"I post the categories, you post the song and discuss. "

The premise is simple:

I’ll post a few categories and you’ll post a song underneath that fits that category, regardless of genre, and discuss it. Some songs might fight multiple categories and duplicates are allowed in that situation.

The only rule is that you have something to say about the song. I’d like to stimulate some kind of discussion with this, not simply add to people’s playlists. I’d rather see this post drop like a stone than see it populate with a bunch of songs with no discussion so feel free to expound.

So far I have the following categories:

“In The Hour Of Chaos”. This is a go-to song when you’re going through something.

“Memories” These are song that you closely associate with particular memories.

“To The Dearly Departed”. These are songs you associate with someone who has passed on.

“The Epitome”. These are the songs that perfectly exemplify something, be it their era, genre, an emotion or idea.

“Masterpiece Theater” The best cuts from movies. Everything from great remakes for a biopic to a great soundtrack cut that adds to the experience of the movie.

“So Bad It’s Good”. Need I explain further? These must be heard to be believed and present a particular brand of awful that can only be admired.

“Hidden Gems”. Again, self-explanatory.

“Guilty Pleasure”. Delicious cheese, tasty corn, and entertaining camp goes here.

When I'm stressed out, angry or depressed, I'd rather experience and work through these emotions than ignore them, and listening to Radiohead helps me do that.

Memories of the last few weeks of High School my senior year. We dipped out from school one day, and while we were riding in the car, we were all talking about who we were taking to prom, where we were all going to college, and how this would be the last time we'd all be together for a while.

This song came on. It was perfect. I'll always remember that day ( and that time in my life ) because of this song:

The summer after high school graduation. I'd never heard of Alison Crockett before, but her performance on this album was so otherworldly and spiritual that I was totally captivated.

I think a close second would be Golden Age of Life by 4hero, for the same reason.

One afternoon my older brother took out one of my dad's vinyl records, which was a big no-no.
But he'd gotten a turntable for a gift, and we promised not to tell. He put on "Mr Magic."

It's one of the few vivid memories I have of him.

and the thing is i don't even associate it with either of my grandmothers, may they continue to rest in peace.

but my mom's grandmother name is Grandma. i listen to the song and can get a little choked up if i'm in the right mood/space thinking of her inevitable eventual passing and how this song will remind me of her. thankfully she is in excellent health, but it will happen one day. the lyrics only partially apply, but the mood and feel of that song is incredible to me.

Reminds me of my grandmother.

I have such vivid memories of seeing her in the same church pew, and on first Sundays
when we had communion she'd usually start us off with "I Know It Was The Blood."

I always liked how tasteful her church hats were -- never too big or flashy, just enough.

translation:

"Come from all over the Earth,
all races, creeds and cultures.
Exploit without pity.
Set fire to every-thing.
Respect not the land or those who live on it.
Respect neither young nor old.
Come and fuck everything up!"

This movie depicts rampant inequality, prejudice and various other social problems throughout Brazil; and yet, here's this calm, relaxing music playing in the background as if nothing's wrong. The briefcase exchanged between the two men takes this scene to a whole other level of awfulness once you learn the meaning behind it, and all of this happens in the presence of Christ the Redeemer. I like the narrator's interpretation of the statue as well.
