I'll go with:

En Vogue
The Winans
The Temptations
Boyz II Men

Honorable mentions go to Jackson 5
and Take 6

edit for "and why"
The main group was chosen either because all of
them could lead or most of them could AND they
had at least one dynamic lead.. multiple ones in
some cases. They all also had tight harmonies
at their peaks. The latter was the case with
Take 6, but they didn't really have a strong lead...
possibly the best harmony I've ever heard live tho.
Leaving Jackson 5 out of the top 4 was hard, but
they didn't give Jermaine and Jackie enough shine,
relying too much on Michael... not their fault,
b/c they were kids, but I gotta judge based on
the music.

>En Vogue

Personally I like The Supremes better, but En Vogue were far better singers.

But think of all those dope 60's and 70's singing groups:

The Emotions
Sister Sledge
Martha and The Vandellas
Honeycone
The Marvalettes
The Three Degrees
LaBelle
First Choice
The Pointer Sisters

honorable mention to The Dells.

I based my picks off pure vocals, not overall performance ( dancing, etc). Thus no J5 and New Edition ( who are both amongst my all time favorite groups.)

problem with finding a fourth one for me. Jodeci nor Dru Hill can be added because they were great for a quick spell but not over the long haul. Boyz II Men had a ridiculous run but haven't been able to gain a foothold in the game for almost 20 years despite still making albums.

So, I'd wrap my four up with J5 even though I can take or leave them.

their core fans. It may have something to do with the changes in folks' taste(s). I dunno. They've always been a pretty awesome group to me. I'd venture to say that most people, aside from their hardcore fans, stopped checking for them after third album. It's almost like R&B artists from the 90s just faded away.

Cooleyhighharmony (1991)
II (1994)
Evolution (1997)
Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya (2000)
Full Circle (2002)
Throwback, Vol. 1 (2004)
The Remedy (2006)
Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA (2007)
Love (2009)
Twenty (2011)
Collide (2014)

I think they'd fit right on the mountain with the others listed.

Edit: I should have used stronghold instead of foothold because they've got a solid footing; just not a very strong one amongst casual fans, etc.

Seems to me they were the quintessential male vocal group of the 90's.

Collabo's with Mariah I think opened them up to a new audience. More hits both pop and rnb than any other group from that era.

As for not having fandom outside of their core fans, you could say that for any artist outside of their prime. Their prime pretty much ended after that 4th album.

Shit, nobody's checking for Dru Hill anymore that doesn't live in Bmore damn near....

Edit:
>Seems to me they were the quintessential male vocal group of the 90's.
They were the best which is why they should go up there.

>Collabo's with Mariah I think opened them up to a new audience. More hits both pop and rnb than any other group from that era.
They didn't keep enough of that audience to stay as relevant as NE or The Temps have after all these years. How many people do you hear mention them at all?

>As for not having fandom outside of their core fans, you could say that for any artist outside of their prime. Their prime pretty much ended after that 4th album.
Right! They can still sing though. You'd think they'd draw huge crowds and/or have a large following whenever they are touring. I never ever hear anything about a tour. Not even from adult/contemporary stations who have basically abandoned the group.

As we heard on "Caravan of Love", Chris Jasper isn't really a threat to take Ron's crown.
