? Or Alright? I am native enough to say it...Cube's never had any songs that made the entire nation get that hype. Now in L.A., with a 35, 40+ crowd, of course How to survive in South Central and No vaseline go OFFFFFF, but take them outside of L.A. or even Texas (where they love him) and the reaction won't be the same.

Predator was the beginning of the end for Cube's run, but that album gave him his two nationwide anthems.

than anything Kendrick has. I'm really just speaking from a club/concert high energy perspective...Cube's hits were in that laid back 90's L.A. style, vs the jump up and down type shit that Kendrick and all the new music is.

But yeah, I agree that Kendrick doesn't have nearly as many radio hits, especially not for L.A. folks

In response to Reply # 27

In 1992, hip-hop wasn't nearly as accepted in the mainstream as it is 25 years later. Back then, it was songs that sounded like "Can't Touch This" or "Ice Ice Baby" or "Rico Sauve" that got run on daytime radio throughout the country. Now, because of in part to the framework built by Ice Cube and his contemporaries, hip-hop is multi-billion dollar industry and hearing hip-hop nationwide on daytime radio isn't so odd. So saying, "Cube didn't have songs back then that were as popular as 'Alright'" ignores context.

perspective, at clubs and concerts.

"It was a good day" and several other songs Cube had were much bigger hits than what Kendrick made. But when I think "anthem" I think more so songs that artists do at shows that get the energy all the way up. "It was a good day" is actually more transcendent than a regular anthem. I said it in my first post, Cube has more "money tracks" for sure, but just that none of his songs were aimed to get folks hype, and that's just a result of what that era was about. And even then, "anthem" is subjective.

Closest he got was "Jackin 4 Beats" and, well, "We Be Clubbin." Different era and whatnot.

As for concert anthems, I've been to a few Cube concerts in my time, and I can say from my personal experience, he had always had a few consistent cuts that always got the crowd HYPED. Like, majorly. Don't know if that's what you're referring to.

the fact that people would still be willing to discuss this shows how great Kendrick is... Kendrick doesn't have to to be your number 1 or even in your top 5... But if you're not even discussing him in your top 10 for what he's done in his career, the quality of music and consistency, then you're just being close minded... That's my opinion...

Kendrick working with pop aritsts doesn't hurt his brand/message at all... That's like saying Malcom X doing an interview with Playboy dampened his message... Kendrick can go do a song with Taylor Swift and then perform Blacker the Berry on the Grammys...

We should appreciate this run while it's happening and he's around...

mainly cuz of his singing and his vocal changes sort of annoy me. When he's straight rapping he can be dope as shit tho, beats are usually solid and he's one of the best out now. I prefer Lupe for current rappers but its close.

One of the biggest things I respect Kendrick for is he has not sold out for a cheap radio single the way other popular rappers from Eminem to Jay to Nas have done. Songs like Humble, Alright, etc aren't the typical cater to the white teens Club type stuff. I would be the closest but still that had a message and don't feel its in same category as a Just Lose It or You Owe Me.

Cube had his time.
Kendrick is having his time.

The simplicity of our old school heroes', aside from Rakim, rhyme schemes don't even get them in the room with Kendrick.

Shorty is tough and it shouldn't be denied. The comparisons to folks from yesteryear are unnecessary and futile.

Did Cube run his era? Debatable!
Is Kendrick running his era? Debatable! (I think he's the best to have come out in the last decade.)

But old heads, let's cut it. Let the young gawd breathe and be great!

Kendrick doesn't have that yet.

So, it's a tough one.

The young bol spits his tail off. Cube was better than nice but wasn't exceptional in my opinion. At that time, there were others being hailed as the best.

Kendrick, IMO, has no real peer at the moment.

Allowing for space is one thing but when people dismiss what the old greats accomplished that's going too far.

Kelis discography is better than Nas.

Ice Cube is overrated.

Rick Ross passed the legends.

the convos aren't normally honest. typically, old heads aren't checking for much beyond their favs. younger folks aren't typically going back to listen. there will be some exceptions, but that's why you'll get MC Ol' Skool is overrated or MC 2014 is the greatest ever.

Ain't nothing new under the sun.

We've seen five or six generations of rappers come through. Well, if you've been around since the beginning.

There may be a GOAT of each generation but there can not be an overall GOAT.

That being said, I need to stop saying it and/or thinking it.

Right now, Kendrick is in a lane and groove all by himself. I dig it!

Kendrick is a dope emcee, though not clear (no defining cause). Kendrick's important to some, but he's not changing the national conversation and artform in the way Cube did.
