how do deep/old-school fans of "The Boss" feel about "Dancin In The Dark"

because I'm somewhere in the middle about it

Lionel rested on his laurels but I'll allow no ill spoken on his first two albums away from the Commodores, especially the first... that's a classic

I think most would agree that Bruce is a better lyricist but that's about it. I haven't seen either perform live but there might be an argument that Bruce is a better stage performer too. But after that...Lionel beats him in every other category. Most importantly, songwriting.

I never got on board with the Boss and yes that led to many uncomfortable moments in the NY/NJ/PA area but dude brings the thunder live. I also think he's been able to adapt over time better the Lionel, who seems pretty stuck in time. I like both guys out of respect more than anything and enjoy LR's music a little more (especially the Commodores) but "objectively" I would say the Boss is better and has held up better.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

>da fuck is Chicago doing these days?

Some of the new guys in Chicago have been in the band longer than some of the original members were. And I can't name a single one of 'em. They're basically a tribute band playing their own songs.

I seen some iteration of
>Fleetwood Mac is going on tour. Of course Hall & Oates selling

Yep. I can honestly say, I have NO desire to see H&O live. I'd watch a special though.

I mean even funky ass mainstream bands like EWF and Kool & The Gang put some iffy stuff. You mentioned Stevie, I mean, I got eight words man: I Just Called to Say I Love You.

All that bickering aside, I agree with you. Lionel Ritchie boring as shit to me.

1. We all saw Hi Fidelity.

2. Stevie had been that corny since the 60s. My Cherie Amour. Take Up a Course in Happiness, Village Ghetto Land, Have a Talk With God, Ngegicula (or whatever), the entire Secret Life of Plants album.....

3. Corny/sappy songs are part of what make Stevie great. Love makes us feel all of that corny shit and Stevie taps it quite well. You'll be lucky if you ever feel the sentiment he expressed in I Just Called, if you haven't already.

4. Anyway, none of that excuses Lionel's liteweight R&Beige. Even if the other R&B acts were lite his work was the litest of all.

True indeed. I think what adds an extra layer of cheese is the technology. Had that song been played on traditional instruments and not double dipped in synths and drum machines, it might've been easier to take. It's not a bad song in and of itself. It's just saccharine 80's schlock.

...if it were done with the acoustic and synth instruments that he used in the seventies. Those eighties keyboards sounded way more glossy and cold compared to the analog synths of his classic period.

Only culture vultures or millennials would be measuring by billboard & chart metrics.

I measure by what was banging at my family reunions, blasting out the Chevys & Olds rolling down the block, playing in the background on weekend mornings, what was getting heavy rotation on my local radio stations, what songs still generate fond memories to.this.day.

So yeah....wikipedia is a nice tool for recollection and verifying time periods.....

but y'all gone and cook though...

just a a singers singer and he was on point and he could do both slow and uptempo cuts, problem is his best stuff that really caught on was with Cherelle and it was happening

however he was missing that album to tap in Luther and Freddie's world on a whole, however for a minute he was a real threat, drugs, smokes
and politics and he ended up blowing up in England.

the brother wrote Shes a bad Mamma Jamma for Carl Carlton, and he really wrote the Fast version of PYT for Michael Jackson, however Quincy Jones squeezed him for a co credit to have the song on thriller.

James Ingram was badd just for his wailing vocals like he did on the start of "Can't we fall in love again" which has Pyllis Hyman and Michael Henderson on it. folks who don't know about James Pimpin" Ingram better ask somebody

and only Earth, Wind and fire, Isley Brothers, Ohio Players,Parliament Funkadelic were seeing them on a consistant basis in the mid to late 70's.

Turkey you tripping Lionel Richie wrote strong classics which in all honesty to compliment that with a Solo Career, in Black Pop only Michael Jackson had a better career in that department, and on the real as Huge of a fan of MJ that I am, He ain't never seeing Lionel RIchie as no songwriter and most acts aren't, Richie commodores to solo was on a One Man Lennon and Mccartney tip

and if you gonna call the Commodores 2nd tier then you better throw 10-12 bands better than them especially from the 74-80 era
and also i dare you to name 15-20 songwriters who were seeing Lionel RIchie during his prime and peak

when he was composing on the Commodores, solo, for Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers,etc..

drops the Mic and walks cool out of the room

As far as new material, dude has been extremely pedestrian if not m.i.a. since the 80s.

As far as 'big time male artists' from the 80s goes, there was Prince and MJ and then everyone else. Prince and MJ were on a tier firmly above everyone else and remained the most relevant until their untimely deaths.

Not a fan of Bon Jovi, but I'd argue he's stayed relevant far longer than LR. By relevant I mean radio hits, high selling albums, media buzz, ability to generate new fans, and sell out arenas.

The Boss is most certainly bigger than LR.

Then you got other guys like Phill Collins and Sting. Again, not particularly a fan, but respect their ability to maintain relevancy and connect with fans over a long haul. Sting is incredibly lame though.

An underrated, but extremely relevant and influential artist still making waves in 2017 is Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode. Probably not a fair comparison since he's part of a band, but worthy of mention.

he was as important as anybody in the 80's period.

Wrote Hits on Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross on the Commodores solo career

he was a hitting on all cylinders.

"Endless Love" "Missing you" "Lady" Co Wrote "We are the World"

jive roast beef Head turkeys don't know about Lionel B.Richie they better had ask somebody.

Springstank ain't seeing Lionel Richie

you said Jon Bon Jovi? HA HA HA!!! he couldn't carry Lionel Richie's Jerri Curl Activator Bottle.

RIchie is a Better songwriter than Michael Jackson and Prince Combined and most of his stuff holds up better.

Now of Course Michael Jackson is the King and was the Kang of the 80's and he is the Kang of Music.

Prince was big for one decade. however in the bigger picture he ain't seeing no Lionel Richie.

its all objective however acting like Lionel Richie was playing second fiddle to anyone in terms of talent is wrong.
he could hold his own and he did period.

Lionel did it all back in the day
