One that he already had in the can, which NetFlix bought, one filmed specifically for NetFlix and one to be filmed later.

SO for those folks who shitted on Dave for leaving 40 mil on the table...It appears that he will be okay.

He's doing shows on his time and his way. He's doing press on his time and his way (Only interview so far with his good friend Gayle King). And he is managing the celebrity as good as anyone has.

I'm sorry Pryor set the bar too high, had more output than cats, had more imagination, dropped jewels in a way funnier way....something. Pee O'Neal and Dave Chipotle don't compare. Maybe it is just me.

You dont care for Patrice Oneal and Dave Chappelle. Come into a Dave Chappelle post and comment twenty more times about someone you dont really care for. Makes sense

If these had come out 15 years ago the rewatchability would be insane.

Now - there are just too many comedy specials, let alone TV shows and movies, to watch. You may not rewatch much nowadays.

Probably won't be the strongest of the 3 specials he's dropping (I hope), but you gotta give it to this man. Thoughtful, funny, he didn't rely on past hits or schticks at all

He did his thing. Solid 8/10

Fucking love Chappelle, man. Bless that dude

His voice and mic control effected my enjoyment as he seemed to be whispering at times. Cool to have him back, hopefully this is only the beginning and he sharpens his swords a bit.

Edit: 15 minutes into The Texas one and it's stellar thus far. He's hitting here.

Kiese Laymon was going in on Dave on facebook.

I love Kiese Laymon but at some point I realized I could never live up to his ideal of what it means to be a progressive. Which is cool. At some point you define for yourself what it means to be progressive.

the Texas standup got a steadier stream of laughs from me. From a more technical stance, Age of Spin had jokes that were built up better. I really loved how Dave would build a joke up only to take a sharp turn for the punchline.

In the Texas set, I felt like Dave had an entirely different structure for jokes where he set up quick visual jokes with his wording. Age of Spin is slightly more quotable for me but Texas had visual jokes like the bit about Lil Wayne and pussy juice.

aggressively?

It was very fast paced editing and it almost like a lot of the jokes didn't get room to "breathe"? Like as soon as he dropped jokes and the crowd laughed their was a quick edit to the next joke rather than let the laughter linger?

Almost like long takes would have been more natural and have gone at a more leisurely pace.

IDK. Having been at one of the shows he did this material the jokes felt more intimate and casual.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I enjoyed the Texas special more than the LA one. The LA one was more polished and set, but I laughed more at the Texas one. The jacket in the first one was bothering me, and he laughed at his jokes a bit too much.

after more folk sit with it, there will be more backlash

some of those jokes are just straight up in bad taste

the craft of the jokes are brilliant, a lot of the content, especially in the LA one, were turrbl...

Dave came off mad Hotepish at times

but I def laughed at a good number of jokes in both specials.

glad he out there again.

anyone peep in the LA special: white plastic barbie and her LA fuccboi in the front row... she did not laugh at one thing. that shit was making me laugh

also "Santa Monica... Vans" hilarious

Austin had better story-telling. LA might have had better punchlines. I prefer story-telling.

And seriously, fuck those people who are offended. He's 42. Are we really gonna be so intolerant as to expect middle-aged people to keep up-to-date on what's going on in current day women's/trans study classes? Or up-to-date on the current euphemisms (which are incorrectly used....like 'racialized' and 'racism') and definitions that the far left keep changing so that they can wield moral authority over anyone who didn't attend a critical race theory class last week?

On behalf of all middle-aged people....Fuck them.

This is an interesting moment because I generally hate when people spend alot of time warring against politically correctness and act like it's the biggest problem in America, BUT AT THE SAME DAMN TIME..

I tend to feel like you just articulated.

Chappelle and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie are starting an interesting conversation.

I used to agree with you about this stuff being non-threatening. Not anymore. My SO has been trying to convince me for years. I've finally fallen over the edge. Canada is currently contemplating an amendment to our Human Rights code which would categorize Dave's performance as hate speech. It would actually be illegal.

Dave Chappelle has done more to bring awareness to race issues than 99.9% of any of these people will do so in their lifetimes. And he's done so OUTSIDE an echo-chamber. Arguably effecting REAL change albeit subversively.

The reason I am particularly aggressive about this is because I've come to learn that people like this don't genuinely wish to effect real change. They seek moral authority and nothing else. I will NEVER use the term 'racialization' (or racialized people which has become the new term as an acceptable replacement for supposed 'out-dated' terms like visible minorities and people of color) in any way other than it's traditional definition. I'm not going to be a mouthpiece for their moral authority game and the euphemism treadmill that serves as methodology to find new ways of accusing people of racism, sexism and trans/homophobia. A racialized person is someone who has been categorized into a racial group that THEY DO NOT IDENTIFY WITH. The most common example of this in my community....is an African immigrant being categorized as a 'black people' who does not self-identify as a 'black person'. If you self-identify as a 'black person'....you cannot be 'racialized' by someone else (unless they've put you in a different category/group). You have already 'racialized' yourself.

There is nothing logically incoherent in the point Dave made. I'm paraphrasing...but how do we define his responsibility in accommodating other people's self-image?

68. "Wow that's some bullshit. Thank god for the Black Power Movement"
In response to Reply # 67

I've never heard of the the "racialized movement" but it makes sense because it is the natural logical conclusion of the movement to allow people to self-identify social labels as it applies to race.

I'd like to think such a movement would have a much harder time taking roots in the states because, IMHOP, the Black Power, Black is Beautiful Movement, was so powerful in the US that we are ingrained to side eye any effort to not acknowledge and embrace ones blackness. Skin lightner creams? That's some bullshit. Tiger Woods calling himself a Cablinasian? Bullshit. Dating eclusively white? That's some bullshit. It's interesting because you can compare black americans opinions on some of these issues to black people in other parts of the world, Carribean, Europe and even Africa, and you can see we have much different stronger opinions about this stuff because of the Black Power Movement (I beleive).

That's why comparisons between the race politics and transgendered politics are so fraught with minefields because if the transgendered approach was applied to racial politics, people would be horrified with that sort of thinking. That is, if a person felt uncomfortable or dysphoria in their black body, our approach wouldn't be to try to help that person change their race. Instead we would work to get that person comfortable in the black body they have a let them know their race doesn't stop them doing anything they want to do, even stuff considered "white stuff". I don't need to turn white to want to play lacrosse. Compare that to the transgendered movement in which if a young person express the feeling they are in the "wrong body" it seems the progressive approach is to say, "Yep you sure are, let us help you change that". hard to see how that is good for self esteem. Imagine if we treated overweight people or anaroexic people like that.

And I could be all wrong on this but I think we are so early into this discussion and there is so little science or study of these topics that we are left mostly with the application of theory on how to deal with and after years and decades of study we might discover or look back on our current approaches and think they are barbaric and crude like lobotomies. Again, I could be wrong.

I don't know. Movements tend to overreach and if Chappelle's shows and similar stuff get labeled a hate crime their will be a pushback. That I am sure of.

In response to Reply # 68

I love the 'black is beautiful' movement and I'm happy that society as a whole has made an attempt to be more inclusive and representative in our culture. Kid's cartoons....movies....dolls....all that stuff was and IS necessary in my opinion. I also support employment equity in the vast amounts of union jobs that are passed down through nepotism which is a racially exclusive practice by it's own methodology.

But to flush out Dave's joke. The trans-woman that he talks about is in danger of over-dosing on drugs. But her friend's take the time to express outrage about her pronoun. WHILE she is in REAL DANGER. That's not by accident. Dave is making a distinction between real compassion and virtue-signalling.

I'm not a typical 'anti-politically correct' kinda guy. I think what we call 'PC' has done more good than bad. That's why I included my thoughts about 'black is beautiful' and employment equity in this post.

The biggest personal example is the use of the word 'faggot' during my childhood compared to my step-son's childhood. I remember being 9,10,11,12,13. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that more than 75% of my interaction with other male children centered around hetero-normative discourse. 'You're gay'. "No YOU'RE gay'. 'You're the faggot'. 'No YOU'RE the faggot'. I take my step-sons to school and can see the change. I attribute alot of that (most of that) to Critical theory. Frankfurt School. Marcuse and Horkheimer.

I'm still trying to figure out how to reject the current manifestations of that philosophy that I see as a threat to intellect while holding on to what I value and how critical theory has benefitted us.

Because the more certain type comes after him, the more I want to defend him. There have been a lot of pieces like this written.

https://www.vice.com/en_au/article/a-study-of-how-dave-chappelle-isnt-nailing-2017

And then of course you know VSB had to try and take him down.

http://verysmartbrothas.com/what-exactly-does-dave-chappelle-want-from-key-peele/

I think it's interesting that certain white people want to come after him for using the term "tranny" once or twice but have no issue with him saying Nigga a million times.

I'll admit I am open to hearing what the difference is.

The thing about it is I think a lot of people are misremember Dave Chappelle. His last two specials were good, but he never had a special on the level of Chris ROck's Bring the Pain. Also as far as the Dave Chappelle Show, it wan't all thoughtful dissections of racism in America. There was a lot of Tyrone Biggums and dumb gags for laughs.

Anyway, eager to see what DC's third special will be like. And would love to see how he reacts to the criticism of these first two specials.

so I would imagine he knew bloggers and folks in the internet would write pieces and have opposing opinions about the jokes. Bloggers have been coming for comics in general, so I would hope the think-pieces won't get him too bent out of shape.

This is someone that had to deal with folks heckling him with this Chappelle Show catch phrases, so I would hope the internet based think-pieces would just roll off his back. Now if folks show up in person and heckle him at his shows because of those think-pieces, well, that's another story altogether.

also, if you were a 13-year-old white Australian when the Chappelle show was poppin', there's clearly a degree of cultural distance at play.

Re: the VSB piece, they generally suck, BUT this description of K&P's comedy is pretty spot on...and a big part of why I find them incredibly unfunny.

So they know censored, national TV Dave... not crude, nightclub Dave.

I think he could use a language upgrade regarding how he talks about LGBT folks but he's also going to have to respect the fact he just doesn't and isn't going to have the same leeway to speak freely in that lane that he does with racism.

He can speak on racism because he's lived it. He can't say the same for what LGBT folks go through so his opinions are going to be perceived as from an outsider rather than an ally unless he really builds up a track record of participating in their causes.

I think he knows in 2017 the term "tranny" and "fag" stings to hear. I am give him the benefit of the doubt that his use was purposeful.

I found the Bill Cosby stuff interesting because, well, know one has figured out how to deal with the dilemma that he discussed.

I have only seen the first special so far. And I really liked it but felt like there were moments when I wasn't really feeling the vibe. And I kept thinking, initially, "oh he's older, maybe lost a step..." but then I remembered a few "meh" jokes/moments from his earlier specials and just thought, he's never been perfect. So I'm with you on this.

of Dave being a little out of touch.
He predicated that whole shit on "this song by 50 Cent" which is actually by YG.
50 hasn't been hot in years, but for some reason you tie a YG song and a whole bit to 50 Cent?

Wisdom is what separates the good from the great.

I look to comedy to find the shared wink and nod towards the insanity that happens in daily living without that acknowledgement then comedy is just fart jokes.

yeah, Patrice wasn't really coming with the wisdom IMO.

Burr is mostly loud cursing and yelling but I fux with him hard

CK sucks.

I definitely wonder if Patrice would still be funny if he was doing the same type of humor or would it be crass and low brow?

my point.. I think comedians are funny as shit during their peak years but 10 years later you look back and go "ugh, the words make me cringe now"

well, not me but I think OKP's tend to do that with comedians.

which I'll admit were sky high. I've avoided everything written about it other than a few friends I trust hyping it up.

had no beef with content. i hardly ever trip on that sort of thing. i only care if it's funny. though there were moments I'm thinking... here come the think pieces.

It had some high points for sure. I liked Austin a little bit more than LA, but I did feel like there was something missing overall. especially for him.

I'll probably give them one more shot. some comedy specials don't grab me until the second time, but this is the second let down in a month. Burr just had his weakest special ever imo. Louis CK drops on Netflix this month i think. hopefully that won't make it three.

And agreed on that recent Burr special. I go back and forth on Bill. He's funny but I dislike his politics and he's very reactionary/anti-intellectual. Chappelle and Louis are alot more intelligent imo....What's impressed me is that I found his older specials to be hilarious despite loathing his politics but this recent one just seemed like a huge drop-off.

I know on his podcast he'll go on conspiracy rants, and his Hillary/Trump equivalencies did bug me during election season... especially since I know so many people personally who bought into (or still do) the the narrative that she's just as bad as Trump. but he seems to always follow this stuff up with acknowledging that he doesn't really know shit about shit.
That said, he's dropped so many gems over the years. Just not so much in this last special. but yeah, I'd agree Louie's a more interesting thinker. Dave too, even though i thought these two joints fell kinda short on that front.

in the 10 to 15 years since Dave first drop OKP dudes have become more bitch made and feminine. Due to this transition Dave is now shallow and hollow since his comedy hasn't evolved like they have.

10 years ago these OKP critics were calling women bitches and hoes on here but now they scoff at a word or a joke that involves a woman.

Funny is funny to me. I listen to Patrice/O&Aclips damn near weekly. it's a boatload of misogynist, racist shit, and still hilarious. I don't have to agree or feel comfortable with something to laugh at it. Past few months I saw David Cross, and Patton Oswalt's specials. I thought they both sucked even though I agreed with everything they had to say.

And yeah, some people we're probably uncomfortable with the material, and as you said they've changed, their sensibilities have changed.

But some people just simply didn't find these 2 specials that funny or smart. And they know Dave is both so they feel let down.

And for some people it's probably both.

Dude is just at the top of his game.

He spent a lot of the time talking about the reaction to his first two specials with regards to Trans issues. Extremely eloquent at times, very uncomfortable at other times, but always funny.

He wasn't defensive but he explained where he was coming from and it made alot of sense. Dude was super sincere sounding when he spoke about it was never his intent to hurt trans people. He admitted one miscalculation he made was that coming from Hollywood where there are so many powerful gay people, he thought making funny of gay people was risk taking as oppose to punching down.

His specials concerned me not because I found them offensive per se but because at times his humor seemed dated, a little lazy and unimformed about the current conversations people were having around certain issues like trans issues and Trump. This standup was probably just as offensive to many at times but it was informed and he could explain where he was coming from very well and also made very clear politically where he stood on a lot of issues. His takedowns of Trump were so precise and truth-telling. Dude covers three NYT editorials in a 3 line joke.

Anyway, I am not going to spoil any of his jokes because I am sure they will end up in his next special.

But dude is really cementing his place at the Comedy Gawd right now.

Also Kendrick Lamar was his special unannounced guest which was dope.

that this was gonna be the next special. Pretty dope either way.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

He definitely killed and I saw at least one Chinese woman walk. She just couldn't take it. Donnell killed as well, but honestly he's killed both times I've seen him. A fair amount of the white folk in the audience definitely missed some of the jokes. It was interesting having them be the definite majority in the room but having a lot of the content directed towards black folks.

And when Kendrick came on folks went crazy at first and then the older cats quickly made their exit. Kendrick was good but it seemed like his energy was pretty reserved. I've seen him quite a few times and it seems like he's actually regressed as a performer.

Show on a Tuesday night?

I stuck around for a few Kendrick songs but at some point I wanted to get out and relieve the babysitter.

It might have been different for a different performer. Never seen Kendrick perform but the show didn't do much for me. I love Kendrick but I don't know his lyrics like that to sing along and some of the stuff he covered isn't really bop ready.

But then I never was a huge hip-hop live performance unless I really really love the group and know there lyrics or they do something interesting performance-wise.

You trippin tho.. but I will admit the last few times Kendrick has been kinda lazy or just tired.

We haven't used a legit real baby sitter yet so I can't really talk.

I left right after "Be Humble"... primarily to avoid the bedlam of the phone lines and uber/cab fight, but also b/c though I love him, I don't know his stuff like that, and while the energy of the show picked up, it was definitely a bit reserved.

I thought Dave was great. Thoughtful, introspective, insightful.

I hate hate hate to be THAT girl, but I laughed a bit at Donnell but found it more offensive than not, and the dated trope of "white people do this/black people do that" was super lame to me. I'm good on that.

I thought Neal Brennan was hilarious.

Kendrick was a DOPE surprise and agree with 13Rose both about his energy *and* the scores of old white folk leaving when his set started.

I'm also going to see Childish on Saturday so am very, very interested in seeing how/if the demographics shift for that show...

squinty eye jokes (or was that the first guy?). I know there was something Donnell did I couldn't ride with. Was it the Slurpee Nigga jokes maybe? All I know was that there was an Indian with a group of white co-workers in front of me laughing the hardest but in the way people do at ROAST to show that they weren't upset at the jokes.

It was so funny watching this couple on a date in front of me because the woman was not feeling a lot of Chappelle's jokes at first while the dude was dying. As DC got into it and explained where he was coming from I think he won her over by the end.

Neil Brennan was good too.

Actually seeing those three perform together you can see the skills that combined to make the Chappelle Show great.
