"Catered meals were nothing more than a slice of bread and cheese, with a salad garnish for good measure. As night fell, the situation became even more chaotic, as festival staff and security were nowhere to be found. Luggage was thrown out of the back of a truck to an awaiting mob. There were reports of feral dogs running loose through the festival grounds, and some attendees allege to have gotten into verbal and physical confrontations with locals."

Ja Rule and a rich dude got gassed up in between lines of coke at a hollywood party because they thought they figured out a missing niche in the hot (but already cooling down) festival market by making a festival for rich people

They got some early investors who were old ass white dudes who don't know better because Coachella is already expensive and rich as fuck. Those 400 dollar tickets at list price ain't going for that price after it sells out in two minutes on stub hub on top of all the other bells and whistles that Urban Outfitters sells you as the Coachella experience(fat rental pad! after parties! high end beach fashion!). Rihanna and the Kylie Jenner don't regularly show up as non-performers because they got good fish fry, they are there for that high grade rich people partying coke.

Anyway, all those early conference calls with bookers were going great and they signing some solid acts and then...

...they realized that security, infrastructure, etc..cost money. So now you start skimping on shit because anything overseas is a premium. You go with unknown dudes on the US side who make promises but even then that gets expensive so those dudes make a deal with...

...some local dudes who they never met that promised to deliver the goods at a quarter of the costs. Sure, you could do ya due diligence but fuck it, its in the islands and smiling island guys are never lie, ain't you seen Cool Runnings? During all this all those phone calls are still going great even though acts aren't getting paid and a few of the low level hires know shit is fugazi but they ain't saying shit cause nobody wants to be THAT nigga.

Which leads us to Ja-Rule once again getting clowned across media even after the 50 cent era.

so it's very obvious on multiple levels
that this was planned to be a failure.

http://pagesix.com/2017/04/28/doomed-fyre-festival-organizer-no-stranger-to-failure/?_ga=1.142750709.1991833558.1493464563

Music fest organizer no stranger to failure
By Mara Siegler April 28, 2017 | 2:37pm

The disastrous Fyre Festival isn’t Billy McFarland‘s first endeavor to go up in flames and leave customers fuming.

In 2014, the college dropout created Magnises, which started out as a card designed to resemble American Express’ Centurion — or black card — but tied to members’ checking accounts and morphed into a concierge service that didn’t deliver on its promises.

Those who made plans on the app, buying hard to get tickets for events, concerts and even the play “Hamilton,” along with restaurant reservations and flights, had things fall through at the last minute. Membership fees cost $250 for the year.

Business Insider reported that “each time, just before the show (often the day before the event or even the day of) a representative for Magnises would send an email explaining that the startup would no longer be able to provide the purchased ticket and offer to help reschedule the seat for another date.”

In addition, “Three of the former members we spoke with said they were asked to delete negative tweets by customer service reps who explained the mix-ups by saying that Magnises was still a startup working out the kinks of its business.”

Similarly, some Fyre Festival attendees did not get their confirmation until the day before and they have been consistently deleting negative comments on their Instagram.

Magnises also offered a trip to Cuba, with one attendee telling the website, “It was one week before the trip to Cuba, and I still had no information. But then we get an email that the trip was canceled.” The rescheduled excursion was then again canceled and the former customer got their money back by reporting it to their credit card company.

McFarland also ran into trouble with a $13,000 apartment he rented on Greenwich Avenue in the West Village for card members to hang out at. He was sued by the owner, who claimed he threw “blowout parties” and “maliciously vandalized” the space, racking up more than $62,000 in damages. At the time, McFarland called the claims not valid.

Ja Rule worked with McFarland on Fyre.

Account from a woman who was (briefly) working as a talent producer for the fesitval. She realized quickly that it was a disaster. Ja's quote makes him sounds like an insufferable douche. Last line is killer too.

http://nymag.com/thecut/2017/04/fyre-festival-exumas-bahamas-disaster.html

I Worked at Fyre Festival. It Was Always Going to Be a Disaster.
By Chloe Gordon

In early March, a friend of mine texted me to ask if I wanted to be a talent producer for the Fyre Festival. I’d never heard of it, but the gig involved going to the Bahamas and being paid extremely well. So I said yes and packed my bags. The festival was supposed to be a luxury music retreat where elite millennials could mingle with “influencers” and models. Tickets cost between $1K and $125K, gourmet food and accommodations were promised. I was planning to spend the next two months working on the festival, but a mere four days after I arrived I was back on a plane to New York because the whole thing, as everyone now knows, was a complete disaster. I was briefly involved in the planning of the event and got a front-row seat to chaos.

On March 14, I flew from Miami to the island of Great Exuma to get the planning started. I was excited, at least at first. Flying in, the water looked beautiful — but I was almost immediately warned not to go near it because of a rampant shark problem. That was an omen I regrettably missed.

After we landed, we drove to the festival site to assess our goods. When we arrived, my initial reaction was “huh.” This was not a model-filled private cay that was owned by Pablo Escobar. This was a development lot covered in gravel with a few tractors scattered around. There was not enough space to build all the tents and green rooms they would need. There was not a long, beautiful beach populated by swimming pigs. There were, however, a lot of sand flies that left me looking like I had smallpox. Still, I had hope.

My job as a talent producer was to coordinate travel and on-site logistics with the artists who would be performing: Blink 182, Major Lazer, Disclosure, among others, had already signed on. I would be working with an 11-person team and a few of the festival executives. The production team was all new hires and, before we arrived, we were led to believe things had been in motion for a while. But nothing had been done. Festival vendors weren’t in place, no stage had been rented, transportation had not been arranged. Frankly, we were standing on an empty gravel pit and no one had any idea how we were going to build a festival village from scratch.

Pending disaster aside, I started working from an island rental house. I contacted the booked artists’ tour managers to start to coordinate. Almost all of them had the same question for me, which was along the lines of, “Hey … Where’s our money??” I tried to email the business manager to get an answer, who said something like “stand by” for three days in a row. By the end of the week it became clear they would not pay the people they owed.

On Wednesday, Ja Rule arrived for a “site visit.” I don’t know if he actually visited the “site” but he did spend a lot of time on a yacht, according to his Instagram. Meanwhile the event planners were holed up indoors putting together a game plan and a budget. With so little having been prepared ahead of time, the official verdict was that it would take $50 million to pull off. Planners also warned that it would be not be up to the standard they had advertised. The best idea, they said, would be to roll everyone’s tickets over to 2018 and start planning for the next year immediately. They had a meeting with the Fyre execs to deliver the news. A guy from the marketing team said, “Let’s just do it and be legends, man.”

At this point it was pretty clear that this was a mess and I shared my concerns with the man I reported to. But he assured me that the Fyre execs were legit, and said some socialite was underwriting the whole thing. The budget was okayed and we were told to carry on with our planning. That night Ja Rule gave a toast. “To living like movie stars, partying like rock stars, and fucking like porn stars.” If Ja Rule is punished for anything perhaps it should be that.

Still, we proceeded. Thursday night we flew to Miami where we would work with a fully functioning internet connection. The artists still hadn’t been paid. It was my job to try and be charming while explaining to tour managers that no, there still was no money or a technical director for the festival. There was, somehow, a secured alcohol sponsor, however. This whole thing was playing out as a hilarious disaster. It was clear to most of us that nothing was going to come together at this rate.

The next day, things really started to fall apart. On Friday, lots of people on the production team got fired. I did not get fired. I did get a phone call that same night that said something along the lines of, “Congratulations, the guys will allow you to continue to work on the festival! For two thirds of what you asked for. And we’re not paying the artists yet.” So with that, I quit. I told the tour managers I had been in contact with that I was going to take myself off the project. And then I flew back to New York and waited eagerly for six weeks to see how Fyre Festival would play out.

Then yesterday, to my dark delight, the rug was pulled out from under them. In the morning headliner and all-around relevant band in 2017 Blink-182 pulled out, citing sub-par production standards. Last night the festival evacuated almost everyone off the island on account of they didn’t have food or tents for anyone (minor details). Today, after a wild night of #fyrefestival terror broadcast on social media, Fyre announced the festival would be indefinitely postponed.

I cannot explain how or why the bros running this festival ignored every warning sign they were given along the way. The writing was on the wall. I saw it firsthand six weeks ago. They overlooked so many very basic things. And baby, they forgot to make me sign an NDA.

They make it look like Ja Rule was the main promoter which everyone should call bullshit on immediately.

And, according to some of the reports, that guy has a history of bad deals so no one should really be surprised.

I seriously doubt that the Fyre Festival would've happened even if the Bahamas didn't have inclement weather. Did you see the festival grounds? I don't think the organizers even tried to pull this off.

This is basically the KONY 2012 of music festivals.

Too long to swipe, but yeah, they decided to do it on the last minute (October 2016, no way to pull off a major festival on a six-month turnaround time), spent all their money on early promotion, lied to investors and attendees, and didn't realize how hard it would be, how much time they needed, and how much it would cost to set up the necessary infrastructure. Such a fascinating fiasco.

No word on Ja

https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/03/06/591366152/fyre-festival-promoter-billy-mcfarland-pleads-guilty-to-fraud

Concert promoter Billy McFarland, who promised to stage a "life-changing" Caribbean music festival in the Bahamas last year and instead presided over a fiasco, pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud and faces up to a decade behind bars.

A contrite McFarland admitted in a Manhattan federal court that he had defrauded 80 investors and falsified documents to secure more funds to put on the 2017 Fyre Festival.

"I deeply regret my actions, and I apologize to my investors, team, family and supporters who I let down," he said as quoted by the Associated Press.

The two counts of wire fraud each carry a maximum of 20 years in prison. But under the plea agreement, McFarland likely would face a sentence of eight to 10 years, and a fine of up to $300,000.

The Fyre Festival was promoted as a two-weekend event on the island of Great Exhuma with an opportunity to see big name acts, live in luxury accommodations and eat gourmet food. Instead, customers expecting to see Blink-22 and the hip hop group Migos arrived on the island to learn that some acts were cancelled and that they would be lodging in leaky tents and served cheese sandwiches. The reaction by angry concert-goers on social media turned the event into an embarrassing failure.

McFarland, whose concert scheme grew out of a digital application for event promotion, admitted in court that he was out of his league.

"I grossly underestimated the resources that would be necessary to hold an event of this magnitude. In an attempt to raise what I thought were needed funds, I lied to investors about various aspects of Fyre Media and my personal finances. Those lies included false documents and information," he told U.S. District Judge Naomi Rice Buchwald.

McFarland also pleaded guilty to lying to an unnamed ticket broker to persuade him to buy $2 million for a block of advance tickets to Fyre festivals that would be staged in the future.

"In addition to prison time, McFarland and Fyre Media face more than a dozen civil suits and an ongoing bankruptcy liquidation of the company, as investors and ticket buyers try to recover some of their losses," Bloomberg reports.

McFarland's sentence is scheduled for June 21.
